Book excerpt: The objective of this report is to contribute to the independent assessment of the Space Shuttle External Tank Foam Material. This report specifically addresses material modeling, characterization testing, data reduction methods, and data pedigree. A brief description of the External Tank foam materials, locations, and standard failure modes is provided to develop suitable background information. A review of mechanics based analysis methods from the open literature is used to provide an assessment of the state-of-the-art in material modeling of closed cell foams. Further, this report assesses the existing material property database and investigates sources of material property variability. The report presents identified deficiencies in testing methods and procedures, recommendations for additional testing as required, identification of near-term improvements that should be pursued, and long-term capabilities or enhancements that should be developed.Gates, Thomas S. and Johnson, Theodore F. and Whitley, Karen S.Langley Research CenterEXTERNAL TANKS; FAILURE MODES; TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT; THERMAL PROTECTION; VARIABILITY; EVALUATION; DATA REDUCTION; DATA BASES; AUGMENTATION...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technology review and assessment of modeling and analysis efforts underway in support of a safe return to flight of the thermal protection system (TPS) for the Space Shuttle external tank (ET) are summarized. This review and assessment effort focuses on the structural modeling and analysis practices employed for ET TPS foam design and analysis and on identifying analysis capabilities needed in the short-term and long-term. The current understanding of the relationship between complex flight environments and ET TPS foam failure modes are reviewed as they relate to modeling and analysis. A literature review on modeling and analysis of TPS foam material systems is also presented. Finally, a review of modeling and analysis tools employed in the Space Shuttle Program is presented for the ET TPS acreage and close-out foam regions. This review includes existing simplified engineering analysis tools are well as finite element analysis procedures. Knight, Norman F., Jr. and Nemeth, Michael P. and Hilburger, Mark W. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of foam insulation on the External Tank (ET) was necessitated by the potentially hazardous build up of ice on the vehicle prior to and during launch. This use of foam was initiated on the Saturn V rocket, which, like the Space Shuttle, used cryogenic fuel. Two major types of foam have been used on the ET. The first type is NCFI 24-124, an acreage material that is automatically sprayed on in a controlled environment. It replaced CPR 488 in 1998 and has been used since that time. The other major foams, BX-250 or BX-265, are handsprayed foams that are used to close out regions where the various sections of the ET are attached. The objectives of the present report are to study the chemistries of the various foam materials and to determine how physical and mechanical anomalies might occur during the spray and curing process. To accomplish these objectives, the report is organized as follows. First, the chemistries of the raw materials will be discussed. This will be followed by a discussion of how chemistry relates to void formation. Finally, a TGA-MS will be used to help understand the various foams and how they degrade with the evolution of chemical by-products. Weiser, Erik S. and SaintClair, Terry L. and Nemeth, Michael P. Book excerpt: The key to opening the use of space to private enterprise and to broader public uses lies in reducing the cost of the transportation to space. More routine, affordable access to space will entail aircraft-like quick turnaround and reliable operations. Currently, the space Shuttle is the only reusable launch vehicle, and even parts of it are expendable while other parts require frequent and extensive refurbishment. NASA's highest priority new activity, the Reusable Launch Vehicle program, is directed toward developing technologies to enable a new generation of space launchers, perhaps but not necessarily with single stage to orbit capability. This book assesses whether the technology development, test and analysis programs in propulsion and materials-related technologies are properly constituted to provide the information required to support a December 1996 decision to build the X-33, a technology demonstrator vehicle; and suggest, as appropriate, necessary changes in these programs to ensure that they will support vehicle feasibility goals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books have been written about the finite element method; little however has been written about procedures that assist a practicing engineer in undertaking an analysis in such a way that errors and uncertainties can be controlled. In A Practical Guide to Reliable Finite Element Modelling, Morris addresses this important area. His book begins by introducing the reader to finite element analysis (FEA), covering the fundamental principles of the method, whilst also outlining the potential problems involved. He then establishes consistent methods for carrying out analyses and obtaining accurate and reliable results, concluding with a new method for undertaking error control led analyses which is illustrated by means of two case studies. The book addresses a number of topics that: • Systematically cover an introduction to FEA, how computers build linear-static and linear-dynamic finite element models, the identification of error sources, error control methods and error-controlled analyses. • Enable the reader to support the design of complex structures with reliable, repeatable analyses using the finite element method. • Provide a basis for establishing good practice that could underpin a legal defence in the event of a claim for negligence. A Practical Guide to Reliable Finite Element Modelling will appeal to practising engineers engaged in conducting regular finite element analyses, particularly those new to the field. It will also be a resource for postgraduate students and researchers addressing problems associated with errors in the finite element method. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is designed as an accessible and readable introduction to a rapidly expanding area that is in demand worldwide. A variety of professionals from different backgrounds are being tasked with managing health and safety risks in a wide variety of settings. Many lack current and up-to-date knowledge of the key developments that have taken place in Safety Science in recent decades, as well as a sense of how these developments fit in with previous approaches. This book takes readers on a ‘journey’ across three broad developments in safety science. It covers topics that focus on the individual including human error, risk and the role of cognition in human performance. It then shifts to research in safety science that uses organizations as the basic unit of analysis, questions about organizational decision making and the characteristics that dispose towards or against organizational failure and it introduces perspectives based on systems science that address issues that arise out of complexity and interdependence. Those who will purchase this book are students taking courses in human factors, ergonomics, applied psychology, occupational health and safety management. Professionals working in safety management in any field from agriculture, construction, shipping, aviation, power generation, oil exploration, manufacturing to healthcare will find this book useful, as well as general readers interested in why systems fail.
