Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to state department of transportation bridge design and structural engineers, bridge consultants, and others involved in applied and research methods for increasing the live load capacity of existing highway bridges. The synthesis describes the current state of the practice for the various methods used to increase the live load capacity of existing highway bridges. This is done predominantly for bridges in the short- to medium-span range. Information on the more common bridge material types is presented. There is an emphasis on superstructure rather than substructure strengthening.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All states are required to load rate and post bridges in order to comply with federal standards. Load ratings are performed in order to determine the safe live load capacity of a bridge, considering the existing conditions of the bridge. Based on the load ratings, the bridge is evaluated for load posting or strengthening. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) was notified that their practice for load rating and posting did not satisfy 23 CFR 650.313. The purpose of this study was to summarize and compare load rating and posting procedures used in other states and to provide recommendations and information necessary to modify the load rating and posting procedures in INDOT's Bridge Inspection Manual (Part 3: Load Rating) in order to satisfy 23 CFR 650.313.In order to understand how load rating and posting is performed in other states, department of transportation (DOT) manuals were examined, questionnaires were sent to states, and additional states of interest were surveyed. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) The Manual for Bridge Evaluation, Second Edition, which is the current specification for load rating and posting bridges was reviewed, as well as older AASHTO bridge evaluation manuals. Based on this information, revisions were proposed to the INDOT Bridge Inspection Manual (Part 3: Load Rating) in order to eliminate current deficiencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Condition assessment and safety verification of existing bridges and decisions as to whether bridge posting is required are addressed through analysis, load testing, or a combination of methods. Bridge rating through structural analysis is by far the most common procedure for rating existing bridges. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Manual for Bridge Evaluation (MBE), First Edition permits bridge capacity ratings to be determined through allowable stress rating (ASR), load factor rating (LFR) or load and resistance factor rating (LRFR); the latter method is keyed to the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, which is reliability-based and has been required for the design of new bridges built with federal findings since October, 2007. A survey of current bridge rating practices in the United States has revealed that these three methods may lead to different ratings and posting limits for the same bridge, a situation that carries serious implications with regard to the safety of the public and the economic well-being of communities that may be affected by bridge postings or closures. To address this issue, a research program has been conducted with the overall objective of providing recommendations for improving the process by which the condition of existing bridge structures is assessed. This research required a coordinated program of load testing and finite element analysis of selected bridges in the State of Georgia to gain perspectives on the behavior of older bridges under various load conditions. Structural system reliability assessments of these bridges were conducted and bridge fragilities were developed for purposes of comparison with component reliability benchmarks for new bridges. A reliability-based bridge rating framework was developed, along with a series of recommended improvements to the current bridge rating methods, which facilitate the incorporation of various in situ conditions of existing bridges into the bridge rating process at both component and system levels. This framework permits bridge ratings to be conducted at three levels of increasing complexity to achieve the performance objectives, expressed in the terms of reliability, that are embedded in the LRFR option of the AASHTO Manual of Bridge Evaluation. This research was sponsored by the Georgia Department of Transportation, and has led to a set of Recommended Guidelines for Condition Assessment and Evaluation of Existing Bridges in Georgia.

Book excerpt: A succinct, real-world approach to complete bridge system design and evaluation Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and Load and Resistance Factor Rating (LRFR) are design and evaluation methods that have replaced or offered alternatives to other traditional methods as the new standards for designing and load-rating U.S. highway bridges. Bridge Design and Evaluation covers complete bridge systems (substructure and superstructure) in one succinct, manageable package. It presents real-world bridge examples demonstrating both their design and evaluation using LRFD and LRFR. Designed for a 3- to 4-credit undergraduate or graduate-level course, it presents the fundamentals of the topic without expanding needlessly into advanced or specialized topics. Important features include: Exclusive focus on LRFD and LRFR Hundreds of photographs and figures of real bridges to connect the theoretical with the practical Design and evaluation examples from real bridges including actual bridge plans and drawings and design methodologies Numerous exercise problems Specific design for a 3- to 4-credit course at the undergraduate or graduate level The only bridge engineering textbook to cover the important topics of bridge evaluation and rating Bridge Design and Evaluation is the most up-to-date and inclusive introduction available for students in civil engineering specializing in structural and transportation engineering.

Book excerpt: There are about five hundred steel-truss highway bridges in Ohio, as well as many thousands in the nation, which are more than seventy-five years old. Preservation of aged historic steel-truss bridges first requires a consideration of public safety issues. Bridges with certain structural attributes and materials are well established as having non desirable failure modes, which make them public safety hazards. These should be removed from service with the highest possible priority. If non-technical issues such as historic significance and functional adequacy are favorable, the question then becomes whether a given bridge can be preserved within the available financial and technical resources of the responsible government agency.
