Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brominated flame retardants are one of the last classes of halogenated compounds that are still being produced worldwide and used in large quantities in many applications. They are used in plastics, textiles, electronic circuitry, and other materials to prevent fires. This volume covers the state-of-the-art of the analysis, fate and behaviour of brominated flame retardants. Experts in the field provide an overview of the compounds’ physico-chemical properties and uses, their occurrence in the environment and biota, advanced chemical analytical methods, degradation studies, toxicological effects and human exposure. This book is a valuable and comprehensive source of information for environmental scientists interested in brominated flame retardant issues, and for authorities and producers.

This book was released on 2019-08-19 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, flame retardants began to be added to synthetic materials to meet strict flammability standards. Over the years, diverse flame retardants have been manufactured and used in various products. Some flame retardants have migrated out of the products, and this has led to widespread human exposure and environmental contamination. There also is mounting evidence that many flame retardants are associated with adverse human health effects. As a result, some flame retardants have been banned, restricted, or voluntarily phased out of production and use. This publication develops a scientifically based scoping plan to assess additive, nonpolymeric organohalogen flame retardants as a class for potential chronic health hazards under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act, including cancer, birth defects, and gene mutations.

Book excerpt: Flame retardants are a group of compounds used in a variety of consumer goods to inhibit or retard the spread of flames. Several classes of chemical compounds have such capabilities, however, the persistence of these compounds in the environment and their toxicity are crucial points for a risk assessment. Classes such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have already been banned in some parts of the world while they are still permitted and extensively used in other parts of the globe. In the need for substitutes for the toxic compounds used, new structures have been synthesized and suggested by the industry as an alternative and substitutives flame retardants. The objective of this review is to address the classes of compounds used as flame retardants in terms of their toxicity to human or non-human organisms and their persistence in the environment.

Book excerpt: Marine Bivalve Mollusks and Emerging Pollutants: Toxicological Impacts provides the most updated and comprehensive knowledge of the toxicological impacts of a variety of emerging pollutants on marine bivalve mollusk species. In addition to synthesizing recent toxicological findings, the book also discusses toxification mechanisms, current challenges, and future research prospects. Written by international experts, this book assesses new advances in the toxicological impacts of pollutants, including microplastics, bromide flame retardants, nanomaterials, pharmaceutical residues, personal care products, pesticides, and perfluorinated compounds. In addition, it details how these can affect reproduction, embryonic development, metabolism, and immune systems of marine bivalves. Behavioral responses and neuroendocrine regulation is also discussed. Toxification mechanisms are interpreted at both physiological and molecular levels. The book concludes with current research and environmental challenges and potentials for further, future study techniques. Includes the latest findings of pollutant toxicological impacts Interprets recent understandings of underpinning toxification mechanisms Identifies limitations and challenges in current studies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the tightening of fire regulations, flame retardants have been added to all petroleum-based industrial and consumer goods. As a result, such chemicals have been found ubiquitous in the environment and humans. In recent years, the phase-out of some "legacy" flame retardants has prompted syntheses and large-scale production of a variety of new flame retardants, causing a new wave of environmental monitoring and research on these "emerging" chemicals. This book describes the advances in this field. The authors have compiled the mass spectra of all 209 congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and around 100 other halogenated and phosphate flame retardant chemicals.
