Book excerpt: Complex flow patterns in upper Cook Inlet in the vicinity of the Port of Anchorage re simulated using a flow table. Initially, two idealized models of the inlet were constructed with terraced layers representing the bathymetry. Encouraging test results prompted construction of a model with three-dimensional bathymetry. Both ebb and flood maximum tide flows could be examined by reversing the models on the flow table. The intriguing flow patterns of Cook Inlet were visualized using floating particles and by dye injection. Strong horizontal and vertical mixing was evident through the model particularly in the lee of headlands. The flow table models indicated that deposition of fine sediment at the Port of Anchorage may be caused in part, by ebb flow separation at the upstream Cairn Point that creates a low-flow region at the port. Experimentation with the models also provided insight into potential improvements to dredge material disposal practices.

Book excerpt: The primary objective of this investigation was to compile baseline information pertaining to the ocean circulation, especially the extent and patterns of tidal currents and tidal flushing, in Cook Inlet, Alaska, utilizing aircraft and satellite imagery with corroborative ground truth data. LANDSAT-1 and NOAA-2 and -3 imagery provided repetitive, synoptic views of surface currents, water mass migration and sediment distribution during different seasons and tides. Color, color infrared and thermal infrared imagery acquired on 22 July 1972 with the NASA NP-3A aircraft were used to analyze currents, mixing patterns and sediment dispersion in selected areas. Temperature(C), salinity (0/00) and suspended sediment concentration (mg/l) data and hand-held photography were utilized as ground truth information in the interpretation of the aircraft and satellite imagery. Coriolis effect, semidiurnal tides and the Alaska current govern the estuary circulation. Clear, oceanic water enters the inlet on the southeast during flood tide, progresses northward along the east shore with minor lateral mixing, and remains a distinct water mass to the latitude of Kasilof-Ninilchik. South of the forelands, mixing with turbid inlet water becomes extensive. Turbid water moves south primarily along the north shore during ebb tide and a shear zone between the two water masses forms in mid-inlet south of Kalgin Island. Currents adjacent to and north of the forelands are complicated by tidal action, coastal configuration and bottom effects. Turbulence is greatest throughout the water column along the south shore and stratification is more pronounced in Kamishak and Kachemak Bays, especially when fresh water runoff is high.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this report is to document the restoration of the National Ocean Service (NOS) historical circulation survey data in Cook Inlet (1973-1975), Prince William Sound (1976-1978), Icy Bay (1979), and Southeast Alaska (1984). Previous computer programs developed for Delaware River and Bay circulation survey data (2006) were used to analyze conductivity-temperature and current (CT/Current) data (Richardson and Schmalz, 2006). There were no CTD profile data available. Based on plots of salinity, temperature, current speed and direction at CT/Current moorings, temperature, salinity and current speed and direction data quality were assessed and indicated in the dataset tables. Meteorological data (sea level atmospheric pressure, air temperature, and wind speed and wind direction) were either not collected or not considered due to data issues. This report is meant to serve as a supplement to the Cook Inlet circulation survey report and to serve as the circulation survey report for Prince William Sound, Icy Bay, and Southeast Alaska"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: The Transportation Research Board (TRB) and the Division on Earth and Life Studies (DELS) have released the pre-publication version of TRB Special Report 290, The Potential Impacts of Climate Change on U.S. Transportation, which explores the consequences of climate change for U.S. transportation infrastructure and operations. The report provides an overview of the scientific consensus on the current and future climate changes of particular relevance to U.S. transportation, including the limits of present scientific understanding as to their precise timing, magnitude, and geographic location; identifies potential impacts on U.S. transportation and adaptation options; and offers recommendations for both research and actions that can be taken to prepare for climate change. The book also summarizes previous work on strategies for reducing transportation-related emissions of carbon dioxide--the primary greenhouse gas--that contribute to climate change. Five commissioned papers used by the committee to help develop the report, a summary of the report, and a National Academies press release associated with the report are available online. DELS, like TRB, is a division of the National Academies, which include the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 59. As part of the Nineteenth General Assembly of The International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics Symposium (IUGG) in Vancouver, Canada, Union Symposium U4, "Variations in Earth Rotation" was held August 18-19 1987. The Convenor was Dennis D. McCarthy, U.S. Naval Observatory with P. Paquet, Observatoire Royal de Belgique and M. G. Rochester, St. Johns University serving as co-convernors. In a session on internal structure of the Earth papers dealt with the geophysical effects on Earth rotation parameters. Mantle anelasticity increases the free core nutation (FCN) period by a few days. The period of the FCN and the amplitudes of the main nutation components are sensitive to the ellipticity of the core?]mantle boundary (CMB), and a non-hydrostatic increase of 400m in the flattening of the CMB is a possible explanation of the discrepancies from theory. An alternative suggestion rests on the subseismic description of the nutation spectrum of the stratified liquid core. Evidently new models will have to take into account contributions from the oceans, mantle anelasticity, non-hydrostatic pre-stress, CMB topography and internal core structure.
