Book excerpt: Pilots from three NATO countries participated in simulated air combat scenarios in which they either flew a conventional cockpit, consisting of F-16/F-15 type cockpit displays, or a virtually-augmented cockpit, consisting of advanced head down/head up displays, helmet mounted displays/trackers, 3 dimensional auditory displays, and haptic displays. Pilots flew simulated air intercept missions against a four-ship ground attack group supported by two air to air adversary fighters. The pilot flying the principal cockpit was instructed to try to shoot down the ground-attack group and return to a pre-defined safe air space without being shot down by adversary aircraft. The degree to which pilot performance was differentially affected by the conventional versus virtually-augmented cockpit manipulation was assessed using objective and subjective measures including pilot-aircraft lethality/survivability, pilot workload, and pilot situation awareness. Results indicated a significant advantage for the virtually-augmented interface condition in the number of missions won, exchange ratio, mission length, and number of ground strikes. In addition, the performance improvements yielded by the virtually-augmented crew station were realized with enhanced situation awareness and a reduction in workload compared to the conventional crew station. Furthermore, post flight debrief questionnaires produced highly favorable subjective reports from pilots.

Book excerpt: From 2001-2011, the General Aviation (GA) fatal accident rate remained unchanged (Duquette & Dorr, 2014) with an overall stagnant accident rate between 2004 and 2013. The leading cause, loss of control in flight (NTSB, 2015b & 2015c) due to pilot inability to recognize approach to stall/spin conditions (NTSB, 2015b & 2016b). In 2013, there were 1,224 GA accidents in the U.S., accounting for 94% of all U.S. aviation accidents and 90% of all U.S. aviation fatalities that year (NTSB, 2015c). Aviation entails multiple challenges for pilots related to task management, procedural errors, perceptual distortions, and cognitive discrepancies. While machine errors in airplanes have continued to decrease over the years, human error still has not (NTSB, 2013).A preliminary analysis of a PC-based, Garmin G1000 flight deck was conducted with 3 professional pilots. Analyses revealed increased task load, opportunities for distraction, confusing perceptual ques, and hindered cognitive performance. Complex usage problems were deeply ingrained in the functionality of the system, forcing pilots to use fallible work arounds, add unnecessary steps, and memorize knob turns or button pushes.Modern computing now has the potential to free GA cockpit designs from knobs, soft keys, or limited display options. Dynamic digital displays might include changes in instrumentation or menu structuring depending on the phase of flight. Airspeed indicators could increase in size to become more salient during landing, simultaneously highlighting pitch angle on Attitude Indicators and automatically decluttering unnecessary information for landing. Likewise, Angle-of-Attack indicators demonstrate a great safety and performance advantage for pilots (Duquette & Dorr, 2014; NTSB, 2015b & 2016b), an instrument typically found in military platforms and now the Icon A5, light-sport aircraft (Icon, 2016).How does the design of pilots environment the cockpit further influence their efficiency and effectiveness? To explore the possibilities for small aircraft displays, a participatory design investigation was conducted with 9 qualified instrument pilots. Aviators designed mock cockpits on a PC using pictorial cutouts of analog (e.g., mechanical dials) and digital (e.g., dynamic displays) controls. Data was analyzed qualitatively and compared to similar work. Finally, a template for GA displays was developed based on pilot input.

Book excerpt: The unique performance characteristics of the advanced STOL and V/STOL aircraft require a review and analysis of the cockpit, display, and control design requirements. The report presents an analysis resulting in requirements based upon detailed descriptions of a new STOL and V/STOL tactical transport operating in a severe tactical environment. Each item established as a cockpit requirement is the result of a traceable line of development that starts with the new airplane operating requirements and proceeds in directions determined by the capabilities of both hardware and humans. The end product of this analysis is a definition of cockpit display and control requirements based on the new operational needs rather than following the general tendency to use conventional cockpit displays and controls in new aircraft.

This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human error has been implicated in a 70% in civil aviation accidents. It appears that interventions aimed at reducing the occurrence of consequences of human error has not been as effective as those directed at mechanical failures. Clearly, if accidents are to be reduced further, more emphasis must be placed on the genesis of human error as it relates to accident causation. The aim of this thesis is to study and compare aircraft glass cockpit displays in human interaction performance. The study is focused in Airbus and Boeing designs, the two main companies in large range commercial flights. The first step has been to determine glass cockpit displays differences and most common failures during a flight, therefore the focus of the study is in aircraft engine display. Straightaway, a deeply examination of the different characteristics and performances has been useful to identify the parameters that can influence a better reaction of the crew in an aircraft engine failure situation. Those parameters are the direction of the scale in the meter, the existence of a reminder of the critical number, a blinking warning meter and an external warning button. Consequently, in order to recreate the display performance during an engine failure in an experiment, ten different models have been simulated using both Photoshop and Flash C6 software. Eight of the models are isolated parameter designs, the other two are a recreation of Airbus and Boeing designs. Since the experiment seeks to study human interaction, eye tracker Tobii T60 has been able to provide the instantaneous gaze point through the display and its length in time. Thus, 10 volunteers had been enrolled in the experiment, obtaining 500 results in order to do an exhaustive statistical analysis. The results were clear, Airbus design had better accuracy results and lower timing performance than Boeing. Moreover, the results from the isolated parameter models pointed the same direction. Those parameters extracted from Airbus design (blinking warning meter and left-to-right scaled meter) had a better performance as well. Even though, the external warning button extracted from Boeing design, had a lower timing performance in reaction to the alert, it appeared to be irrelevant to the complete task (reaction plus reading). According to the results, it is a fact that there is a different performance depending on the engine display design, and Airbus stands to gain. Furthermore, the study discloses that more improvements can be done in commercial aircraft glass cockpits to improve aviation safety.

Book excerpt: We examined the cockpit display representation of traffic, to support the pilot in tactical planning and conflict avoidance. Such displays may support the "free flight" concept, but can also support greater situation awareness in a non-free flight environment. Two perspective views and a coplanar display were contrasted in scenarios in which pilots needed to navigate around conflicting traffic, either in the absence (low workload) or presence (high workload) of a second intruder aircraft. All three formats were configured with predictive aiding vectors that explicitly represented the predicted point of closest pass, and predicted penetration of an alert zone around ownship. Ten pilots were assigned to each of the display conditions, and each flew a series of 60 conflict maneuvers that varied in their workload and the complexity of the conflict geometry. Results indicated a tendency to choose vertical over lateral maneuvers, a tendency which was amplified with the coplanar display. Vertical maneuvers by the intruder produced an added source of workload. Importantly, the coplanar display supported performance in all measures that was equal to or greater than either of the perspective displays (i.e., fewer predicted and actual conflicts, less extreme maneuvers). Previous studies that have indicated perspective superiority have only contrasted these with UNIplanar displays rather than the coplanar display used here. Book excerpt: Validation of a model-based methodology for the design and evaluation of advanced cockpit information-display systems is undertaken. The technique is applied to determine information and display requirements in an A-10 terrain-following flying task. Four candidate display systems, including a flight director system, are proposed and rank-ordered across dimensions of workload and performance. Validation of the analytical predictions is accomplished through man-in-the-loop simulation experiments. It is concluded that the methodology, which can determine the limit information to the best quantities needed by the pilot to perform effectively, can be a valuable tool in the development of advanced cockpit information systems.
