Book excerpt: Reinforced and pre-stressed concrete are widely used for the construction of infrastructures such as bridges, industrial structures, buildings, etc. Most of the time, the quality of the concrete mix is assumed to be guaranteed but due to the congestion of reinforcement and the quality control exercised during placing and vibrating, honeycombs and voids are likely to be present in the hardened concrete. The presence of voids leads to the early deterioration of concrete and corrosion also sets in. The corrosion of reinforcement causes damage to the cover concrete and also section loss in the area of steel. In the case of pre-stressed concrete members, the corrosion leads to a catastrophic failure without any warning. Hence, it becomes necessary to evaluate the condition of concrete using Non Destructive Techniques (NDT) and Partially Destructive Techniques (PDT). The Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) method which is widely adopted till now gives the relative quality and integrity of concrete and is based on the transit time. The rebound hammer gives the quality of concrete in the cover zone based on the rebound number.

Book excerpt: Handbook of Materials Failure Analysis: With Case Studies from the Construction Industry provides a thorough understanding of the reasons materials fail in certain situations, covering important scenarios including material defects, mechanical failure due to various causes, and improper material selection and/or corrosive environment. The book begins with a general overview of materials failure analysis and its importance, and then logically proceeds from a discussion of the failure analysis process, types of failure analysis, and specific tools and techniques, to chapters on analysis of materials failure from various causes. Failure can occur for several reasons, including: materials defects-related failure, materials design-related failure, or corrosion-related failures. The suitability of the materials to work in a definite environment is an important issue. The results of these failures can be catastrophic in the worst case scenarios, causing loss of life. This important reference covers the most common types of materials failure, and provides possible solutions. Provides the most up-to-date and balanced coverage of failure analysis, combining foundational knowledge and current research on the latest developments and innovations in the field Offers an ideal accompaniment for those interested in materials forensic investigation, failure of materials, static failure analysis, dynamic failure analysis, and fatigue life prediction Presents compelling new case studies from key industries to demonstrate concepts and to assist users in avoiding costly errors that could result in catastrophic events

This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In France, a great number of historical patrimony, consists of stone masonry building, the conservation of this patrimony is a cultural and economic issue. However, the destructive tests are limited in some types of buildings, particularly at a strong architectural heritage value. The need expressed by client and the diagnostic company concerns the lack of a reliable methodology for structural assessment at material and structural scale. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an approach which can combine the CND with the mechanical calculation. This thesis tries to answer three questions: (i) how to improve the reliability of material characterization by non-destructive tests at the structures; (ii) how to improve defect detection, localization and evaluation in material; (iii) how to improve the modeling of mechanical behavior based on CND auscultation. The first objective of this thesis is to improve the reliability of assessment of material characteristics in stone masonry structure by non-destructive techniques (mechanical properties of stones and joints). The proposed methodology will take into account the uncertainties related to: (i) the measurement procedure by CND device; (ii) the material variability constituting the masonry (stones and mortar joints); (iii) the water content which represents a significant bias in the measurement of CND. The main objective of this step is to establish, based on the constitutive material of structure, possible relations between the measurable magnitude by CND and the physical and mechanical properties. The combination of these data will enable to implement an inverse tool, using the CND measurements to deduce the properties of constitutive material of structure. Some methods, as ultrasound, electricity and electromagnetics, which require further understanding, are envisaged to be used in this stage. The second part of this thesis aims to assess the potential of the CND acoustic and electromagnetic methods for the detection of defects, particularly at the level of mortar joints. An active and passive CND instrumentation will be implemented during the characterization test of mortar joints and a validation test will be also proposed at structural scale (masonry wall). In order to realize this objective, an experimental campaign of characterization and validation which will be carried out within the CIFRE thesis of Vincent VENZAL, in collaboration with AIA Ingénierie (thesis started in September 2016). These masonry walls (stones of Frontenac assembled by the lime mortar joints), constructed at demi scale, will be subjected to a vertical loading and tested in shear until the ruin. Once the nondestructive method of mechanical characterization of limestones is validated, a mapping of mechanical properties in structure cans be obtained by non-destructives measurements. This enable to identify the variability of mechanical characterization for the different studied zones and also within these zones. Firstly, this variability could probably be used to identify the partial safety coefficient of masonry in situ by verification in Eurocode 6. Secondly, a study of sensibility of variability of these mechanical properties would be realized by finite element method (damage law). These numerical mechanical tests with random draw of mechanical characteristic in relation with the variability obtained in site lead to (i) identify the real homogenized stress of elements in masonry at the structural scale and (ii) study the scale effect on the highly heterogonous structure.

Successive symposia were held throughout Europe until 1997. This, the 5th symposium is organized as SEIKEN SYMPOSIUM No. 26, and is sponsored by the Institute of Industrial Science, at the University of Tokyo, Japan. Original objectives of the NDT-CE symposium have been to provide an opportunity for discussing current issues and future perspectives of NDT and for promoting mutual understanding among engineers and researchers. Asia is one of the key regions for further development in NDT and this symposium in Japan will be a good opportunity not only to exchange technical information on NDT, but to promote worldwide friendship between engineers in Asian countries and other nations of the world. This volume contains 70 papers providing the most recent research results and findings. The papers are grouped under the following areas: (1) keynote papers, (2) magnetic / electric, (3) steel structures, (4) integrated test, (5) moisture, (6) strength, (7) acoustic emission, (8) various tests, (9) ultrasonic, (10) impact echo, (11) radar, (12) quality and (13) corrosion / cover.
