This book was released on 2008-10-30 with total page 1161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 11th International Conference on Medical Imaging and Computer Assisted Intervention, MICCAI 2008, was held at the Helen and Martin Kimmel Center of New York University, New York City, USA on September 6–10, 2008. MICCAI is the premier international conference in this domain, with - depth papers on the multidisciplinary ?elds of biomedical image computing and analysis, computer assisted intervention and medical robotics. The conference brings together biological scientists, clinicians, computer scientists, engineers, mathematicians, physicists and other interested researchers and o?ers them a forum to exchange ideas in these exciting and rapidly growing ?elds. The conference is both very selective and very attractive: this year we - ceived a record number of 700 submissions from 34 countries and 6 continents, fromwhich258papers were selectedfor publication, whichcorrespondsto a s- cess rate of approximately 36%. Some interesting facts about the distribution of submitted and accepted papers are shown graphically at the end of this preface. The paper selection process this year was based on the following procedure, which included the introduction of several novelties over previous years. 1. A ProgramCommittee (PC) of 49 members was recruited by the Program Chairs,to getthenecessarybody ofexpertiseandgeographicalcoverage. All PC members agreed in advance to participate in the ?nal paper selection process. 2. Key words grouped in 7 categories were used to describe the content of the submissions and the expertise of the reviewers.

Book Synopsis Biomechanics of Lower Limb Prosthetics by : Mark R. Pitkin
Download or read book Biomechanics of Lower Limb Prosthetics written by Mark R. Pitkin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-10-14 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword from a Clinical Biomechanist, Applied Physiologist and Prosthetist teaching graduate students in Prosthetics & Orthotics. While there are many books on Biomechanics, arguably the quintessential science of limb prosthetics, none addresses the fundamental principles in sufficient detail and depth to be practically useful to the prosthetist, rehabilitation specialist or researcher. Dr. Pitkin’s monograph is an exemplary collection of theoretical principles from his research and o- ers, presented in its clinical and applied biomechanics form. The textbook provides an excellent overview of the many facets of lower limb prosthetic design and engineering for the ardent clinician researcher and student. The book delves into many of the basic concepts that are required knowledge for the clinician and the scientist to have as the foundation for their work. Dr. Pitkin has an e- quent manner in which he reflects on the history and literature to tell the storied evolution of prosthetic design . He takes the reader on a journey to consider his theories, which have substantive foundations to contemplate. By the end of chapter one, we have the basic h- tory and an appreciation for the rationale behind the “rolling joint ankle” with evidence to support his theoretical views.

Book Synopsis Atlas of Amputations and Limb Deficiencies by : Douglas G. Smith
Download or read book Atlas of Amputations and Limb Deficiencies written by Douglas G. Smith and published by American Academy of Orthpaedic Surgeons. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the major advances in the field since the last edition in 1992. New chapters cover amputee care in wartime, the role of the Krukenberg proceedure in developing countries, the rise of the amputee consumer movement, and the rapidly expanding role of sports and recreation for amputees, as well as the more controversial topics of osseointegration and transplantation. The major influence of orthopaedic surgeons in the development of both amputation surgery and prosthetics is noted in the greatly expanded chapter on the history of these fields. A chapter on absence of the lumbar spine and sacrum has been added, as well as a chapter on surgical revision.

Book Synopsis Stress Distribution and Optimum Design of Polypropylene and Laminated Transtibial Prosthetic Sockets. FEM and Experimental Implementations by : Hayder Al-Shuka
Download or read book Stress Distribution and Optimum Design of Polypropylene and Laminated Transtibial Prosthetic Sockets. FEM and Experimental Implementations written by Hayder Al-Shuka and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2017 in the subject Medicine - Other, , language: English, abstract: This study presents analyses for below knee prosthetic socket of a human. Socket stress distribution is performed on three types of socket, polypropylene (5mm), polypropylene (3mm) and a standard laminate (3mm) sockets to determine the stresses path through the prosthetic socket during the gait cycle. It is found that heel strike phase is the critical phase. The stresses increase at the socket base while the maximum deflection is maximum at the patellar region of the socket. This work is achieved by finite element program, ANSYS. The development of design specifications of a below the knee prosthetic socket is presented in this study for successful ambulation and comfort. Seven different design models are created by changing the socket wall thickness and the material. Polypropylene socket gives the best results with regard to the allowable deflection for the regions of the pressure relief areas of the stump. The effect of varying the modulus of elasticity on the polypropylene socket is considered in this study. Three models are analyzed with different tensile creep moduli during different periods. It is found that the polypropylene socket will enlarge in size with time. An experimental study is conducted to compare the strength of five prosthetic sockets made of different materials. Compression, three-point flexural and tensile tests are implemented by the Testometric machine. The laminate sockets have larger compressive stiffness than polypropylene while polypropylene has larger flexural stiffness than the tested laminates except for socket No.5.
