Book excerpt: The Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea comprise a sensitive and important region, both oceanographically and climatically. A better understanding of the history of climate and marine environmental conditions in this region provides valuable insight into the processes that affect climate globally. This dissertation furthers our understanding of these factors via investigations of the isotopes of corals and seawater, as well as coral growth. Results improve our understanding of how the isotope and coral growth records from the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea reflect recent environmental conditions, enhancing our ability to reconstruct the history of climate in this important region. Analysis of the relationship between salinity and oxygen isotopic composition of seawater from the Texas/Louisiana continental shelf and Flower Garden Banks yield improved understanding of the relative contribution of the fresh water sources into the northern Gulf of Mexico, and also the oxygen isotopic composition of open-ocean seawater in this region. Variations in the growth of long-lived coral cores from the Flower Garden Banks are compared to local and regional climate conditions, particularly winter air temperatures. During the latter half of the twentieth century, a close correlation has existed between slow coral growth and cold wintertime air temperatures along the Gulf Coast, which are due to a meridional orientation of the North American jet stream (associated with the Pacific/North American climate pattern). Existing long coral growth records are too limited to assess this relationship during earlier years. Knowledge of the marine radiocarbon (14C) reservoir age is important for understanding carbon cycling and calibrating the radiocarbon ages of marine samples. Radiocarbon concentrations in corals from the Flower Garden Banks, Veracruz, and the Cariaco Basin are measured and used to determine the surface ocean 14C reservoir ages for the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. Results also indicate that the post-nuclear weapons testing [delta] 14C values of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea differ. This difference is attributed to the advection of 14C-depleted surface water from the Southern Hemisphere into the Caribbean Sea. The results reported in this dissertation provide valuable information for understanding the marine environment when using carbonate proxies to study and reconstruct past climate and marine conditions in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean.

Book excerpt: Work presented in this dissertation investigates the response of the Pacific Ocean to climate change in the geologic record while evaluating methods to be used for future investigations. A particular focus of this work has been the interplay of ocean productivity, air and water circulation, and the resulting impacts on ocean chemistry. Investigations into ocean productivity in this dissertation have focused on changes in the accumulation rates of marine barite, an established proxy for export production. Across one of the most dramatic climate change intervals in the geologic record, the Eocene-Oligocene Transition, we found that the shift from greenhouse conditions to icehouse conditions corresponds to a sharp decline in export production. This decline in export production was synchronous with changes in the carbonate oxygen and carbon isotope shifts. Additionally, a previous unobserved peak in export production was identified before the onset of glaciation. We postulate that this increase in export production may correlate to an increase in carbon sequestration and should be further explored as a contributing factor to the CO2 drawdown proposed at this time. To understand the impacts of climate change on a more regional scale, ocean sediments from the Oregon shelf were collected. To investigate changes in oxygenation and sediment sources over the previous 1000+ years, this study utilized multiple proxies, including trace metal abundances and carbon and nitrogen isotopes. The results of this study do not show evidence of persistent hypoxia in the geologic record, inconsistent with the modern observations being driven by climate cycles which occurred pre-anthropogenically. The reminder of this dissertation focuses on the expansion of lead (Pb) isotopes for paleoceanographic reconstructions. Measurement of Pb isotopes in detrital fractions from across the Pacific Ocean, presented in Chapter 3, show the differentiation of various dust sources across the Pacific, along with the ability of this fraction to illustrate the location of the intertropical convergence zone. This study provides a more extensive description of Pb isotopes in potential source regions, creating a framework for the interpretation of future down core investigations and highlights some considerations regarding sample processing and analyses. To better understand sources of Pb to seawater, ferromanganese grain coatings were measured across the Pacific Ocean with a particular focus on the eastern equatorial Pacific (EEP). This study shows that dust deposition, particularly Chinese loess in the North Pacific and New Zealand loess in the south Pacific, is the dominant source of Pb to the open ocean. However, additional sources are needed to account for the measured Pb isotopic values, potentially including North Pacific Intermediate water in the North Pacific (Pb in which is sources from local pacific rim volcanism) and a yet unidentified source in the South Pacific (possibly South America or Australia dust). In addition, this investigation illustrates the possible regional impact of hydrothermal fluids in the EEP, with ferromanganese accumulations up to ~3000 km from the probable hydrothermal fluid source showing a measurable influence in the Pb isotopic ratios.

The high load factor resulting from the fluid properties and the predictable resource characteristics make tidal and wave energy resources attractive and advantageous for power generation and advantageous when compared to other renewable energies. The technologies are just beginning to reach technical and economic viability to make them potential commercial power sources in the near future. While only a few small projects currently exist, the technology is advancing rapidly and has huge potential for generating bulk power. Moreover, international treaties related to climate control and dwindling fossil fuel resources have encouraged us to harness energy sustainably from such marine renewable sources. Several demonstrative projects have been scheduled to capture tidal and wave energies. A number of these projects have now reached a relatively mature stage and are close to completion. However, very little is known to the academic world about these technologies beyond the basics of their energy conversion principles. While research emphasis is more towards hydrodynamics and turbine design, very limited activities are witnessed in power conversion interface, control, and power quality aspects. Regarding this emerging and promising area of research, this book aims to present recent results, serving to promote successful marine renewable energies integration to the grid or to standalone microgrids.
