Findings were that at all engine loads (from idling to full load) the emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), unburnt hydrocarbon (UHC) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were low compared to conventional diesel (PD), although the emissions of NOX were higher. The brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) for the blends dropped while the brake thermal efficiency (BTE) increased with load for all blends until intermediate load when it decreased. WPPO blends had a higher viscosity compared to PD. CO emissions for blend 95/WPPO5 at all engine speed idling modes were 285 ppm, 298 ppm, 320ppm, and 388 ppm while PD emissions were 270 ppm, 295 ppm, 315 ppm and 365 ppm respectively. The values for UHC for blend 95/WPPO5 at all modes were 35 ppm, 28 ppm, 22 ppm, and 18 ppm compared to PD fuel with 20ppm, 25 ppm, 30 ppm, and 40ppm respectively. The NOX emissions for PD fuel at all modes were 175 ppm, 225 ppm, 300 ppm and 375 ppm compared to blend 95/WPPO5 at 195 ppm, 245 ppm, 335 ppm, and 397 ppm. The BSFC values for blend 95/WPPO5 at all modes were 0.48 kg/kW.h, 0.41 kg/kW.h, 0.35 kg/kW.h and 0.4 kg/kW.h compared to PD at 0.45 kg/kW.h, 0.39 kg/kW.h, 0.33 kg/kW.h and 035 kg/kW.h respectively.

Assessment of Technologies for Improving Light Duty Vehicle Fuel Economy estimates the potential fuel savings and costs to consumers of available technology combinations for three types of engines: spark-ignition gasoline, compression-ignition diesel, and hybrid. According to its estimates, adopting the full combination of improved technologies in medium and large cars and pickup trucks with spark-ignition engines could reduce fuel consumption by 29 percent at an additional cost of $2,200 to the consumer. Replacing spark-ignition engines with diesel engines and components would yield fuel savings of about 37 percent at an added cost of approximately $5,900 per vehicle, and replacing spark-ignition engines with hybrid engines and components would reduce fuel consumption by 43 percent at an increase of $6,000 per vehicle. The book focuses on fuel consumption-the amount of fuel consumed in a given driving distance-because energy savings are directly related to the amount of fuel used. In contrast, fuel economy measures how far a vehicle will travel with a gallon of fuel. Because fuel consumption data indicate money saved on fuel purchases and reductions in carbon dioxide emissions, the book finds that vehicle stickers should provide consumers with fuel consumption data in addition to fuel economy information.

Book excerpt: Biodiesel and different biodiesel-diesel blends were run in a production compression ignition engine to determine optimized engine control module (ECM) settings for each fuel. Focus was placed on a combination of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) ratio and start of injection (SOI) timing, as these parameters are easily modified and have significant effects on engine emissions. Tests were run at low to moderate engine load at different engine speeds. It was found that with the ECM0́9s default settings, higher blends of biodiesel tended to result in higher NOx emissions and lower soot emissions, in line with previous studies. It was also found that increasing the EGR ratio to account for the different stoichiometric air-fuel ratio of biodiesel was effective in bringing NOx emissions to similar or lower levels compared with those of petroleum diesel. At low load conditions, improved fuel economy could also be achieved by advancing the start of injection relative to the ECM default timing. Pure soybean biodiesel was also run with high rates of EGR and modified injection schemes in order to achieve simultaneous reduction of NOx and soot emissions consistent with low temperature combustion. At low load conditions, increasing the EGR ratio to high levels was sufficient to achieve very low NOx and soot emissions. As engine load increased, high levels of EGR brought NOx emissions to very low levels, but soot emissions increased substantially. The amount of EGR was increased to the point of combustion deterioration without seeing a reduction in soot emissions. Thus, the engine0́9s default injection strategy needed to be modified in order to achieve low temperature combustion. Strategies found effective were a reduced amount of pre-injection, later injection timing, and a combination of the two. With these strategies, low temperature combustion was achieved through a moderate range of engine load. To see the effect of engine speed, cases were run at different speeds with a constant load. Modifications to the injection strategy were found to be beneficial at different engine speeds.

Book excerpt: Biodiesel is an environmentally friendly alternative diesel fuel consisting of the alkyl esters of fatty acids which are expected to play a significant role in reducing overall CO2 emissions. Biodiesel is produced commercially by a chemical reaction called transesterification which is a chemical process to lower the viscosity of the vegetable oils. Since Biodiesel is an oxygenated, sulfur free fuel, it typically reduces engine out emissions except for the oxides of nitrogen (NOX). The chemical and physical properties of the fatty acids, as well as the effect of molecular structure, determine the overall properties of biodiesel fuel. Investigations into the impact of FAME properties on diesel engines are highly topical, as higher blends of biodiesel are introduced. The aim of this work is to perform a comprehensive study on the use of biodiesel fuel in production diesel engines, and its impact on emissions, performance and fuel consumption. This thesis has shown that the use of biodiesel fuel reduces the engine out emissions of CO, HC and PM (except at sub-zero temperatures), and causes a slight increase in NOX emissions and fuel consumption compared to baseline diesel fuel. However, the lower exhaust gas temperatures seen when using biodiesel blends leads to reduced catalyst conversion efficiency and an adverse effect on tailpipe emissions. The cylinder pressure and rate of heat release profiles of biodiesel blends are very similar to those of baseline diesel fuel when similar torque is demanded from the engine with relatively similar start of combustion for the main charge. Biodiesel blends show a slightly quicker rise in the rate of heat release and higher peak values compared to baseline diesel fuel. In the case of matched pedal positions, the ignition delay time decreases slightly with biodiesel use at lower engine load conditions compared to baseline diesel fuel. The sensitivity of engine performance and emissions with B25 is more pronounced for EGR rate, rail pressure, and main injection timing variations than for baseline diesel fuel. Finally, an adverse thermal impact of using biodiesel fuel on the performance of diesel oxidation catalyst was observed compared to baseline diesel however, no solid evidence of exhaust gas HC speciation effects was found.

These engines are less fuel consumed with higher brake thermal efficiency. However, compression ignition engines produce higher pollution in NOx and PM emission as well as cause several negative drawbacks to the environment. Most countries in the world have regulated several regulations to reduce the emission from the engines. Other than that, the introduction of biodiesel in the engines is beneficial and proven to reduce the emission significantly. However, biodiesel has higher density and viscosity with lower heating value as compared to mineral diesel. Fuel additives are among other methods that proven to modify the properties of biodiesel to be comparable with mineral diesel without doing any engine modification. Although fuel additives' ability to reduce harmful emissions is well known in the literature, the mechanism for these additives is not well understood when operated in the four-stroke, four-cylinder diesel engines. Two alcohol-based additives, methanol and ethanol were diluted with B 20 blend (20% biodiesel + 80% mineral diesel) with the formulation of 5% by volume. The test fuels; mineral diesel, B100 (palm-diesel), B20 blend and B20-alcohol blends (B20 E5 and B20 M5) were investigated on a Mitsubishi 4D68 four stroke, four-cylinder water-cooled diesel engine incorporating sensors for in-cylinder pressure measurement and thermocouples. There were two operating modes dealing with these fuels, which the first mode been conducted on increasing engine speeds at 50% throttle position. While as for the second mode, these fuels were operated at three different engine loads, 0.05 MPa, 0.4 MPa and 0.7 MPa with the engine constant speed of 2500 rpm. The effect of test fuels on brake power, brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), brake thermal efficiency (BTE), combustion (in-cylinder pressure, rate of heat release, cylinder temperature) and NOx, NO, CO and CO2 emissions were investigated. Results found that the performance of diesel engine improved with the use of alcohol (ethanol and methanol) in the B20 blends especially in comparison to mineral diesel, B100 and B20. Overall, the results indicated that when compared to mineral diesel, B100, B20, B20 E5 and B20 M5 have higher brake thermal efficiency. The use of alcohol as a fuel additive in the B20 blend has improved the combustion characteristics when the loads were applied to the engine. Besides, the exhaust emission for the B20 E5 and B20 M5 were fairly reduced when compared to mineral diesel.

Book excerpt: Biodiesel has been a promising clean alternative fuel to fossil fuels, which reduces the emissions that are released by fossil fuels, and possibly reduces the energy crisis caused by the exhaustion of petroleum resources in the near future. Biodiesel is replacing diesel as an alternative fuel for internal combustion engines. Previous research studies have shown that biodiesel can greatly reduce carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC) and particulate matter (PM) emissions compared to diesel fuels, but very few studies have shown a reduction in total nitrogen oxides (NOx). At present, B20 (20% biodiesel in the total fuel mix) is being used commonly in the US due to its material compatibility to changing weather conditions, emission benefits and costs. Currently, Canada is planning to use 5% of biodiesel by 2015. The objective of this study is to test the feasibility of biodiesel in cold climates such as Canada. The biodiesel used is made of canola oil obtained from a local supermarket and winter diesel is used as a reference fuel. Three different series were used. The first series was biodiesel/diesel with six blends (B0, B5, B10, B20, B50 and B100). The second series was biodiesel/diesel plus 2% of a chemical additive (B0, B5A, B10A, B20A, B50A and B100A). The final was kerosene/biodiesel series (K0, K5, K10, K20, K50 and K100). Chemical additive (Wintron XC30) is used to lower the cloud point of the blends and this is the first attempt to investigate its effect on engine emissions. On the other hand, there are limited studies on kerosene being treated as a blending fuel, where it is mainly used to lower the cloud point of the blends to investigate the feasibility of biodiesel in a cold climate such as the winter season in Canada and suggest an appropriate solution for the future of biofuel. Engine performance and emission concentrations are investigated by determining the break specific fuel consumption (bsfc), fuel conversion efficiency and measuring emission concentrations of CO, HC, NO, NO2 and NOx using gas analysers. Engine tests are performed on a constant rated speed at three different load conditions. A comparison is made for the three series. Most of the blends have shown improved emissions compared to fossil diesel. B5A demonstrated a lower cloud point than fossil diesel, and the kerosene series showed excellent results at high load conditions.

Book excerpt: The developments in alternative energy sources have become gradually more applicable with the increasing exploration for an adequate alternative to oil-based energy. The depletion of the amount of fossil fuels worldwide is steadily creating an incentive to replace them, either partially or completely, with bio-fuels. The purpose of this study is to define and provide a comparison for biofuels, mineral diesel (D2) and straight vegetable oil (SVO). The main properties of fuels have been investigated experimentally in the Chemical Laboratory of the University of Malaysia in Pahang. There are seven fuels, including 5% Biodiesel blended with 95% mineral diesel (B5), 15% Biodiesel blended with 85% mineral diesel (B15), 20% Biodiesel blended with 80% mineral diesel (B20), 50% Biodiesel blended with 50% mineral diesel (B50), 100% Biodiesel (B100), Straight Vegetable Oil (SVO), and Diesel fuel (D2). Tests were conducted to determine the effect of biodiesel blended with diesel fuel on the following properties: the energy content, density, cetane number, viscosity, cloud and pour point, flash point, acid value and moisture content. From the properties testing, the small proportions of biodiesel blended, which included B5, B15, B20 and D2, were analysed for their performance in GT-Power engine simulation. Subsequently, some of properties that have been determined earlier will be used as an input in a GT-Power simulation model. The GT-Power model was built for a single cylinder diesel engine. The input model's engine specifications follow the diesel engine Yanmar TF-120M. Then the engine performance will be compared and discussed between the various blends of fuel. From the graph tendency, B5 is considerably pre-eminent for the good performance of the diesel engine. The higher energy content shows good agreement with the best performance of engine. This is because the lower energy content needs more BSFC to inject more fuel to gain equal brake torque and the same level of power. Nonetheless, the consequence of the lowest value of BSFC is obviously desirable. Attention was also alerted to the properties which influence the injection and engine characteristics extensively, thus affecting the quality of engine performance which also affects injector lubrication and fuel atomisation. Generally, biodiesel fuel blends can improve lubricant; nevertheless, the higher viscosity levels have a tendency to form larger droplets on injection that can cause exhaust smoke and poor combustion reactions.
