Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed-method study was to assess student perceptions of teaching presence, social presence, and cognitive presence, measured by the Community of Inquiry Sacle [sic] (Arbaugh et al., 2008), through group collaboration via online and face-to-face instruction. Thirty-seven teacher education students participated in this quasi-experimental study at a land-grant university in the Pacific Northwest in fall 2009. Participants in the experimental and control groups engaged in three group projects: teacher interview reports, group journal article summaries, and case study discussions. The participants completed the Community of Inquiry Scale which was used as a pre- and post-test. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected to cross-validate data analyses. The results of computing a multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) showed that there were significant differences in student perception regarding teaching presence and social presence after an eight-week intervention. Online participants reported significantly lower scores in teaching presence and social presence. The results of the follow-up analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) indicated that online participants rated significantly lower scores in the categories of facilitating discourse and direct instruction under teaching presence than face-to-face participants. Additionally, online participants rated significantly lower scores in the category of affective expression under social presence than their face-to-face counterparts. There was no significant difference in cognitive presence between the two groups. Qualitative data including students' responses to both open-ended questions and face-to-face interviews triangulated the results from the quantitative analyses and provided interpretative support for the quantitative data.

The campus climate has affected a student's ability to persist through college and ultimately has impacted his or her entire life. Many campus climate studies have been conducted at universities, and most of these studies have focused on racial climate implications. The purpose of this study was to explore attitudes toward gays and lesbians expressed by community college students, and to determine the impact that these attitudes had on students' perceptions of the campus climate. A two-phase, sequential mixed-methods case study format was used to investigate the experiences of college students at a Florida community college. Quantitative investigation, applying the Modern Homonegativity Scale, was used to determine the level of homonegativity, also known as attitudes toward gays and lesbians, as expressed by community college students. Qualitative investigation was used to determine how community college students perceived their campus climate and how the level of homonegativity could have impacted campus climate. The four research questions included: 1. Do differences in attitudes exist toward gays and lesbians between male and female community college students? 2. Do community college students of different racial/ethnic backgrounds have different attitudes toward gays and lesbians? 3. Do community college students of different age groups have different attitudes toward gays and lesbians? 4. What effects do these attitudes toward gays and lesbians have on the overall perception of campus climate on a community college campus, as perceived by the students? This study indicated that students at a Florida community college had slightly above neutral attitudes toward gay men and lesbian women. The study results also found that the slightly above neutral attitudes were reflected in the students'perceptions of campus climate.

Book excerpt: The demand for Community College Baccalaureate (CCB) degrees is rising due to increasing costs of educational obtainment resulting in decreased access. Also, universities are not always accessible geographically or academically to many students. Many students are limited in time and financial resources, and have family and job responsibilities, limiting their ability to relocate to a university. The focus of this study was to explore the perceptions of students regarding the need for the CCB, the effectiveness of the CCB, reasons why students would choose the CCB, and the fields of CCB degrees students would choose. Specifically, this study compared the results among student survey respondents based on their primary campus attended, age, gender, race/ethnicity, number of dependents, and employment status as well as their need for the CCB. All full-time and part-time students from a rural community college in Northeast Mississippi were asked to participate in the survey. Approximately 30% of respondents indicated that their only realistic option to obtain a bachelor’s degree would be through their local community college. A majority of respondents perceived the CCB to be effective. And, respondents indicated that the factors that influenced their choice of the CCB were cost, location, work responsibilities, family responsibilities, admiration for current school, and familiarity for current school. The specific degree fields that respondents indicated they would choose if they were to obtain a CCB, from greatest interest to least, were: health professions, business, education, public administration/social work, "other", liberal arts and sciences, and psychology. When testing the differences in perception of effectiveness of the CCB between demographic groups, the CCB was perceived to be more effective by respondents who were older, had 1 dependent or 5 or more dependents, and who saw the CCB as their only option. When testing the differences in perceptions of reasons to choose the CCB, respondents who were older indicated more reasons for choosing the CCB.

Book excerpt: Although data support the notion that students' character is influenced by their college experience, research has not addressed the confluence between students' perceptions of institutional characteristics and their moral development. The purpose of this study was to ascertain if a relationship existed between undergraduate students' perceptions of the strength of community and their level of moral development, and whether that relationship varied significantly based on students' levels of community engagement, conceptual development, and certain demographic subgroup comparisons, defined as classification, residential status, and gender. Utilizing three instruments, this correlation study collected self-reported, quantitative data online from 98 respondents at a small private Christian liberal arts college in the southeast. Students' perceptions of the strength of community and their level of moral development were measured by the College and University Community Inventory (CUCI) (McDonald, 1996) and the Defining Issues Test (DIT) (Rest, 1979) respectively. The Community Engagement Inventory (CEI), a descriptive survey designed by the researcher, assessed participants' demographic information and level of community engagement. Data were collected online and analyzed for significant correlations across the variables. Due to a less than ideal return rate and therefore, a slightly unrepresentative sample, there were not always ideal numbers of participants for correlations and subgroup comparison analyses. Students' perceptions of the strength of community and their level of moral development were not significantly related for this sample. The only variable that was found to have a significant relationship between moral development and perception of community was the low level of conceptual development (cumulative GPA). Analysis of covariance was administered to increase the power of the significance test between different groups on moral development by reducing the variability of perception of community, the covariate. This statistical test revealed that the relationship between moral development and perception of community varied significantly with respect to students' levels of community relationships, conceptual development, and classification. The data were discussed to assess current students' moral development and perceptions of community, to reconsider the variables in the campus environment that may relate to moral development, to suggest the integration of curricular and cocurricular initiatives within the campus community that promote character development, and to make recommendations for further research.
