Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to examine 1) if students felt servant leadership was present within the Approved Clinical Instructors (ACI's) of the programs surveyed; and 2) if those students who perceived their ACI's to be servant leaders also had more student satisfaction, and greater student success. Based on the literature search conducted, there was little to no research found on servant leadership in athletic training clinical education, especially from the athletic training students' perspective. Responses were obtained from 11 of the 27 Athletic Training Education Programs that were randomly selected for participation. Bivariate correlations were run on the thirty five student surveys that were collected and deemed complete. Regression analyses were run if a strong correlation was identified among any of the variables. Servant leadership had a strong influence on satisfaction in student athletic trainers whether from the ACI or the clinical site (n= 35, r=.877, p=.000; n= 35, r=.601, p=.000). Regression analysis was run showing that 83.4% of variance in student satisfaction is accounted for by variation in servant leadership qualities of approved clinical instructors (Y=--2.53+.583x). Student success, as defined in this study, was not influenced by servant leadership qualities regardless of the ACI or clinical affiliation (p>.05)"--document.

The expanding roles and responsibilities of Program Directors (PDs) and Clinical Education Coordinators (CECs) in colleges and universities has led to a multifaceted position that has increased in complexity and workload. The purpose of this study is to investigate leadership factors impacting program director and clinical education coordinator in athletic training education programs. Athletic Training PDs and CECs were asked to respond to questions related to demographics, motivations for taking on the role, professional identity, prior leadership training, time to competence, primary stressors of the role, and length of service/retention. A quantitative cross-sectional web-based survey was used to obtain the responses of PDs and CECs of CAATE accredited athletic training programs. An email request was sent to 807 individuals (391 PDs and 416 CECs) requesting they complete a Qualtrics survey. A total of 128 PDs (32.7%) and 181 CECs (43.5%) completed and returned the survey utilizing the survey link provided. Analyses used were chi -square, Wilcoxon-Mann Whitney, MANOVA and independent t-test . Findings indicated there is a statistically significant difference between athletic training program directors and clinical education coordinators in their motivation for taking on the role, professional identity, main stressors, and length of service. Results also indicated that PDs or CECs receive minimal leadership training to perform in their roles. Ideas for PD and CEC training are discussed as well as other implications, limitations and suggestions for future research."--Leaf 3.

A qualitative case study was used to examine preceptors and students perspectives of clinical education experience to answer the following research questions: (1) To what extent are students engaged in their clinical experiences, and if engaged, how do they describe that engagement? and (2) What role(s) does engagement have in athletic training clinical education at KSU? This study used the Social Learning Theory (SLT) as the theoretical framework to understand engagement. Participants were seven preceptors and seven students in KSUs athletic training program (ATP). Data were collection from two interviews and two observations through hand written field notes and audio recordings of interviews during the Fall 2017 semester.Findings revealed engagement in clinical education to be an active learning experience that requires application of knowledge (mental and physical), which occurred through observations, hands-on skills, discussion, and purposeful dialogue. In addition, learning experiences that incorporated complex cognitive processing were considered to have deeper engagement. The preceptor/student relationship was recognized as the factor that had the biggest influence in engagement in clinical education. Lastly, the role of engagement was identified as the application of knowledge to an authentic situation, which acknowledged a connection between didactic and clinical education.The implications of this research highlight the need to develop stronger clinical education experiences, provide preceptor training on teaching, assessment, and evaluation of students, and examination of athletic training clinical education model.

Book excerpt: Modern leadership styles such as transformational and transactional leadership are well documented and practiced within the intercollegiate athletic industry. Although the case, inequities and historic scandals have continued to negatively impact the industry. As a result, practitioners and scholars alike have advocated for a reexamination of various leadership styles and practices. Various scholars have proposed that servant leadership may be a solution to the inequities and scandals faced in the industry. While the benefits of servant leadership have been well documented in literature, no study has examined the antecedents within the context of intercollegiate athletics. The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics, experiences, and practices of servant leadership among Athletic Directors and other senior level administrators. A two-part, mixed method approach was utilized in this study. The first phase included the utilization of the Servant Leadership Questionnaire (SLQ), and multiple regression analysis. The second phase include semi-structure interviewing of athletic directors and other senior level administrators. The results of this study indicated three main findings: First, senior level administrators exhibit servant leadership characteristics—people oriented, humility, authenticity, commitment to ethical behavior, providing direction, and wisdom. Secondly, childhood experiences, role models, religious experiences and professional development experiences influenced servant leadership behavior among senior level administrators. Thirdly, senior level administrators who exhibit servant leadership characteristics, implement various people-centric practices that demonstrate servant leadership behaviors. The results, practical implications and potential for future studies were also discussed in this study.

However, little is currently known regarding the methods and the extent of leadership development in athletic training professional preparation programs. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine student and faculty perspectives of the extent and ways that athletic training professional preparation programs address leadership in their curricula. Data were obtained via surveys completed by 71 students and 83 athletic training professional level program directors. Overall, both groups of participants affirmed that it was important that leadership was addressed in athletic training professional programs. Several formal and informal uses of leadership development methods (e.g., peer-learning, professional organizational involvement, textbooks, and workshops) were examined. The many ways in which leadership was addressed within the respondents' athletic training programs suggests that the profession is comparable with other allied health professions when it comes to informal leadership education in both curricular and clinical portions of athletic training programs. Formal leadership training was reported to be at low levels by students and program directors, a deficit that is recommended to be addressed as more programs consider converting from a Bachelor's degree level to a Master's degree level professional program.

Book excerpt: In today's system of higher education, administrators are committed to developing students into leaders (Bush, 2009). One area for leadership development is during non-curricular programming that is typically offered by a university's Division of Student Affairs. A Division of Student Affairs, the administrative division which oversees campus recreation has the opportunity to work with students through sports, fitness, adventure trips, and challenge course facilitation. The current study examined servant leadership skills among students who engaged in one university's challenge course facilitator training program, which served as an apprenticeship. This training has an intentional focus on leadership development. A semi-structured interview was performed with each student (N=14) enrolled in the apprenticeship. Meetings were held at or near the completion of the apprenticeship, which allowed study participants to reflect on personal growth through the training program. Results illustrated that servant leadership development was perceived as a major outcome by the challenge course student facilitators after the students completed the apprenticeship. The student informants shared examples of how they planned to take what they had learned through the apprenticeship program and apply it to other parts of their lives. Implications for improving the challenge course facilitator training and for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Context : Clinical education comprises over half the time students spend in an athletic training program. Preceptors are tasked with overseeing these clinical experiences and mentoring students while simultaneously engaging in patient care. Preceptors have a limited training in clinical education or background in andragogy. Preceptors have previously reported teaching and learning as their highest topic of interest in preceptorship professional development. Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine the awareness of and how often preceptors use specific clinical teaching models within athletic training clinical education. This study also examines the preceptor's perceptions of the benefits and barriers to using specific clinical teaching models and the perceptions of preceptor training in educating them on clinical teaching models. Design: Sequential mixed methods. Setting: Online qualitative survey and virtual qualitative semi-structured interviews. Patients or Other Participants: 165 preceptors affiliated with masters and bachelors level accredited athletic training programs participated in the survey and 10 participants completed follow-up interviews. Data Collection and Analysis: Surveys were administered via Qualtrics, and interviews were completed using Zoom. Frequency tables and chi square tests of independence were used to analyze the survey data. A phenomenological approach of inquiry was used to analyze the interview data. Trustworthiness was established with member checking, triangulation using 2 data collection methods and independent data analysts, and external peer review. Results: The Supervision, Questioning, Feedback (SQF) model was used by most preceptors. The One-Minute Preceptor (OMP) or the SNAPPS model were less common. Components related to the SQF model were used more frequently, on a daily or weekly basis over components unique to the OMP or SNAPPS models. Participants described using teaching techniques similar to the SQF model but acknowledge they are generally unaware of clinical teaching models that exist. Participants report perceptor training focuses more on programmatic administration rather than clinical teaching. Only 68% of preceptors reported completing any institutional preceptor training related to clinical teaching, and 24% have completed the Master Preceptor Level I training program. Participants would like to have consistent and ongoing training that incorporates experiential learning to educate them on clinical teaching models as they did display enthusiasm towards improving their clinical teaching abilities. Participants report clinical teaching models are beneficial in helping students build confidence in clinical reasoning, providing a structured teaching strategy, and fostering a positive learning environment. However, the biggest barier reported is balancing role strain in the simultaneous role of being a healthcare provider and educator. Conclusions: Preceptors are largely unaware that clinical teaching models exist. Most preceptors believe preceptor training does not adequately prepare them how to teach in the clinical setting. The context and frequency of institutional preceptor training needs to be reassessed to ensure preceptors are being adequately educated on clinical teaching. Enhancing their clinical teaching practices will reduce preceptor role strain, improve their professional growth, and improve student learning.
