Book excerpt: With examples drawn from aerospace, electronics, household appliance, personal products, and automotive industries, Lean Assembly covers the engineering of assembly operations through: Characterizing the demand in terms of volume by product and product family, component consumption, seasonal variability and life cycle. Matching the physical structure of the shop floor to the demand with the goal of approaching takt-driven production as closely as possible. Working out the details of assembly tasks station by station, including station sizing, tooling, fixturing, operator instructions, part presentation, conveyance between stations, and the geometry of assembly lines as a whole. Incorporating mistake-proofing, successive inspection, and test operations for quality assurance. Lean Assembly differs from most other books on lean manufacturing in that it focuses on technical content as a driver for implementation methods. The emphasis is on exactly what should be done. This book should be the "dog-eared" and "penciled-in" resource on every assembly engineer's desk.

Book excerpt: Systems Self-Assembly is the only book to showcase state-of-the-art self-assembly systems that arise from the computational, biological, chemical, physical and engineering disciplines. Written by world experts in each area, it provides a coherent, integrated view of both book practice examples and new trends with a clearly presented computational flavor. The unifying thread throughout the text is the computational nature of self-assembling systems. This book consists of 13 chapters dealing with a variety of topics such as the patterns of self-organised nanoparticle assemblies; biomimetic design of dynamic self-assembling systems; computing by self-assembly involving DNA molecules, polyominoes, and cells; evolutionary design of a model of self-assembling chemical structures; self-assembly as an engineering concept across size scales; and probabilistic analysis of self-assembled molecular networks. Other chapters focus on the programming language of dynamic self-assembly; self-assembled computer architectures; simulation of self-assembly processes using abstract reduction systems; computer aided search for optimal self-assembly systems; theoretical aspects of programmable self-assembly; emergent cooperativity in large-scale patterns; and automated self-assembling programming. Systems Self-Assembly is an ideal reference for scientists, researchers and post-graduate students; practitioners in industry, engineering and science; and managers, decision-makers and policy makers. The only book to showcases state-of-the-art self-assembly systems that arise from the computational, biological, chemical, physical and engineering disciplines Coherent, integrated view of both book practice examples and new trends with a clearly presented computational flavor Written by world experts in each area

Book excerpt: Hailed as one of the key areas of nanoscience likely to shape future scientific research, self-assembly offers the most promising route to true molecular nanotechnology. Focusing on this dynamic new field, Self Assembly: The Science of Things That Put Themselves Together explores nature's self-assembly of structures, the use of it to build engineer

Book excerpt: Some twenty years have elapsed since the first attempts at planning were made by researchers in artificial intelligence. These early programs concentrated on the development of plans for the solution of puzzles or toy problems, like the rearrangement of stacks of blocks. These early programs provided the foundation for the work described in this book, the automatic generation of plans for industrial assembly. As one reads about the complex and sophisticated planners in the current gen eration, it is important to keep in mind that they are addressing real-world problems. Although these systems may become the "toy" systems of tomor row, they are providing a solid foundation for future, more general and more advanced planning tools. As demonstrated by the papers in this book, the field of computer-aided mechanical assembly planning is maturing. It now may include: • geometric descriptions of parts extracted from or compatible with CAD programs; • constraints related to part interference and the use of tools; • fixtures and jigs required for the assembly; • the nature of connectors, matings and other relations between parts; • number of turnovers required during the assembly; • handling and gripping requirements for various parts; • automatic identification of subassemblies. This is not an exhaustive list, but it serves to illustrate the complexity of some of the issues which are discussed in this book. Such issues must be considered in the design of the modern planners, as they produce desirable assembly sequences and precedence relations for assembly.

Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 16th International Symposium on Static Analysis, SAS 2010, held in Perpignan, France in September 2010. The conference was co-located with 3 affiliated workshops: NSAD 2010 (Workshop on Numerical and Symbolic Abstract Domains), SASB 2010 (Workshop on Static Analysis and Systems Biology) and TAPAS 2010 (Tools for Automatic Program Analysis). The 22 revised full papers presented together with 4 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 58 submissions. The papers address all aspects of static analysis including abstract domains, bug detection, data flow analysis, logic programming, systems analysis, type inference, cache analysis, flow analysis, verification, abstract testing, compiler optimization and program verification.
