Book excerpt: Dr. Ronald Lambert was a scientist specializing in stem cell research who was framed for murdering a young subject involved in one of his experiments. Unbeknownst to him, this was just the first step in a global conspiracy. A conspiracy headed by a secret right wing conservative group who were bent on disproving the science behind stem cells for their own religious ends. On the run from authorities, he journeys to Israel and becomes involved in an archaeological excursion that ends in a mausoleum located in India and the possible final resting place in India for the Savior of Man. He will need to be able to use only his trained scientific mind to survive being pursued by corrupt US secret agents long enough to expose the real murderers.

Between 1976 and 1983 an estimated 30,000 Argentines "disappeared" under the military junta. Most were imprisoned and tortured before being murdered by the military. Patricia Marchak interviewed many who were involved in the horror including military personnel who justified the torture and killings, Roman Catholic clergy who encouraged the state to "save" the country from liberation theology, citizens who refused to believe that their government could commit such atrocities, and survivors whose tragic personal experiences attest that a state can indeed terrify and kill its own people.

Book excerpt: Terrorism - the imposition of, or opposition to, government with the threat or fear of force - is mostly regarded as a modern horror, implemented by bombs, hijackings and assassinations. But the origins of terrorism occur far back in the Middle Ages, when the forefathers of the modern world's most uncompromising terrorists - al-Qaeda and the Palestinian suicide bombers, laid down their murderous creed. In the 11th Century, Europe was a region of feudal kingdoms at war, while the Middle East was much more pluralistic, placing less theological restrictions on the lives of individuals or the pursuit of knowledge. It was against this liberal environment that Pope Urban II launched his own version of a 'jihad' - a holy war against the decadent, unholy Islamic world. The reaction in the Islamic world was one of increasing fury, and we continue to reap its consequences centuries later. Islam would become increasingly militant as Muslim sects that preached intolerance and force gained ground. One such heretical sect was the Nizaris, a mystical order of warriors founded by a Persian named Hassan Bin Sabah, later known in the West as the Assassins. Hassan inspired fanatical loyalty in his followers and Assassin cultists were unafraid of capture and death. According to tales brought back to Europe by Marco Polo in 1295, the Old Man of the Mountains fed his followers with hashish before taking them to a secluded garden where they were indulged with forbidden pleasures - principally, the sexual favours of young women. On returning to normal consciousness, the Assassin was told he had experienced the heavenly garden of Paradise and would spend all eternity there, provided he lived in the service of the cult. Assassin cultists would therefore infiltrate enemy courts and army camps, reputedly remaining incognito for years, ready to commit murder upon their master's signal. It was the birth of strategic terrorism. In modern times the legend of the Assassins carries a more symbolic significance. Some intellectuals have drawn a parallel between Hassan Bin Sabah's maxim, "Nothing is true - everything is permissible", describing the dream-trance of the hashish eater, and the 1950s concept of "brainwashing": the belief in turning soldiers into sleeping assassins. Most chilling, however, is the Islamic fundamentalist belief in martyrdom through assassination. High on nothing but piety the suicide bombers, the followers of Osama Bin Laden, and the September 11th terrorists were promised that which their puritan creed denies them on earth - the sexual favours of "the 72 houris virgins] of heaven", as a reward for he who kills in the name of Allah. This illuminating study analyses the origins and history of terrorism, separating legend from truth to uncover the true roots of the fanatical terrorist acts the world has witnessed in the last decade. This will be essential reading for all historians, and for anyone who, up until now, may have thought that outrageous acts of terrorism causing untold civilian casualties, was a curse of the modern age.

At just under five feet tall, Virginia Prodan was no match for the towering 6' 10" gun-wielding assassin the Romanian government sent to her office to take her life. It was not the first time her life had been threatened--nor would it be the last. As a young attorney under Nicolae Ceausescu's brutal communist regime, Virginia had spent her entire life searching for the truth. When she finally found it in the pages of the most forbidden book in all of Romania, Virginia accepted the divine call to defend fellow followers of Christ against unjust persecution in an otherwise ungodly land. For this act of treason, she was kidnapped, beaten, tortured, placed under house arrest, and came within seconds of being executed under the orders of Ceausescu himself. How Virginia not only managed to elude her enemies time and again, but how she also helped expose the appalling secret that would ultimately lead to the demise of Ceausescu's evil empire is one of the most extraordinary stories ever told. A must-read for all generations, Saving My Assassin is the unforgettable account of one woman's search for truth, her defiance in the face of evil, and a surprise encounter that proves without a shadow of a doubt that nothing is impossible with God.

Book excerpt: From a master historian, the definitive account of history's first terrorists An offshoot of the Ismaili Shi'ite sect of Islam, the Assassins were the first group to make systematic use of murder as a political weapon. Established in Iran and Syria in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, they aimed to overthrow the existing Sunni order in Islam and replace it with their own. They terrorized their foes with a series of dramatic murders of Islamic leaders, as well as of some of the Crusaders, who brought their name and fame back to Europe. Professor Lewis traces the history of this radical group, studying its teachings and its influence on Muslim thought. Particularly insightful in light of the rise of the terrorist attacks in the U.S. and in Israel, this account of the Assassins -- whose name is now synonymous with politically motivated murderers -- places recent events in historical perspective and sheds new light on the fanatic mind.

Book excerpt: An eight-hundred-year-old prophecy, an ancient order of warrior monks, a priceless relic and a killer; these are all that stand between the Earth and oblivion. In an epic battle between the forces of darkness and the forces of light, demons and angels fight alongside their human allies for the souls of mankind and the future of the world as we know it. In a race against time the forces of light enlist a murderer to help them swing the battle their way. Will he prove to be the right choice? Only God knows, and He's not saying. God's Assassins has been described alternately as 'the Christian antidote to Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and 'a cross between Piercing the Darkness and Reservoir Dogs'. Whatever else this book is, it's not for the faint hearted. Neither is it for anyone who does not want to face up to the brutality of the spiritual war that surrounds this fallen world. Whether or not you agree with the sentiment and theology of this book, from the first page to the last, you are in for an action-packed adventure that will leave you breathless.

Book excerpt: How do you serve a god of love when in fact you are a killer of men? How can you call yourself just when you are a righteous hammer that knows no fear or remorse? Does such a man deserve the love of a caring and benevolent god? God’s Assassin is a Lovecraftian tale that follows a killer who serves a higher purpose. A man who is not without flaws, who may even be a villain himself. With his faith to guide him, Father Dominic Rujero must navigate a Machiavellian plot that could spell the end of humanity. His travels will take him around the world as he seeks answers. Allies will come and go, but one thing remains true. Rujero is not just fighting for the sake of the world but also for his own humanity. In a world of demons and technology, is there a place for the righteous to call home? The winner of this war will not only inherit the Earth, but all of its inhabitants as well. Inspired by the writings of H. P. Lovecraft, Mike Pondsmith, and Ian Fleming, God’s Assassin is a blend of supernatural thriller, international spy story, and high-intensity cyberpunk adventure. Set in a very near future, one might wonder if such a secret war is being fought right now. When cosmic horrors are real, are there really any rules that matter? Do the actions of one man make any difference at all? And if that man is flawed, does the taint of those flaws also taint the good that he does for the world? The author was surprised by his conclusions and wonders what yours will be.

Book excerpt: • An examination of the interactions of the Christian Knights Templar and their Muslim counterparts, the Assassins, and of the profound changes in Western society that resulted. • Restores the reputation of the secret Muslim order of the Assassins, disparaged as the world's first terrorist group. • Dispels many myths about the Knights Templar and provides the most incisive portrait of them to date. A thousand years ago Christian battled Muslim for possession of a strip of land upon which both their religions were founded. These Crusades changed the course of Western history, but less known is the fact that they also were the meeting ground for two legendary secret societies: The Knights Templar and their Muslim counterparts, the Assassins. In The Templars and the Assassins: The Militia of Heaven, occult scholar and secret society member James Wasserman provides compelling evidence that the interaction of the Knights Templar and the Assassins in the Holy Land transformed the Templars from the Pope's private army into a true occult society, from which they would sow the seeds of the Renaissance and the Western Mystery Tradition. Both orders were destroyed as heretical some seven hundred years ago, but Templar survivors are believed to have carried the secret teachings of the East into an occult underground, from which sprang both Rosicrucianism and Masonry. Assassin survivors, known as Nizari Ismailis, flourish to this day under the spiritual leadership of the Aga Khan. Wasserman strips the myths from both groups and penetrates to the heart of their enlightened beliefs and rigorous practices, delivering the most probing picture yet of these holy warriors.
