Book excerpt: The interface between morphology and phonology has for so long been an intriguing phenomenon that has caught the attention of phonologists and morphologists alike. Along this line of investigation, the focal impetus of the current book is to examine the role of the morpho-phonology interaction in the formation of causative verbs in Moroccan Arabic. In pursuance of this aim, we seek to determine the following: (i) the nature of the causative affix (ii) the morphological process involved (iii) and the driving force of medial gemination. Causative verbs in MA represent a compelling illustration of how morphology and phonology complement each other. In this context, phonological effects appear to be morphologically induced. On the one hand, the morphological component triggers the derivation of some verbal forms (i.e. causatives) from some underlying structure in order to express the meaning of causativity. On the other hand, the phonological component spells out these morphological requirements in the form of a geminate word-medially. This leads to the creation of the causative pattern C G C (or C GV), which is both morphologically and phonologically marked.

Book excerpt: This book is a study of the verbal system of Arabic, both Modern Standard Arabic and Moroccan Arabic. In particular, it develops a theory of the syntax-morphology interface under the purview of the Minimalist Program and Distributed Morphology, the ultimate purpose being to explore the claim that syntax is the only generative mechanism responsible for the formation of words, phrases and sentences. The bulk of the relevant evidence coming from the derivation of verbs, causative formation, passive and anticausative constructions seem to substantiate a number of the claims the theory of DM espouses, most important of which is that there is no generative lexicon. The work also advances the major claim that DM and Optimality Theory can operate in a single grammar. The book is assumed to target a wide range of audience, of whom students, teachers of Arabic, typologists, and theoretical linguists are only ones.

Book excerpt: This volume brings together articles by some major figures in various linguistics domains — phonology, morphology and syntax — aiming at explaining the form of linguistic items by exploring the structures that underlie them. The book is divided in 5 parts: vowels, syllables, templates, syntax-morphology interface and Afro-Asiatic languages. Specific topics are the internal structure of vowels and its relation to harmony; the logic of recurrent vocalic patterns; syllabic prominence; the interaction of syllabic and templatic structure and segmental realization; the innateness of templates and paradigms; the limits of phonology; and various morpho-syntactic implications on phonological form. The volume renders homage to Jean Lowenstamm’s work, by underlining the importance of seeking structural and intermodular insight in the study of linguistic form.

Book excerpt: This book is intended primarily as an original contribution to the investi gation of the phonology of the two main languages spoken in Morocco. Its central topic is syllable structure. Our theoretical outlook is that of generative phonology. Most of the book deals with Tashlhiyt Berber. This language has a syllable structure with properties which are highly unusual, as seen from the vantage point of better-studied languages on which most theorizing about syllabification is based. On the one hand, complex consonant sequences are a common occurrence in the surface representations. On the other hand, syllable structure is very simple: only one distinctive feature bundle (phoneme) may occur in the onset, the nucleus or the coda. The way these two conflicting demands are reconciled is by allowing vowelless sylla bies . Any consonant may act as a syllable nucleus. When astring is syllabified, nuclear status is preferentially assigned to the segments with a higher degree of sonority than their neighbours. Consider for instance the expression below, which is a complete sentence meaning 'remove it (m) and eat it (m)': /kks=t t-ss-t=t/ [k. st. s . t:"] . k. k~t. t. s. . slt. The sentence must be pronounced voiceless throughout, as indicated by the IPA transcription between square brackets ; the syllabic parse given after the IPA transcription indicates that the sentence comprises four syllables (syllable nuclei are underlined). The differences between the dialects of Berber have to do primarily with the phonology and the lexicon.

Book excerpt: One of the interesting features in Arabic linguistics is the reference to causes and principles in the explanation of many linguistic phenomena. This scientific approach seems to have developed from the middle of the 8th century and onwards with the influence of Greek philosophy on Arabic linguistics and on other disciplines. The present book provides information on several causes and principles in Arabic morphology and phonology, with a strong focus on the words, letters and vowels. Examples, qur'anic quotations and verses are presented in both Arabic script and Roman transcription and different theories are explored. Some of the causes that are discussed are the choice of a certain letter or vowel to a form, different phonological changes such as the elision or the addition of a vowel or a letter and the likes or dislikes of certain combinations. The references to several works of linguistics from the classical period until our days elucidate many intricacies and reflect the interests of several linguists in these topics. Joyce Akesson has studied the Semitic languages at Lund's University, Sweden, and has previously been a lecturer there during many years. Beside the present book, she is the author of "A Study in Arabic Phonology" (Pallas Athena 2010), "The Basics & Intricacies of Arabic Morphology" (Pallas Athena 2010), "The Phonological Changes due to the Hamza and Weak Consonant in Arabic" (Pallas Athena 2010), "A Study of the Assimilation and Substitution in Arabic" (Pallas Athena 2010), "The Essentials of the Class of the Strong Verb in Arabic" (Pallas Athena 2010), "The Complexity of the Irregular Verbal Nominal Forms & the Phonological Changes in Arabic" (Pallas Athena Distribution 2009), "Arabic Morphology and Phonology: Based on the Marah Al-Arwah by Ahmad B. Ali B. Masud" (Studies in Semitic Languages and Linguistics, Brill Academic Publishers 2001) and "Ahmad B. 'Ali B. Mas'Ud on Arabic Morphology Marah Al-Arwah: Part 1: The Strong Verb" (Studia Orientalia Ludensia, Vol 4, Brill Academic Pub 1990). She has also published several articles about Arabic linguistics in two Journals, the Journal of Arabic Linguistics (the ZAL or Zeitschrift fur Arabische Linguistik) Wiesbaden, and the previous Acta Orientalia, Denmark. She has also written a lemma about sarf "morphology/phonology in the Encyclopaedia of Arabic Language and Linguistics, vol. 4. Leiden: Brill, 20.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines the transitive alternations in Arabic and English from a semantic point of view. The difference between English and Arabic with regard to transitive alternations manifests the poverty of English morphology compared to the richness of Arabic in this area of usage. In fact, the same form of the verb is used in English as both transitive and intransitive. The existence of several morphological forms of the Arabic verb is due to the possibility of expressing causation even with unergative stems. The theoretical framework employed in the thesis is inspired by Cognitive Grammar and the Psychomechanics of Language. Both approaches hold that meaning is in the mind rather than in the referential world or in model-theoretical constructs framed in terms of sets of referents or sets of possible worlds in which a sentence would be considered true. Psychomechanics further makes a crucial distinction between the two states in which meaning exists in the mind: in the form in which it exists before being used, it is a decontextualized potential in the position of possible cause of the variegated range of messages it can be observed to express in its various uses in discourse; in the state in which it exists when used, it is a contextualized actual in the position of effect, being deployed along with contextual and situational content to convey a particular message from among all the messages it is capable of contributing to express. This study is also firmly based on the semiological principle proposed by Duffley (2014), namely that "human language is not primarily about form, but about form-meaning pairings". Most of the previous research on causation has been exclusively syntactic, with semantics being involved only in the classification of verbal lexemes into groups that share semantic elements of meaning based on similar syntactic behavior. Our study proposes a potential meaning capable of explaining all of their uses for all of the six devices identified in the literature as causativizing or de-causativizing in Arabic, namely ablaut, gemination, prefixation by a-, ta + gemination, prefixation with ta- + lengthening of the middle vowel, and prefixation with n-. The study of the first three devices showed that causativization is not the potential meaning of these forms, but rather only one type of message among many other actual meanings conveyed when they are used in context. Our analysis also concluded that the last three forms in the list are not inherently de-causativizing either, but that the potential meanings of these forms involve reflexivization and reciprocity, notions which are opposed to the externally-oriented nature of causation, as they construe the action as remaining internal to the causer or as returning reciprocally upon the latter.
