This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quarks are the main constituents of protons and neutrons and hence are important building blocks of all the matter that surrounds us. However, quarks have the intriguing property that they never appear as isolated single particles but only in bound states. This phenomenon is called confinement and has been a central research topic of elementary particle physics for the last few decades. In order to find the mechanism that forbids the existence of free quarks many approaches and ideas are being followed, but by now it has become clear that they are not mutually exclusive but illuminate the problem from different perspectives. Two such confinement scenarios are investigated in this thesis: Firstly, the importance of Abelian field components for the low-energy regime is corroborated, thus supporting the dual superconductor picture of confinement and secondly, the influence of the Gribov horizon on non-perturbative solutions is studied.
Book Synopsis Principles Of Phase Structures In Particle Physics by : Hildegard Meyer-ortmanns
Download or read book Principles Of Phase Structures In Particle Physics written by Hildegard Meyer-ortmanns and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006-12-06 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phase structure of particle physics shows up in matter at extremely high densities and/or temperatures as they were reached in the early universe, shortly after the big bang, or in heavy-ion collisions, as they are performed nowadays in laboratory experiments. In contrast to phase transitions of condensed matter physics, the underlying fundamental theories are better known than their macroscopic manifestations in phase transitions. These theories are quantum chromodynamics for the strong interaction part and the electroweak part of the Standard Model for the electroweak interaction. It is their non-Abelian gauge structure that makes it a big challenge to predict the type of phase conversion between phases of different symmetries and different particle contents. The book is about a variety of analytical and numerical tools that are needed to study the phase structure of particle physics. To these belong convergent and asymptotic expansions in strong and weak couplings, dimensional reduction, renormalization group studies, gap equations, Monte Carlo simulations with and without fermions, finite-size and finite-mass scaling analyses, and the approach of effective actions as supplement to first-principle calculations.

This book was released on 1992-03-31 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this book review recent developments in the microscopic theory of optical and electronic semiconductor properties. Many advances in this active field are intimately related to the work of Hartmut Haug and his coworkers. At the occasion of Haug's 60th birthday, a number of current and/or former members of his research team review the current state-of-the-art. Topics include the quantum kinetics of electrons, phonons and photons, coherent optical effects, quantum transport, ballistic motion, microscopic semiconductor laser theory with special emphasis on microlasers, symmetry aspects of laser excited semiconductors, as well as a review of the two-dimensional Wigner crystal in a strong magnetic field. The articles present the material in sufficient detail to be understandable by advanced graduate students and researchers who have a good background in quantum mechanics.
Book Synopsis Confinement, Topology, and Other Non-Perturbative Aspects of QCD by : Jeff Paul Greensite
Download or read book Confinement, Topology, and Other Non-Perturbative Aspects of QCD written by Jeff Paul Greensite and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of quark confinement is one of the classic unsolved problems of particle physics and is fundamental to our understanding of the physics of the strong interaction and the behaviour of non-Abelian gauge theories in general. The confinement problem is also are area in which concepts from topology and techniques of computational physics both find important applications. This volume contains a snapshot of current research in this field as of January 2002. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of topological field configurations such as centre vortices and monopoles in proposed confinement mechanisms. Other topics covered include colour superconductivity, instantons and chiral symmetry breaking, matrix models and the construction of chiral gauge theories. Readership: Research scientists and graduate students of high energy physics and nuclear physics.
Book Synopsis Conceptual Developments of 20th Century Field Theories by : Tian Yu Cao
Download or read book Conceptual Developments of 20th Century Field Theories written by Tian Yu Cao and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-05-14 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a broad synthesis of conceptual developments of twentieth-century field theories, from the general theory of relativity to quantum field theory and gauge theory. The author gives a historico-critical exposition of the conceptual foundations of the theories revealing a pattern to the evolution of these conceptions. Theoretical physicists and students of theoretical physics will find in this book an account of the foundational problems of their discipline that will help them understand the internal logic and dynamics of their subject. In addition the book will provide professional historians and philosophers of science, and especially philosophers of physics, with a conceptual basis for further historical, cultural and sociological analysis of the theories discussed. The book also contains much material for philosophical (metaphysical, methodological and semantical) reflection. Finally, the scientifically qualified general reader will find in this book a deeper analysis of contemporary conceptions of the physical world than can be found in popular accounts of the subject.

Book Synopsis Quark-gluon Plasma And Heavy Ion Collisions: Procs Of A Meeting Held In The Framework Of The Activities Of Giselda, The Italian Working Group On Strong Interactions by : Wanda Maria Alberico
Download or read book Quark-gluon Plasma And Heavy Ion Collisions: Procs Of A Meeting Held In The Framework Of The Activities Of Giselda, The Italian Working Group On Strong Interactions written by Wanda Maria Alberico and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002-09-23 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the unique possibility of tackling the problem of hadronic deconfinement from different perspectives. After general introductions to the physical issues, from both the theoretical and the experimental point of view, the book presents the most recent expertise on field theory approaches to the QCD phase diagram, many-body techniques and applications, the dynamics of phase transitions, and phenomenological analysis of relativistic heavy ion collisions. One of the major goals of this book is to promote interchange among those fields of research, which have traditionally been cultivated by different communities of physicists. The contributions in the book help in obtaining deep comprehension of this new state of matter, a system of deconfined quarks and gluons. At the same time the book offers a few examples of how the seeds of the deconfined state are looked for in the phenomenological analysis of the observables measured in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The main topics are dealt with in a pedagogical style, suitable for beginners as well as experienced researchers.
