Le concept de métier, comme système d'offre intégré à une structure de groupe, rend compte de la cohérence de la grande entreprise. Les politiques de recentrage sont offensives ou défensives selon la nature de la contrainte financière qui s'exerce sur les groupes. Elles sont liées à un processus d'internationalisation par croissance externe. Enfin, elles s'efforcent d'intégrer des facteurs de différenciation et de diversification de l'activité. L'observation de soixante groupes industriels, et l'analyse de ratios extraits de leurs comptes consolides constituent l'étude empirique. Il en ressort une typologie des trajectoires des groupes, une mesure de l'évolution de l'entropie de leur gamme d'activités, ainsi qu'une classification statistique des groupes selon leurs caractéristiques financières. La méthodologie s'efforce de combiner des apports de la gestion financière et de l'analyse stratégique, dans une perspective d'intégration des phénomènes réels et financiers.
