Book excerpt: Mis en évidence au laboratoire de Cristallochimie et Physico-chimie du Solide de Lille à la fin des années 80, les oxydes de type BIMEVOX, qui dérivent de Bi4V2011 par substitution partielle du vanadium par un autre métal (ME), sont les meilleurs conducteurs par 02- connus à ce jour. Leurs propriétés remarquables de conductivité ionique à basses températures, a motivé leur utilisation en tant que catalyseurs d'oxydation, compte tenu du rôle primordial joué par 02- dans le mécanisme réactionnel. Dans le but d'examiner leurs propriétés catalytiques, nous avons choisi la réaction de couplage oxydant du propène. Deux catalyseurs ont été étudiés, le BICUVOX et le BICOVOX. Le test catalytique a été réalisé en utilisant un réacteur à lit fIxe. Plusieurs paramètres opératoires ont été examinés: la température, la pression partielle d'oxygène, le temps de contact et l'effet de dilution du lit catalytique. En fonction de la température de réaction, deux régimes réactionnels ont été mis en évidence: i) oxydation totale du propène à des températures relativement basses (300 - 450ʻC) ; il) dimérisation du propène en 1,5-hexadiène à des températures plus élevées (450 - 550ʻC). Les résultats ont révélé aussi que le catalyseur dopé au cobalt est plus actif que celui dopé au cuivre. Dans le souci d'interpréter les évolutions subies par les catalyseurs BIMEVOX dans les conditions du test, une caractérisation physico-chimique approfondie a été entreprise en utilisant les techniques suivantes: la diffraction des RX, la thermodésorption programmée (T'PD), l'analyse thermogravimétrique (A TG), l'Infra-Rouge (IR), la microscopie électronique à balayage (MEB) et la résonance paramagnétique électronique (RPE). Ces techniques ont révélé un phénomène de réduction progressive des catalyseurs pendant la réaction. Cette évolution favorise la dimérisation du propène dans un premier temps puis conduit à la dégradation de la structure du catalyseur lorsqu'elle est très poussée. Le traitement sous air à 600ʻC permet la régénération des catalyseurs qui retrouvent leur structure initiale. Enfin les propriétés catalytiques ont été corrélées aux résultats obtenus par la caractérisation physico-chimique.

Book excerpt: On the day after the 1959 Cambridge Congress, during which the International Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics was founded, a biophysics section was formed within the Society of Physical Chemistry (Societe de Chimie Physique). Since then, three of the Society's annual meetings (the 11th, 17th, and 23rd) were devoted exclusively to the physico-chemical study of biological systems. The first of these was held in June 1961 at a hotel in Col de Voza, at the foot of an alpine glacier above Chamonix. The second, in May 1967, took place in the more learned setting of the venerable rooms of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. The third - the one dealt with in the present volume - was recently held at Orleans-La Source in the newly built lecture theatres of the young University, which is near the great Institutes of the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), on the Sologne plateau. These three stages are milestones of an evolution which characterises (at least schematically) the explosive evolution of biological physico-chemistry. The first colloquium, with the title 'Deoxyribonucleic Acid: Structure, Synthesis and Functions', actually marks the first contact of the physical chemist with one of the then most prestigious biological macromolecules, the structure of which had just been discovered, and in this way celebrated one of the first and most striking successes of molecular biology.

Book excerpt: L'un des principaux verrous scientifique rencontré au cours du développement de catalyseurs d'oxydation bio-inspirés concerne l'étape de réduction du métal pour permettre l'activation du dioxygène. Pour essayer de lever ce verrou, nous avons développé un système macromoléculaire composé d'un polymère hydrosoluble dans lequel deux types de cofacteurs sont incorporés ; (1) des cofacteurs redox capables de collecter des électrons issus d'un réducteur en solution, et (2) des cofacteurs catalytiques capables d'activer le dioxygène. De façon à permettre l'incorporation de ces cofacteurs au sein du polymère, ce dernier a été modifié avec différents groupement chimiques qui ont étés quantifiés par RMN du proton dans l'eau. Par ailleurs, la synthèse de différents complexes métalliques, connus pour être de bons catalyseurs d'oxydation, tels que des métalloporphyrines ou des complexes mononucléaire et binucléaire de fer et de cuivre, a été réalisée. Ces catalyseurs ont d'abord été étudiés avec H2O2 dans l'eau en présence ou en absence de polymère. En parallèle, l'incorporation de la FMN par interactions électrostatiques au sein du polymère a permis de générer un système capable de collecter les électrons de NADH en solution. Cette réduction s'est avérée 4 000 fois plus rapide que la réduction sans polymère modifié. Cette réductase artificielle (FMN+ PEI modifié) a ensuite été démontrée capable de réduire très efficacement les porphyrines de manganèse (III) ainsi que d'autres complexes métalliques. Au cours de l'étude, la capacité de ce système à séparer les électrons provenant de NADH a également été mis en avant. Finalement, cette réductase artificielle a été associée à différents catalyseurs métalliques afin d'étudier leur activité sur la réaction d'oxydation du thioanisole, ou d'autres substrats, par activation réductrice du dioxygène.
