Book Synopsis Asian Growth and Foreign Capital by : J. Thomas Lindblad
Download or read book Asian Growth and Foreign Capital written by J. Thomas Lindblad and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spectacular economic development in eastern Asia at the end of last century brought international watchers to despair twice: first the growth, later the crisis. They could not explain both phenomena. This book tries to fill the gap. The authors use the term "international capital flow" as the key. They see the quick growth and the sudden crisis as sides of the same coin. With this they bridge the literature on the "Asian growth" on the one hand with the literature on the "Asian-crisis" literature on the other. J. Thomas Lindblad is lecturer in economic history and the history of SouthEast Asia at the University of Leiden.

Book Synopsis Does "good Government" Draw Foreign Capital? by :
Download or read book Does "good Government" Draw Foreign Capital? written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China is now the world's largest destination of foreign direct investment (FDI), despite assessments highlighting its institutional deficiencies. But this FDI inflow corresponds closely to predicted FDI flows into China from a model that predicts FDI inflow based on government quality indicators and controls and is estimated across a sample of other weak-institution countries. The only real discrepancy is that, if government quality is measured by constraints on executive power, China receives somewhat more FDI than the model predicts. This might reflect an underestimation of the strength of these constraints in China, a unique institutional setting for FDI operations, FDI based on expected future institutional improvements, or a unique Chinese model of development. The authors conclude that Ockham's razor disfavors the last. They also note that FDI may be elevated because Chinese institutions protect foreign firms better than domestic ones.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China is the largest recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI) among developing countries. This study compares China's FDI performance with a number of other Asian countries and focuses on the policy and institutional factors that lead to a large demand for FDI in China. The policy and institutional factors include import substitution, excess investment demand and features of China's FDI regulatory system. The study shows that there are costs associated with such a high demand for FDI, including overbidding for FDI and the associated loss of Chinese bargaining power, large import demand, and the structure of the FDI at variance with Chinese official policies. This study also briefly discusses the foreign economic policy implications of China's FDI absorption and suggests some future research possibilities.

Book Synopsis Growth Theories in Light of the East Asian Experience by : Takatoshi Ito
Download or read book Growth Theories in Light of the East Asian Experience written by Takatoshi Ito and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to this volume analyze the growth experiences of Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan in light of the recently developed endogenous growth theory to provide an understanding of the economic boom in East Asia. The theory explored in this volume attributes the phenomenal economic success of these countries to, among other factors, the role of an outward orientation—a focus on exporting rather than on protecting home markets. In addition, the importance of exchange rate behavior, of the supportive role of government policy, and of the accumulation and promotion of physical and human capital are explored in detail. This collection also examines the extent to which growth in each country became self-sustaining once it began. Demonstrating the relevance of endogenous growth theory for studying this important region, this fourth volume in the NBER-East Asia Seminar on Economics series will be of interest to observers of East Asian affairs.

Book Synopsis East Asian Development by : F. Gerard Adams
Download or read book East Asian Development written by F. Gerard Adams and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1998-10-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Asia's rapid economic growth and the crisis of 1997 have caught the world's attention. As the Asian miracle has turned to meltdown, the critical question has become whether growth will resume. Based on research and conferences at ICSEAD in Kitakyushu, Japan, this book brings together the work of Asian economic development experts. It considers the forces behind the East Asian growth miracle, the process of growth, the effect of saving, and the effect of foreign direct investment and multinationals. Taking an optimistic view, the authors conclude that rapid growth may resume in East Asia once the crisis has been resolved. The authors argue that a growth process links East Asian countries to each other and to the industrial world, and that growth reflects a process that combines capital formation and technical and institutional change. The 1997 crisis grew out of excessively rapid boom and must be handled before growth will resume. But, the authors conclude, once the crisis has been resolved, the linked process of growth supported by appropriate policies, high levels of savings and investment, and foreign investment will allow growth to resume, although perhaps with a different geographic center of gravity.

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investments in Asia written by Chalongphob Sussangkarn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-02-25 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers nine countries of ASEAN and the East Asian area, including major Asian countries, and compares their respective policies to attract Foreign Direct Investments (FDI). Through comparative study of FDI promotion policies, this book will give policy makers in the area of FDI promotion an overview and comparison of the FDI policies of other countries. In addition, researchers at graduate, post-graduate or professional level will gain from the econometric methodology and detailed definitions of various spillover effects (horizontal and vertical), which will be beneficial to their research. In addition to FDI policy comparison, this book focuses on the various spillover effects of FDI. It separates it into categories: own productivity effects; intra-industry spillover effects; and inter-industry spillover effects (forward and backward linkage effects). While most other studies have only taken econometric tests on own-productivity and intra-industry spillovers, a key advantage to this book is that it also covers the separate effects of inter-industry linkages. Through policy comparison and econometric tests on various spillover effects on economic growth, employment and exports, this book will give policy makers and researchers an innovative and constructive guide to FDI.
Book Synopsis Foreign Direct Investments in Emerging Asia by : Paul CHEUNG
Download or read book Foreign Direct Investments in Emerging Asia written by Paul CHEUNG and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign direct investments (FDI) play an integral role in the growth story of Emerging Asian economies. As an essential source of foreign capital, FDI bolsters the path to economic recovery from recessions, including the one caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This book is a collection of essays investigating the reconfiguration of FDI flows to the Emerging Asian economies of ASEAN, China and India following the pandemic and FDI policy reforms. This book broadly covers the trends in greenfield FDI flows to Emerging Asia in the context of three pertinent themes. Part I explores the rebalancing effects in global FDI flows after the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the experience of Emerging Asian economies. We also evaluate the nature of the pandemic’s impact on existing FDI linkages between China and ASEAN. Part II delves into the implications of a cross-border policy framework such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). In particular, we examine ASEAN trade activity after China's investments through BRI. We further discuss the future of BRI in ASEAN economies amid the emergence of global competitors. Part III of the book zooms in on the effectiveness of domestic FDI policy reforms. We discuss the cases of Indonesia Special Economic Zones and the Make in India initiative. This book is written for scholars, policymakers and industrial practitioners who wish to gain more knowledge on the recent FDI dynamics of Emerging Asia.
Book Synopsis Multinationals and Economic Growth in East Asia by : Shujiro Urata
Download or read book Multinationals and Economic Growth in East Asia written by Shujiro Urata and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-11-22 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing countries in East Asia recorded remarkable economic growth until the Asian financial crisis erupted in mid-1997. Although several countries experienced devastating setbacks, most of them recovered to achieve reasonable rates of economic growth over the next few years. Sound macroeconomic management, export-oriented policies, and the availability of skilled and low-wage labour are among the factors that contributed to the rapid economic growth before the crisis and the recovery thereafter. Especially noteworthy in this regard is the role played by foreign direct investment (FDI). This comprehensive book identifies the factors that contributed to the expansion of FDI inflows in East Asia and the factors that enabled recipient countries to utilize FDI effectively. It includes detailed case studies on China, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Also included is a comparative study of investing firms headquartered in the United States, Japan and Hong Kong. The authors conclude that social stability, clear and effective policy implementation and corporate governance are all key factors in reaping economic success from FDI.
Book Synopsis Asian Foreign Direct Investment in Europe by : Prana Krishna Biswas
Download or read book Asian Foreign Direct Investment in Europe written by Prana Krishna Biswas and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-07-14 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the most recent trends in Foreign Direct Investment from the major Asian economies to the EU, focusing on China and Japan’s FDIs in the EU, and Poland in particular. The authors assert that, from a European perspective, there is a strong need for further Asian FDIs into EU nations, which will establish mutual benefits. This is the first book to explore the outflow of FDI from Asian nations to other countries, especially to EU member states, whereas the extant literature focuses on the inflow of FDI to Asian nations. The authors analyse a multidimensional range of issues, covering macroeconomics, finance, technology, and examine the governments, local authorities, and institutions that support such investments. FDI has an instrumental role in the development of host countries. Large-scale capital flow becomes a vehicle for providing foreign technology, knowledge, skills, and other inputs for the integration with international marketing, production, and distribution networks and for improving the economic competitiveness of firms and economic performance of the host country. The analysis in the book is presented using statistical and econometrical approaches, emphasising a profound level of investigation, which will be particularly useful for graduate and PhD students of International Economics, Business and Trade.
