Book Synopsis North American Exploration by : John Logan Allen
Download or read book North American Exploration written by John Logan Allen and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume of North American Exploration, covering 1784 to 1914, charts a dramatic shift in the purpose, priorities, and results of the exploration of North America. As the nineteenth century opened, exploration was still fostered by the growth of empire, but by the 1830s commercial interests came to drive most exploratory ventures, particularly through the fur trade. By midcentury, however, as imperial rivalries lessened and the fur trade declined, exploration was driven by the growing scientific spirit of the age?although the science was often conducted in the service of a search for railroad routes or natural resources linked to military concerns. A clear transition took place as the spirit of the Enlightenment gave way to economic imperatives and to the science of the post-Darwinian age and exploration passed beyond discovery and geographical definition. This volume explores the resultant beginnings of an understanding of the continent and its native peoples.

Book excerpt: The Song of Hugh Glass is an epic poem about American fur traders. John G. Neihardt writes a dedicated and detailed poem about the action on the western frontier. Excerpt: "The year was eighteen hundred twenty-three. 'Twas when the guns that blustered at the Ree Had ceased to brag, and ten score martial clowns Turned from the unwhipped Aricara towns, Earning the scornful laughter of the Sioux. A withering blast the arid South still blew, And creeks ran thin beneath the glaring sky; For it was a month ere honking geese would fly Southward before the Great White Hunter's face: And many generations of their race, As bow-flung arrows, now have fallen spent."
Book Synopsis A Cycle of the West by : John G. Neihardt

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Cycle of the West is an anthology of five epic poems published over 26 years: The Song of Three Friends, The Song of Hugh Glass, The Song of Jed Smith, The Song of the Indian Wars, and The Song of the Messiah. John G. Neihardt captures the essence of the American West through the intertwining stories of various historical and mythic figures. As the cycle unfolds, the vivid imagery, rich symbolism, and lyrical verse paint a vivid portrait of pivotal moments in Western history, from the brutal survival story of Hugh Glass in The Song of Hugh Glass to the clashes between settlers and Native Americans in The Song of the Indian Wars. The Song of Three Friends introduces readers to three trappers—Joe, Fred, and Hugh—whose friendship is tested by the harsh realities of frontier life. Through their experiences, the poem explores camaraderie, survival, and the relentless pursuit of freedom amidst the untamed wilderness. The Song of Hugh Glass explores the legendary tale of the eponymous Hugh Glass, a fur trapper who survives a brutal bear attack only to be left for dead by his companions. Against all odds, Glass embarks on a journey of vengeance and redemption, embodying the indomitable spirit of the American frontier. The Song of the Indian Wars delves into the tragic conflict between Native American tribes and the encroaching forces of colonization. Neihardt portrays the complex dynamics of this struggle, highlighting the perspectives of both Native warriors and settlers as they grapple with violence, displacement, and the erosion of traditional ways of life. The Song of Jed Smith and The Song of the Messiah are not yet in the U.S. public domain, and are therefore not yet included in this edition. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book Synopsis The Splendid Wayfaring by : John G. Neihardt
Download or read book The Splendid Wayfaring written by John G. Neihardt and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1920 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the publication of The Splendid Wayfaring in 1920, John G. Neihardt sought to restore the reputation of a mountain man who went far in opening up the American West. The exciting narrative begins in 1822, when Smith ascended the Missouri River in the first fur-trading expedition of William H. Ashley and Andrew Henry, and ends in 1831, when he was killed by Comanche Indians on the Cimarron River. In the intervening years Smith became the first explorer to recognize South Pass as the gateway to the Far West, the first overlander to reach California and travel up the coast to the Columbia River, and the first white man to cross the Sierra Nevada and the Great Basin from west to east. The Splendid Wayfaring follows in novelistic detail the history-making adventures of Smith and his companions.

Book Synopsis History of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway by : Keith L. Bryant
Download or read book History of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway written by Keith L. Bryant and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 942 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1859, Cyrus K. Holliday envisioned a railroad that would run from Kansas to the Pacific, increasing the commerce and prosperity of the nation. With farsighted investors and shrewd management, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad grew from Holliday's idea into a model of the modern, rapid, and efficient railroad. There were many growing pains. Rustlers, thieves, and desperadoes were as thick as the cattle in Kansas when the first rails were laid. When a conductor, toting a pistol, asked a grizzled prospector where he was heading, the old man replied, "Hell." "That's 65_ and get off at Dodge," the weary conductor declared. Once built with rails from Wales laid on ties of oak and walnut, the railroad survived the economic and climatic hardships of the late nineteenth century, and eventually extended from Chicago to San Francisco, with over 12,000 miles of track and substantial holdings in oil fields, timber land, uranium mines, pipe lines, and real estate.
