Book excerpt: Excerpt from Artistic Creation and Cosmic Creation I too shall join the philosophers and shall try to show that our question is not how the world came into being, but what sort of a thing the world is in its ultimate and simplest nature, within which we may legitimately say that creation takes place and things are produced and events come to be and are caused. I am sure that if I say Spirit is there I cannot rest content with using this picture of the most developed thing we know, without asking how it came to be. But I know also how hard it is to avoid asking the question even if the elementary world is cor rectly conceived, and I too am beset with the pictorial habit of going outside the world as it were and asking for its author. It seems to me, therefore, useful for myself and perhaps for others to inquire first what creation is where we are familiar with it, and to use the answer to that problem to interpret what creation must mean when we speak of a creative principle in the whole world. It may be that to find the source of the world in a spirit is to make a mistaken use of the analogy of artistic or other finite creation. At any rate the first inquiry is feasible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cosmic Creation The purpose of this series of which cosmic creation forms the first monograph is to pre sent pure Aryan thoughts in a purely Aryan manner. At the same time, stress is laid upon that phase of Aryan reasoning which is best adapted to the comprehension of the Western mind. The aim of all Aryan literature has been to stimulate the student to think for himself. I have attempted to formulate the theoretical portion of philosophy, which is embodied in cosmic creation, in such a suggestive way that the reader will be eager to seek more enlighten ment for himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Creation: An Attempt to Define the Character and Trend of the Cosmic ProcessBy way of preface, I would draw attention to the limits I have imposed on myself in this attempt to grapple with the Problem of Creation, and to arrive at conclusions which may help to solve it.My argument is chiefly based on the postulate ex nihilo nihil - a postulate accepted by common sense, by science, and by most philosophy. (To certain thinkers who deny it I devote some special sections.) I take, as a master-key to the working of the cosmic process, the main principles brought to light by the evolution hypothesis - principles now accepted, not only by the vast majority of scientists and philosophers, but even by representative teachers of the Roman Catholic Church.Having vindicated these premisses, I ask what are the implications of the facts of experience when these are taken as directly as possible and in their entirety; and I contend that, if we are to be loyal to ex nihilo nihil, we must find for them an ultimate Ground which shall be at least adequate to them, however much it may transcend them; and that to this extent, at any rate, the Ground is not an Unknown or an Unconditioned. All Being and Becoming that fall within our experience must have in the Ground their Sufficient Reason, and therefore be a manifestation of the Nature of that Ground.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

There is a numerous class of intelligent persons who do not find it convenient to possess themselves of all the more important conclusions of the physical sciences by a re sort either to original memoirs or to formal scientific treatises, but who nevertheless recognize the great inter est of the developments of recent science, and would be glad to be put in a position to take a panoramic survey of its grand generalizations. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cosmic Commonwealth The Great War has revealed to us the hollowness of the materialistic civilization on which we had prided ourselves. The social order which our armies and police forces had maintained is breaking up. In many lands settled government is giving place to anarchy, and the semblance of prosperity to the reality of misery and want. Even in those which are more fortunate the turmoil is great, and there is a growing sense of insecurity and a vague foreboding of disaster. We are being borne hither and thither by swirling cross-currents of hatred, jealousy, greed, ambition and self-will. There are other currents than these - larger, deeper, saner, purer. But in this world-wide crisis the more turbulent currents have risen to the surface; and human society has become a veritable Maelstrom, strewn with the wreckage of many institutions and traditions, and threatening shipwreck to many more. No wonder that the idea of social reconstruction is in the forefront of our thoughts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Language of Creation is a commentary on the primeval stories from the book of Genesis. It is often difficult to recognize the spiritual wisdom contained in these narratives because the current scientific worldview is deeply rooted in materialism. Therefore, instead of looking at these stories through the lens of modern academic disciplines, such as sociology, psychology, or the physical sciences, this commentary attempts to interpret the Bible from its own cosmological perspective.By contemplating the ancient biblical model of the universe, The Language of Creation demonstrates why these stories are foundational to western science and civilization. It rediscovers the archaic cosmic patterns of heaven, earth, time, and space, and sees them repeated at different levels of reality. These fractal-like structures are first encountered in the narrative of creation and then in the stories of the Garden of Eden, Cain and Abel, and the flood. The same patterns are also revealed in the visions of Ezekiel, the book of Daniel, and the miracles of Moses. The final result of this contemplation is a vision of the cosmos centered on the role of human consciousness in creation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation It is familiar knowledge that the earth which we inhabit is a globe of somewhat less than 8000 miles in diameter, being one of a series of eleven which revolve at different distances around the sun, and some of which have satellites in like manner revolving around them. The sun, planets, and satellites, with the less intelligible orbs termed comets, are comprehensively called the solar system, and if we take as the uttermost bounds of this system the orbit of Uranus (though the comets actually have a wider range), we shall find that it occupies a portion of space not less than three thousand six hundred millions of miles in extent.
