Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intracranial aneurysm result from complex interactions between cerebrovascular anatomy, vascular injury, and adaptive remodeling of the arterial wall and represent a cerebrovascular disorder with the potential for substantial morbidity and mortality. Most intracranial aneurysms occur in the larger arteries near the skull base, in or around the circle of Willis, but variants may appear virtually anywhere in the cerebral vasculature. The aneurysm can leak or rupture, causing life-threatening bleeding, and is the most common cause of spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage, the third most common form of stroke. Intracranial aneurysms affect about 1 in 10,000 people per year in the United States (approximately 27,000). Intracranial Aneurysms will address the natural history, biology, and basic management principles and treatment of aneurysms. The chapters also explore the unique features of each type or location of aneurysm while considering the medical, surgical, and endovascular options. Contributions are by members of the Endovascular Neurosurgery Research Group, a group of recognized expert neurosurgeons who specialize in cerebrovascular and endovascular management of aneurysms. Comprehensively covers the basic mechanisms, history, management and treatment of intracranial aneurysms Written for researchers, residents and clinical practitioners in clinical neuroscience, neurology and neurosurgery Contains contributions by expert neurosurgeons of the Endovascular Neurosurgery Research Group

Book excerpt: This accessible textbook offers students the opportunity to explore for themselves a wide range of sociolinguistic issues relating to the French language and its role in societies around the world. It is written for undergraduate students who have a sound practical knowledge of French but who has little or no knowledge of linguistics or sociolinguistics. It combines text with practical exercises and discussion questions to stimulate readers to think for themselves and to tackle specific problems. In Part One Rodney Ball looks at the diversity of the French-speaking world and the function of French in particular countries and regions, including Switzerland, Belgium and Canada. He explores its status in relation to other languages and its role in intercommunity relations. In Part Two the focus shifts to individual language features and among topics explored are regional speech forms, the differences between written and spoken French, the `social meaning' of different styles and levels of language, and French used by immigrants. Part Three looks at recent developments in the French language particularly in France itself. Key features of this book: * Informative and comprehensive: covers a wide range of current issues * Practical: contains a variety of graded exercises and tasks plus an index of terms * Topical and contemporary: deals with current situations and provides up-to-date illustrative material * Thought-provoking: encourages students to reflect and research for themselves Rodney Ball is a lecturer in French in the School of Modern Languages, Southampton University. He teaches General Linguistics and French Sociolinguistics, on which he has published a number of articles, and is involved in designing practical courses.

Book excerpt: Watching my sister slip away into an eternal place and hearing the gratification in her voice as she transformed to the other side is what gives me peace. We walked together in that tunnel. I can’t help but wonder what if I would have remained there too. Would I have experienced the same overwhelming joy my sister felt, instead of letting the paralyzing fear take over me causing me to be left behind? What I experienced would make any individual wish that they were dead. Still I continue to hear how blessed I am to be alive. If I knew what I would be faced with when I awakened, I wonder if I would have rather remained asleep... I stopped trying to figure out why I survived and have learned to embrace the encounter I had with The God of Elijah. If you have picked up this book, The God of Elijah desires to have an encounter with you. Jesus said that no man comes to Him, except God draws them. So relax, quiet your soul, and come with me on my journey, as I reveal what happens when the miraculous shows up. Death stared me in the face; hell was hard on my heels. Up against it, I didn't know which way to turn; then I called out to GOD for help: "Please, GOD!" I cried out. "Save my life!" GOD is gracious it is he who makes things right, our most compassionate God. GOD takes the side of the helpless; when I was at the end of my rope, he saved me. I said to myself, "Relax and rest. GOD has showered you with blessings. Soul, you've been rescued from death; Eye, you've been rescued from tears; and you, Foot, were kept from stumbling." (MSG) Psalm 116: 3-8

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the intersections between neurointervention and neurology, neurointervention and neurosurgery, and neurointervention and other specialties. It fills the gap in the literature by placing specific emphasis on appropriate patient selection, preparation, and post-procedural management. Concise and comprehensive, this text covers the increasingly important aspects of the neurointerventionalist profession, as it has moved away from a purely technical role to a focus on clinical care. In addition, the most rapidly expanding area of neurointervention, ischemic stroke, is thoroughly examined in this text, where other texts on this subject fail. It is also meant as a reference for non-neurointerventionalists who may desire to learn more about how their patients can benefit from the therapeutic or adjunctive techniques that the neurointerventionalist can provide. Neurointervention in the Medical Specialties, Second Edition is an essential guide written for neurointerventional specialists from all backgrounds, both in practice and in training

Book excerpt: The Poster: Art, Advertising, Design, and Collecting, 1860sÐ1900s is a cultural history that situates the poster at the crossroads of art, design, advertising, and collecting. Though international in scope, the book focuses especially on France and England. Ruth E. Iskin argues that the avant-garde poster and the original art print played an important role in the development of a modernist language of art in the 1890s, as well as in the adaptation of art to an era of mass media. She moreover contends that this new form of visual communication fundamentally redefined relations between word and image: poster designers embedded words within the graphic, rather than using images to illustrate a text. Posters had to function as effective advertising in the hectic environment of the urban street. Even though initially commissioned as advertisements, they were soon coveted by collectors. Iskin introduces readers to the late nineteenth-century ÒiconophileÓÑa new type of collector/curator/archivist who discovered in poster collecting an ephemeral archaeology of modernity. Bridging the separation between the fields of art, design, advertising, and collecting, IskinÕs insightful study proposes that the poster played a constitutive role in the modern culture of spectacle. This stunningly illustrated book will appeal to art historians and students of visual culture, as well as social and cultural history, media, design, and advertising.
