Book excerpt: Now a major Lifetime movie event, from New York Times bestselling author and literary phenomenon V.C. Andrews (Flowers in the Attic, My Sweet Audrina) comes the fourth installment in the classic story of the Casteel family saga. Stunned by tragedy, a young woman finds herself desperate and alone, and clinging to the frailest of dreams. Can Heaven’s daughter find the inner strength to survive? The car crash that killed Heaven and Logan left Annie Casteel Stonewall orphaned and crippled. Whisked off to Farthinggale Manor by the possessive Tony Tatterton, Annie pines for her lost family, but especially for Luke, her half-brother. Friend of her childhood, her fantasy prince, her loving confidante…without the warm glow of Luke’s love, she is lost in the shadows of despair. When Annie discovers Troy’s cottage hidden in Farthinggale’s woods, the mystery of her past deepens. And even as she yearns to see Luke again, her hopes and dreams are darkened by the sinister Casteel spell…treacherous, powerful, and evil.

The practice of handmade craft has undergone a huge resurgence in recent times. This book captures the new mood—a return to the unique and the artisanal. The first part of the book profiles over seventy international artisans who represent an astonishing array of crafts. The profiles include information on what inspires each artisan and how they create their products, often in innovative or eco-conscious ways. The second part of the book consists of an invaluable directory of products, divided into categories: art, ceramics, furniture, glasswork, jewelry, lighting, metalwork, paper and woodwork, stationery, tableware, and textiles. More than 800 color photographs illustrate the huge variety of design work on offer—exquisite paper flowers, handthrown pots and jugs, beaded necklaces, folk-inspired knitted scarves, handblown chandeliers, wooden table lamps, embroideries, and more. Resources include: contact details for the artisans, recommendations of shops, websites, and blogs to visit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication celebrates the career of painter and printmaker Charles W. Bartlett (1860-1940) and provides the only complete catalogue raisonne of his known woodblock and intaglio prints which, in the past decade, have reached an international audience. It also includes a Bartlett-family memoir and an essay by Richard Miles, author of several books and many articles on Western artists who, like Bartlett, gained fame as printmakers working in Japan with the legendary Watanabe Print Shop.Born in England, Charles W. Bartlett enjoyed acclaim as a painter in London before spending several years in Asia and arriving in Honolulu in 1917, where he remained for the rest of his life. Bartlett is recognized for his depictions of China, Japan, India, and Hawaii in a variety of media. The publication surveys Bartlett's entire career beginning with his early work -- deeply human representations of harsh peasant life in Brittany and rural Holland -- and explores his fascination with Asia and Hawaii. It offers additional insights into Bartlett's considerations on humankind, the 'exoticism' of the East, and taste and patronage in Hawaii. The catalogue raisonne, compiled by lead author Jennifer Saville, curator of Western art at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, with Richard Miles, documents the extensive holdings of Bartlett prints in the collection of the Honolulu Academy of Arts, the finest such collection anywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In nineteenth-century Punjab, a cultural tug-of-war ensued as both Sufi mystics and British officials aimed to engage the local artisans as a means of realizing their ideological ambitions. When it came to influence and impact, the Sufi shrines had a huge advantage over the colonial art institutions, such as the Mayo School of Arts in Lahore. The mystically-inspired shrines, built as a statement of Muslim ruling ambitions, were better suited to the task of appealing to local art traditions. By contrast the colonial institutions, rooted in the Positivist Romanticism of the Victorian West, found assimilation to be more of a challenge. In questioning their relative success and failures at influencing local culture, the book explores the extent to which political control translates into cultural influence. Folktales, Sufi shrines, colonial architecture, institutional education methods and museum exhibitions all provide a wealth of sources for revealing the complex dynamic between the Punjabi artisans, the Sufi community and the colonial British. In this unique look at a little-explored aspect of India's history, Hussain Ahmad Khan explores this evidence in order to illuminate this web of cultural influences. Examining the Sufi-artisan relationship within the various contexts of political revolt, the decline of the Mughals and the struggle of the Sufis to establish an Islamic state, this book argues that Sufi shrines were initially constructed with the aim of affirming a distinct 'Muslim' identity. At the same time, art institutions established by colonial officials attempted to promote eclectic architecture representing the 'British Indian empire', as well as to revive the pre-colonial traditions with which they had previously seemed out of touch. This important book sheds new light on the dynamics of power and culture in the British Empire.
