Book Synopsis Signal Timing Improvement Practices by : Peter S. Parsonson
Download or read book Signal Timing Improvement Practices written by Peter S. Parsonson and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to traffic engineers, public officials, and others interested in developing improved traffic signal timing procedures. Information has been assembled on traffic signal timing software, resources required for timing, procedures for single intersections and coordinated systems, pedestrian intervals, and fine- tuning solutions. Traffic engineers need to know the comparative requirements and effectiveness of alternative traffic signal timing techniques. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes these techniques, presents the general principles for application, including source material for more detailed information, and discusses the issues associated with traffic signal timing alternatives. It should be noted that, while traffic engineers frequently use standards developed by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, the Federal Highway Administration, or other agencies in making engineering judgments, they are always well advised to protect themselves by carefully supporting the bases of their decisions with factual findings and documenting the reasons for the decisions.

Book Synopsis Cities and Their Vital Systems by : Advisory Committee on Technology and Society
Download or read book Cities and Their Vital Systems written by Advisory Committee on Technology and Society and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 1298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities and Their Vital Systems asks basic questions about the longevity, utility, and nature of urban infrastructures; analyzes how they grow, interact, and change; and asks how, when, and at what cost they should be replaced. Among the topics discussed are problems arising from increasing air travel and airport congestion; the adequacy of water supplies and waste treatment; the impact of new technologies on construction; urban real estate values; and the field of "telematics," the combination of computers and telecommunications that makes money machines and national newspapers possible.

Download or read book Methodology for Traffic Signal Timing in Oversaturated Arterial Networks written by Gye-Hyeong Ahn and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A traffic simulation model was developed to provide a methodology for traffic signal timing in oversaturated urban arterial networks. Two control objectives of traffic signal timing in oversaturated conditions were taken into consideration. One was to maximize the number of vehicles processed in an arterial network, which has an oversaturated traffic demand at the entry of the arterial street and moderate traffic demands at the entry of cross streets. The other was to prevent queue spillback or to minimize the occurrence of queue spillback if inevitable. Signal timing offset was the dominant factor affecting system performance; although, link length was also important. When link length is short, the optimum offset is approximately zero, regardless of the cycle length. As link length increases beyond the minimum 200 ft (61 m) tested, for highest efficiency, downstream intersection greens should begin before upstream intersection greens. This relationship, opposite to conventional progression greens, moves downstream queues before incoming platoon arrival. Cross street traffic operations can have significant effects upon arterial performance and system efficiency. System efficiency rapidly deteriorates when any cross street green becomes too short for the link length. Therefore, a "practical" minimum green interval for cross streets is necessary to accommodate upstream cross street through traffic and turning vehicles from the arterial. When the cross street green is shorter than the minimum, even with the best offset combination, queue spillbacks occur on the cross streets and system efficiency deteriorates.

Book Synopsis Traffic Signal Timing Models for Oversaturated Signalized Interchanges by : Youngchan Kim
Download or read book Traffic Signal Timing Models for Oversaturated Signalized Interchanges written by Youngchan Kim and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research report documents the development models for control of signalized diamond interchanges during oversaturated traffic conditions. Oversaturated traffic conditions occur when the average traffic demand exceeds the capacity of the signal system. The dynamic optimization model proposed is the principal product of this research. The control objective of the dynamic model is to provide maximum system productivity as well as minimum delay for a selected roadway system. A special feature predetermined upper limits.
