Book Synopsis The Light, The Stones and The Sacred by : Andrea Orlando
Download or read book The Light, The Stones and The Sacred written by Andrea Orlando and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-27 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses a variety of topics within the growing discipline of Archaeoastronomy, focusing especially on Archaeoastronomy in Sicily and the Mediterranean and Cultural Astronomy. A further priority is discussion of the astronomical and statistical methods used today to ascertain the degree of reliability of the chronological and cultural definition of sites and artifacts of archaeoastronomical interest. The contributions were all delivered at the XVth Congress of the Italian Society of Archaeoastronomy (SIA), held under the rubric "The Light, the Stones and the Sacred" – a theme inspired by the International Year of Light 2015, organized by UNESCO. The full meaning of many ancient monuments can only be understood by examining their relation to light, given the effects that light radiation produces in “interacting” with lithic structures. Moreover, in addition to manifestations of the sacred through the medium of light (hierophanies), there are many ties between temples, tombs, megalithic structures, and the architecture of almost all ages and cultures and our star, the Sun. Readers will find the book to be a source of fascinating insights based on synergies between the disciplines of archaeology and astronomy.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Prehistoric Figurines by : Timothy Insoll
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Prehistoric Figurines written by Timothy Insoll and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-13 with total page 961 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Figurines dating from prehistory have been found across the world but have never before been considered globally. The Oxford Handbook of Prehistoric Figurines is the first book to offer a comparative survey of this kind, bringing together approaches from across the landscape of contemporary research into a definitive resource in the field. The volume is comprehensive, authoritative, and accessible, with dedicated and fully illustrated chapters covering figurines from the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australasia and the Pacific laid out by geographical location and written by the foremost scholars in figurine studies; wherever prehistoric figurines are found they have been expertly described and examined in relation to their subject matter, form, function, context, chronology, meaning, and interpretation. Specific themes that are discussed by contributors include, for example, theories of figurine interpretation, meaning in processes and contexts of figurine production, use, destruction and disposal, and the cognitive and social implications of representation. Chronologically, the coverage ranges from the Middle Palaeolithic through to areas and periods where an absence of historical sources renders figurines 'prehistoric' even though they might have been produced in the mid-2nd millennium AD, as in parts of sub-Saharan Africa. The result is a synthesis of invaluable insights into past thinking on the human body, gender, identity, and how the figurines might have been used, either practically, ritually, or even playfully.

Book Synopsis Punctuated Insularity by : Gary S. Webster
Download or read book Punctuated Insularity written by Gary S. Webster and published by BAR International Series. This book was released on 2017 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sardinia preserves an exceptional record of its Final Neolithic and Copper Age cultures, with a diverse crafts repertory, henges and dolmens, statue-menhirs, chamber tombs - and the only known ziggurat in Europe. The present study provides a synthesis in English for a scholarly readership interested in Mediterranean adaptations during this earliest period of metallurgy. As elsewhere, the infusion of metallurgy had profound implications, as island cultures underwent a series of transformations tied directly or indirectly to it. Spanning two millennia, these changes are studied in terms of material cultures known as Ozieri, Sub-Ozieri, Filigosa-Abealzu, Monte Claro and Bell Beaker. A more overarching finding from this review is the periodic engagement between these cultures and geographically distant ones. Such punctuations of the insular condition had long-lasting effects on local expression, and some thoughts on how this might contribute to understandings of concepts like identity formation are presented by way of a conclusion.

Book Synopsis Sardinian and Aegean Chronology by : Miriam S. Balmuth
Download or read book Sardinian and Aegean Chronology written by Miriam S. Balmuth and published by Oxbow Books Limited. This book was released on 1998 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Balanced between the Aegean and West Mediterranean worlds, Sardinia offers a perfect laboratory for the investigation of interaction between societies from the Palaeolithic to Roman period. This work has, however, been hampered in the past by incompatible chronologies, so the 46 papers in this volume (originated at an international congress held at Tufts University in 1995) form an important stepping stone for future research. Twelve papers in Italian take a stylistic approach, using architecture, sculpture and (for the Chalcolithic). The English-language papers discuss radiocarbon dating, dendrochronology, obsidian and other scientific approaches to dating. As the title of the book suggests, Aegean chronologies benefit as much as the West Mediterranean from the results presented here.
