After he meets the skateboarding painter, Alexander DeVinci, they're yanked into another realm by a magical painting. Their own world is very different than Artania: a world with living paintings and sculptures. Soon, they learn that Artania is on the verge of destruction, and only Bartholomew's art can save it. With powerful new friends by his side, Bartholomew braves battles, duels and skateboarding escapes. But even with his growing powers, can he defeat the evil Sickhert's army and bring art back to the world? If they're lucky, they go to Star Factory 13 to become glorious stars in the sky... after they pass a rigorous personality test given by Carelia the Light Goddess, that is. But how in the world did 10-year-old Alicia end up in Star Factory 13? All she did was go shopping with her Mother to buy a new lamp for her bedroom. Could there really have been some magic in that department store Christmas tree - or perhaps it was the ride in the elevator with the Golden Door that did it. The elevator button said "Press Me" and Alicia willingly obliged. Up she rode to the 13th floor to find an assortment of wise-cracking light bulb people, all with distinct personalities, each coming from sad, silly or desperate circumstance, all hoping to take their rightful place in the heavens. Alicia and the Light Bulb People is an enchanting tale of friendship, courage, and realizing your star potential through the magic of believing.

Book excerpt: My name is Joy, Joy Chappell. Over the top, I know, but my Mom wanted me to sound all innocent. And maybe I was, in my own way. Can a car stealing, pot smoking, LSD tripping chick be innocent? I thought so. Even though it was always on my mind. It, the thing we never talked about. It that Mom hid with Cover Girl and I lied to my friends about. It, making me dream that someday the light of hippie sun would shine down as we danced barefoot in meadows. Naïve, I know. But when you're a kid you see the world through your own eyes. And when you're high to boot, everything is tinged with a soft mist, like an out of focus camera, and you trust people, thinking they just want to give you a ride. Even with It, I never knew people were truly ugly until that night. I really thought the face inside was just a mask, one I could melt away with my Kodachrome soul. But I was wrong. And by the time I figured it out, it was too late. I was seventeen, and I was about to die.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DNA genealogy is a new field of science which considers patterns of mutations, which are different in different human lineages, in the DNA of present-day humans and of our ancient ancestors. Since the DNA is often preserved in ancient excavated bones, including those in archaeological burials, and can be recovered and studied, this approach allows us to compare the mutation patterns in the course of centuries and millennia. This in turn provides us with a knowledge of how often the mutations occur, that they are gradually changed over centuries and millennia, and, hence, calibrate the rate of mutations in various sites of the DNA in terms of time. In other words, it gives us a “molecular tool” aiming at establishing chronology of events along the ancient history of the humankind. Since the DNA is a molecule, DNA genealogy is also called the “Molecular History”. This is a subject of this book. The book begins with an explanation of what is a nature of mutations in the DNA, why the mutations are random, how to measure their rates, in terms of how many mutations occur in the DNA over centuries and millennia, therefore, to calculate their mutation rate constants. This first part of the book provides the reader with many examples of how DNA genealogy employs the mutation rates to uncover hidden puzzles of ancient human history, such as when Homo sapiens first appeared, who were ancient Europeans, Asians, Africans, Americans compared with their present-day descendants in terms of their DNA lineages, and introduces a rather simple calculator which everyone can run on their personal computer devices, iPhones, etc. to conduct such calculations of ancient chronology. Subsequent chapters of the book consider such controversial issues as whether early people came “out of Africa” or “into Africa” (both hypotheses have their supporters among scientists), who were the ancient Aryans and why their language obtained – much later – a name “Indo-European”, where was a homeland of a majority of nowadays Europeans and Native Americans (a hint – South Siberia), who were ancient Jews and Arabs and when their actual common ancestor lived, what DNA was revealed from a few Khazar burials, why look-alike ancient ceramics, made many thousand years ago, was found both in Europe and Asia, how ancient and contemporary languages are connected with the DNA of people, both ancient and contemporary. The book is targeted for multidisciplinary scientists as well as students and advanced general readership.
