Book Synopsis The Early Modern Italian Domestic Interior, 1400–1700 by : Erin J. Campbell
Download or read book The Early Modern Italian Domestic Interior, 1400–1700 written by Erin J. Campbell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasizing on the one hand the reconstruction of the material culture of specific residences, and on the other, the way in which particular domestic objects reflect, shape, and mediate family values and relationships within the home, this volume offers a distinct contribution to research on the early modern Italian domestic interior. Though the essays mainly take an art historical approach, the book is interdisciplinary in that it considers the social implications of domestic objects for family members of different genders, age, and rank, as well as for visitors to the home. By adopting a broad chronological framework that encompasses both Renaissance and Baroque Italy, and by expanding the regional scope beyond Florence and Venice to include domestic interiors from less studied centers such as Urbino, Ferrara, and Bologna, this collection offers genuinely new perspectives on the home in early modern Italy.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The collection of Italian medieval sculpture in The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Cloisters began with the acquisition in 1908 of a Romanesque column statue; today the Museum's holdings comprise more than seventy works dating from the ninth to the late fifteenth century ... The birthplaces of these works range from Sicily to Venice; some typify local styles, others illustrate the intense artistic exchanges taking place within Italy and between Italy and the wider world ... Technological advances of the last decades have made it possible to determine more precisely the materials and techniques from which works of art are made, the history of their alteration, and the mechanisms of their deterioration. Using such techniques, scholars have been able to ascertain, for example, that sculptures previously thought to be modern works carved in the medieval manner were in fact completely authentic. This innovative volume represents a watershed in the study of sculpture: a collaborative dialogue between an art historian and a conservator—between art history and art science—that deepens our understanding of the object we see, while illuminating its elusive, enigmatic history"--From publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents one of the very first detailed and comprehensive historical treatises on globes terrestrial and celestial in English language since the numerous works published before its appearance tended to give only a very general consideration to the uses of globes, including a reference to their important structural features, and to the problems geographical and astronomical in the solution of which they may be counted of service. The aim of this study was to treat the subject historically, beginning with the earliest references to the belief in a spherical earth and a spherical firmament encircling it, and it was inspired by the author's hope that the preliminary study may lead to a number of independent and thorough investigations of important individual examples, to the end of clearly setting forth their great documentary value._x000D_ Volume 1:_x000D_ Terrestrial Globes in Antiquity_x000D_ Celestial Globes in Antiquity_x000D_ Globes Constructed by the Arabs_x000D_ Terrestrial and Celestial Globes in the Christian Middle Ages_x000D_ Globes Constructed in the Early Years of the Great Geographical Discoveries_x000D_ Globes of the Early Sixteenth Century_x000D_ Globes of the Second Quarter of the Sixteenth Century_x000D_ Globes and Globe Makers of the Third Quarter of the Sixteenth Century_x000D_ Globes and Globe Makers of the Last Quarter of the Sixteenth Century_x000D_ Volume 2:_x000D_ Globes and Globe Makers of the Early Seventeenth Century. Book Synopsis Sofonisba's Lesson by : Michael W. Cole
Download or read book Sofonisba's Lesson written by Michael W. Cole and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Within a span of seven or eight years in the 1550s, the Italian painter Sofonisba Anguissola produced more self-portraits than any known painter before her had in a lifetime. She was the first known artist in history to take her parents and siblings as primary subject matter, and may have painted the first group portrait featuring only women. Cole examines Sofonisba's paintings as expressions of her relationships and networks, looking at why Sofonisba was able to become a great woman artist: at her father, who decided to allow her to be educated as a painter; at her teacher, Bernardino Campi; and at her relationships with her students, sisters, and patrons, who included the Queen of Spain. Cole demonstrates that Sofonisba made teaching and education a central theme of her painting. The book also provides the first complete catalogue of all of Sofonisba's known works"--

Book Synopsis Italian Renaissance Ceramics by : British Museum
Download or read book Italian Renaissance Ceramics written by British Museum and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A superb catalogue of the British Museum collection of maiolica and other Italian Renaissance pottery, published in two volumes with a slipcase, ribbon and cloth binding. The British Museum collection of Italian Renaissance ceramics is one of the most important and most comprehensive anywhere in the world. Apart from containing many works of great artistic beauty, it is unequalled for its high proportion of signed, marked, dated and armorial pieces, crucial for scholarly study of the subject. This is the first systematic catalogue of the collection. The 495 detailed entries cover the period from 1400 to 1700 and include maiolica, incised slipware and the rare 'Medici porcelain' made in the ground-breaking Granducal workshop in Florence in the late 16th century. Every item is illustrated at least once, and most twice, in colour. Particular attention is given to patronage (the collection includes works made for such eminent patrons as Pope Leo X and Isabella d'Este), to the relationship with painting and other arts, and to the history of collecting and the role of the British Museum collection in developing the international study of the subject. The catalogue entries incorporate the results of a long programme of scientific analysis of the clays used by Renaissance potters. The book will also contain the fullest bibliography of the subject ever published.
