Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to gain a clearer understanding of the effects that art therapy treatment has on perceptions of loss and self-image with a population of "at-risk" adolescent males. This investigation was carried out in an alternative school for children that had exhausted other public education opportunities. This study involved comparing qualitative interviews conducted with both a treatment group and a non-treatment group upon completion of three months of individual art therapy with the author. Self-image of all participants was assessed at the end of the treatment period using a quantitative scale specifically designed to measure many aspects of self esteem in adolescents. Interviews were analyzed and consistent themes were generated using Grounded Theory of qualitative data analysis. The author had many roles in this research including principal investigator, therapist, alternative school staff member, assessor, and data analyzer. The discussion section of this dissertation suggests possible themes and the ways in which we might learn from these participants and their experiences. Results suggest no differences in self-image or perceptions of loss between treatment group and non-treatment group. Themes that emerged focused around the following: participants viewed themselves as "bad" kids for having been transferred to an alternative school, treatment group participants enjoyed having the opportunity to participate in art therapy, dynamics of the alternative school create both benefits and drawbacks for participants and interview may not be the best means of gathering data from this population. Future investigations along with the possible shortcomings of this research are presented based on the findings of this study.

Book excerpt: This study attempts to explore the use of body art in art therapy with adolescent boys in residential treatment to increase engagement and self-expression. This theoretical research is based on my work as an art therapy intern at a residential facility for young people in Evanston, Illinois. In my work with adolescent boys, I witnessed their natural proclivity to use their bodies as a way to express their identity: their physical posturing, clothing and accessories, body movement and gesture, as well as their use of self-adhesive tattoos and writing or drawing on their arms and hands were all a means of self-expression for them. For the purposes of this paper, body art is defined as body painting, image transfers, projected images, body casting, and body adornment. The research for this thesis includes a historical and sociocultural overview of body art, its therapeutic applications, and interviews with art therapists who have worked with adolescent males in residential treatment about their experiences and application of body art both in their personal and professional practice. Research results indicated a greater modern-day acceptance of the use of body art, a lack of art therapy literature relating to the use of body art in art therapy practice, and a need to expand the definition of body art to include various impermanent forms and material types. This thesis proposes a framework for the application of impermanent body art interventions in art therapy with adolescent males in residential treatment. The framework emphasizes: 1) the need for a clear definition of body art delineating inclusion and exclusion of specific materials and processes, 2) clear intentions and rational behind the application of body art with adolescent boys in residential treatment, and 3) an examination of the potential benefits and risks of using body art with this population in order to make informed choices regarding process and materials.

Book excerpt: The intention of this capstone thesis was to develop, promote, and implement an art therapy program within my school district as an intervention for at-risk students and incorporate it into the structure of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). The integrative description of this capstone method development specifically highlighted how PBIS and Art therapy have been incorporated at an Urban High School in Southern California to address the increasingly growing number of at-risk students within this traditional public educational setting. At-risk behaviors in youth have been determined as signs of individual and familial distress by many researchers. With that framework in mind, my capstone project review of an ongoing implementation of PBIS in this urban high school included detailed art therapy applications that addressed themes of accountability, communication, collaboration, motivation, skill development, and goal setting for small groups of high school students, grades 9-12. As there is growing but limited data on PBIS as it applies to high school settings and very limited school art therapy programs with at-risk high school students, this work was intended to promote and to inform the district's teachers, administrators, community members, and policymakers of the potential of utilizing school-integrated art therapy as an intervention option.
