Book Synopsis The Power of Witnessing by : Clare Beardsley
Download or read book The Power of Witnessing written by Clare Beardsley and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is evidence of the value of the therapist bearing witness to the client in therapeutic trauma work. Bearing witness empowers the client, creates space for their story to be heard and acknowledged, and invites change in the therapeutic relationship. In traditional psychotherapy, bearing witness is a two-way process between client and therapist. In art therapy the act of bearing witness is threefold because of the triadic relationship between art therapist, client, and artwork. This triad offers more opportunities to express, reflect, and bring awareness of the client's emotional state of being and the impact of past experiences. Ultimately witnessing within the triadic relationship creates an environment for the client that offers recognition, containment, and compassion. Art therapy has also been researched as an effective treatment of trauma, which makes this modality ideal for working with trauma survivors. An art therapy intern's experience of working at a trauma-informed agency and her experience of bearing witness and being witnessed as an art therapist in a triadic relationship is shared through an in-depth case study.

Download or read book Art on Trial written by David E. Gussak and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A man kidnaps his two children, murders one, and attempts to kill the other. The prosecution seeks the death penalty, while the defense employs an unusual strategy to avoid the sentence. The defendant's attorneys turn to more than 100 examples of his artwork, created over many years, to determine whether he was mentally ill at the time he committed the crimes. Detailing an outstanding example of the use of forensic art therapy in a capital murder case, David Gussak, an art therapist contracted by the defense to analyze the images that were to be presented as evidence, recounts his findings and his testimony in court, as well as the future implications of his work for criminal proceedings. Gussak describes the role of the art therapist as an expert witness in a murder case, the way to use art as evidence, and the conclusions and assessments that professionals can draw from a defendant's artworks. He examines the effectiveness of expert testimony as communicated by the prosecution, defense, and court, and weighs the moral, ethical, and legal consequences of relying on such evidence. For professionals and general readers, this gripping volume presents a convincing account of the ability of art to reflect a damaged and dangerous psyche. A leading text on an emerging field, Art on Trial demonstrates the practical applications of an innovative approach to clinical assessment and treatment.

The material presented serves as a primer for professionals that may present in court on behalf of a client. Ethical issues inherent in the forensic arena, as well as the use of novel scientific evidence in the form of drawings, legal proceedings, testimonials, and practical tips and strategies for effective witnessing, are shared. Research regarding a forensic art therapy investigative interview process, the Common Interview Guideline, examines the facilitative factor associated with the effect of drawing. When utilized as a primary resource within investigative interviews, drawing has the potential to offer support, promote empowerment and enhance disclosure. Understanding how drawing functions in investigative interviews and what it offers for the child, the team and the process contributes to on-going research and best practice. The text serves as a resource and a handbook for students and professionals that investigate, interview, testify and intervene on behalf of child victims and witnesses from the domains of child protection, law enforcement, prosecution, the judiciary, creative arts therapies, social work and allied practitioners in medicine and mental health.
Book Synopsis Bearing Witness to Trauma by : Steven L. Frazier
Download or read book Bearing Witness to Trauma written by Steven L. Frazier and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation project, comprised of an artist book and contextual essay, investigated the use of therapist-made art as an intersubjective tool in cross-cultural treatment of severely traumatized refugees and clients from the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Latin America. The focal subject of the investigation was a hermeneutic inquiry into howtherapist-made art aided the formation of a deeply empathic, intersubjective space between therapist and client. In addition to facilitating attunement and understanding, the researcher’s art served as a proxy witness to the clients’ cultural and emotional experiences in relationship to their traumatization. As verified by the clients in clinical interviews, the contemplative sharing of therapist-made artwork created a visual empathic dialogue that supplemented and, in some instances, replaced verbal therapeutic dialogue. The outcomes of this study demonstrate a paradigmatic shift from typical uses of therapist art to process the therapist’s experiences with clients to the application of therapist art as an intervention that may facilitate a healing intersubjective space between clients and therapist. Keywords: art therapy, trauma, intersubjectivity, cross-cultural, refugees, therapist-made art, visual dialogue, context of trauma

It is indeed "an extraordinary array of papers", as Pallaro puts it, and an immensely rich, moving and highly readable sweep through the landscapes of Authentic Movement, "this form of creative expression, meditative discipline and/or psychotherapeutic endeavour". You don't need to practice Authentic Movement to get a lot out of this book, but it certainly helps! I defy anyone to read the first two sections and not be curious to have their own experience.' - Sesame Institute 'Authentic Movement can be seen as a means by which analysts can become more sensitive to unconscious, especially pre-verbal aspects of themselves and their patients.' - Body Psychotherapy Journal Newsletter 'This book is a collection of articles, some of which are interviews, brought together for the first time. It is very valuable to have them all together in one place...It is a wonderful collection of articles on topics you have always wanted to read, such as the role of transference in dance therapy or Jung and dance therapy. The book also includes scripts for exercises.' - Somatics Authentic Movement, an exploration of the unconscious through movement, was largely defined by the work of Mary Starks Whitehouse, Janet Adler and Joan Chodorow. The basic concepts of Authentic Movement are expressed for the first time in one volume through interviews and conversations with these important figures, and their key papers. They emphasize the importance of movement as a means of communication, particularly unconscious or 'authentic' movement, emerging when the individual has a deep, self-sensing awareness - an attitude of 'inner listening'. Such movement can trigger powerful images, feelings and kinesthetic sensations arising from the depths of our stored childhood memories or connecting our inner selves to the transcendent. In exploring Authentic Movement these questions are asked: - How does authentic movement differ from other forms of dance and movement therapy? - How may 'authentic' movement be experienced?

Book Synopsis RE-ENCHANTING ART THERAPY by : Lynn Kapitan
Download or read book RE-ENCHANTING ART THERAPY written by Lynn Kapitan and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Re-Enchanting Art Therapy is written for art therapists, supervisors, students, and colleagues in related fields who seek to approach their work as a living, artistic practice but struggle to do so in the often toxic work environments where art therapy is most needed. Asking “What kills creative vitality?” research uncovered core images that art therapists associate with toxic work and the elements of re-enchantment. Author Lynn Kapitan relates, in stories and images of art therapists, how re-enchantment is a cycling process that requires an unambivalent relationship with creative power. Chapter One uses the myth of the dragon to tell stories of art therapists awakening creative energy in a constantly changing, postmodern world. Chapter Two explores transformation in the symbol of the begging bowl held out to accept whatever is placed within as the materials for creative renewal. Using the research method of “collaborative witness,” Chapter Three offers transformative stories of several disenchanted art therapists who discover their disconnection from the primordial source of their creativity in the imagery of water. A community intervention in Chapter Four, the “Reflective Circle of Peers,” presents issues and methods that art therapists use to transform their practices. In Chapter Five, Lynn Kapitan addresses fears and yearning in the toxic work environment, where such practices as playing with wolves and painting in the crossroads teach her the values of the threshold space and the fierce hearted embrace of her creativity. Re-Enchanting Art Therapy challenges art therapists to transform the practice of art therapy with creative vitality.

Book Synopsis A Meaning-Based Approach to Art Therapy by : Elizabeth Hadara Hlavek
Download or read book A Meaning-Based Approach to Art Therapy written by Elizabeth Hadara Hlavek and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-22 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Meaning-Based Approach to Art Therapy contextualizes the phenomena of Holocaust artwork for the field of art therapy and uses this canon of artwork to support the inclusion of logotherapy into art therapy theory and practice. The author expounds on a study in which she interviewed surviving Holocaust artists about how they were able to create their artworks while in Nazi captivity. Divided into three parts, the book follows the chronological order of her inquiry. It first presents theory, then research, and ends with implications for the practice of art therapy. The research chapters set out the process and results of the author's phenomenological inquiry. They address how art making during the Holocaust allowed captive artists to bear witness, leave a legacy and retain their humanity. In the final part, the author reveals how art therapists can use concepts from her study to support the progress of their clients. She advocates for the application of logotherapy, an existential philosophy that emphasizes finding meaning to facilitate healing and personal growth. Practicing art therapists and students of art therapy will find this book to be an excellent resource on logotherapy, an updated perspective on existentialism, and a contemporary examination of phenomenology.

Book excerpt: Bearing Witness to Trauma: An Intersubjective Approach to Cross-Cultural Art Therapy for Trauma is the result of my doctoral research in which I investigated the use of therapist-made art as an intersubjective tool in cross-cultural treatment of severely traumatized refugees and clients from the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Latin America. The focal subject of the investigation was a hermeneutic inquiry into how therapist-made art aided the formation of a deeply empathic, intersubjective space between therapist and client. As verified by the clients in clinical interviews, the contemplative sharing of therapist-made artwork created a visual empathic dialogue that supplemented and, in some instances, replaced verbal therapeutic dialogue. The outcomes reflected in this book demonstrate a paradigmatic shift from typical uses of therapist art to process the therapist's experiences with clients to the application of therapist art as an intervention that may facilitate a healing intersubjective space between clients and therapist.
