Book excerpt: Rarely has a subject been served by a book of this stature. Five years in the making, it covers all aspects of Art Nouveau in France in 624 authoritative pages and 740 illustrations. Arwas traces the evolution of the movement as it developed, primarily in Nancy and Paris, with the help of carefully chosen illustrations, many never published before. Ranging from the 1900 Paris exhibition to paintings, graphics and posters and such collecting fields as furniture, jewellery, ceramics, book bindings and sculpture, the informative, witty text ranges over architecture, haute couture, and the role of women in Art Nouveau with a particular look at such theatrical icons as Sarah Bernhardt, Loïe Fuller and the Grandes Horizontales. Destined to become the standard book on the subject, both content and design will appeal widely to the connoisseur, the specialist and the collector, as well as to the novice who will be introduced to the magical wonders of the style.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accoutrement Belt Plates: Exposed is a reprint of a catalog of fake belt buckles, allegedly created by the famed Tiffany & Co., that is believed to have first appeared sometime during the late 1970 ́s or early 1980 ́s. The original book was designed for one purpose - to deceive and confuse naïve collectors who were purchasing fake Tiffany & Co. brass and bronze belt buckles with a passion. These buckles appear to have been imported from England, in great quantities, as part of one of the greatest hoaxes ever perpetrated upon the American antiquities market. Accoutrement Belt Plates contains photographs of most of the bogus buckles (and buttons) that were created. Buckles are identified by name and an esoteric cataloging number has been assigned to each - most likely as part of an attempt to make these buckles appear as genuine antiques. Disturbingly, many modern collectors of these buckles still believe that they date back to the 1800¿s. Since their first appearance, these fantasy items have fetched outlandish prices in flea markets, gun shows, and swap meets across America. None of these buckles; however, were made until the 1960 ́s, at the very earliest. As to be expected, the company credited with originally printing this book, ¿Tiffany & Co. of London, England,¿ never existed - the real Tiffany & Co. is based out of New York. This new edition is presented in an attempt to halt the bogus belt buckle scam and the seemingly never ending promotion of them as genuine antiques. A preface has been added to provide readers with a bit of background on the buckle scam, photographs of some of the buckles mentioned but not contained in the original are presented for the first time, and the book is now fully indexed. While the original edition was part of a well planned scheme, it has been reproduced here to provide collectors with one important tool: it remains the only known record that lists most (but not all) of the bogus buckles and is therefore, valuable to those with an interest in them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive history of women designers working internationally from 1900 to the present day. Women designers have created some of the most important objects in history. By revealing the untold stories of female design pioneers, this wide-ranging introduction celebrates their crucial role in the history of modern processes of making. Arranged chronologically, this guide considers the structural barriers to professional success and how women overcame these hurdles, charting the works of designers including Anni Albers at the Bauhaus, the architects Eileen Gray and Zaha Hadid, interior decorator Elsie de Wolfe, and fashion icon Mary Quant. Focusing on the key subjects of architecture, craft, fashion, furniture, graphics, interior, product, and textile design, author Anne Massey explores the link between early twentieth– century revolutionary design and lifestyle, as well as the idea of shopping and consumerism as liberatory. Massey also discusses the important contribution of designers during and after World War II, along with design activism, design collectives, and the current success of women working transnationally in architecture and design. Illustrated throughout, Women in Design is the definitive history of women designers working around the world over the past 120 years.

Book excerpt: This critical survey of the Art Nouveau movement reveals the diversity of this style across the breadth of the European continent. With the inclusion of Eastern Europe and the full range of artistic media, the book shows how this movement changed the face of European art and design from Paris to Prague. Clearly structured by country, it traces the emergence of Art Nouveau, highlighting the particular interpretations of the style in each country. Countries covered include: Belgium; Spain; Britain; Austria; Hungary; and Russia. Each chapter contains sections on political and cultural contexts, specific visual characteristics and key artists and designers. It analyzes the contribution of both well-known artists and designers such as Gaudi; Van de Velde; Mackintosh; and Mucha, and brings to light many others whose contributions have been largely inaccessible. With a bibliography and glossary, this text should provide a useful introduction to this subject.
