This book was released on 2015-03-25 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1944, Lyonel Feininger (1871–1956) wrote his first letter to fellow painter Mark Tobey (1890–1976) after seeing Tobey's first solo show at the Willard Gallery in New York. It was the beginning of a close friendship that lasted until Feininger's death in 1956. More than eighty letters document the friendship of these two artists. First published in their entirety in 1991, the letters are presented here in complete transcriptions. This revised e-book edition, originally released in commemoration of the fiftieth and thirtieth anniversaries of the artists' deaths, includes an essay by Peter Selz, an expanded chronology focusing on the years of the correspondence, and color plates of paintings by both artists, as well as reproductions of selected letters. It also includes two brief catalogue essays written by each artist about the other.

Book Synopsis Australian Women in Advertising in the Twentieth Century by : J. Dickenson
Download or read book Australian Women in Advertising in the Twentieth Century written by J. Dickenson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When did Australian women first enter the advertising industry? The stereotypical advertising executive might be a pony-tailed, Ferrari-driving, young-ish man, but women have worked in Australian advertising agencies from the first years of the modern industry, and today they comprise half of the industry's workforce. Australian Women in Advertising in the Twentieth Century rescues these women from their obscurity. By employing a broader definition of advertising than usual, this study reveals the important role women have played in the development of the Australian advertising industry, sheds light on women's struggle to reach the higher echelons of the industry, and considers why the popular image of the advertising executive is at such variance from the reality. The experiences of these remarkable women across a century of Australian advertising provide valuable information on the role of gender in the development of this ubiquitous industry, as well as the encroachment of consumer culture.

Download or read book Society of Six written by Nancy Boas and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six plein-air painters in Oakland, California, joined together in 1917 to form an association that lasted nearly fifteen years. The Society of Six—Selden Connor Gile, Maurice Logan, William H. Clapp, August F. Gay, Bernard von Eichman, and Louis Siegriest—created a color-centered modernist idiom that shocked establishment tastes but remains the most advanced painting of its era in Northern California. Nancy Boas's well-informed and sumptuously illustrated chronicle recognizes the importance of these six painters in the history of American Post-Impressionism. The Six found themselves in the position of an avant garde not because they set out to reject conventionality, but because they aspired to create their own indigenous modernism. While the artists were considered outsiders in their time, their work is now recognized as part of the vital and enduring lineage of American art. Depression hardship ended the Six's ascendancy, but their painterliness, use of color, and deep alliance with the land and the light became a beacon for postwar Northern California modern painters such as Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud. Combining biography and critical analysis, Nancy Boas offers a fitting tribute to the lives and exhilarating painting of the Society of Six.
Download or read book Paul Klee written by Sabine Rewald and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1988 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The German painter Paul Klee (1879-1940) has become one of today's most popular artists. Ninety works by Klee--including drawings, watercolors, and oils, either serious, comical, capricious, or dramatic--have recently been given to the Metropolitan Museum of Art by one of the postwar era's leading art dealers and collectors, Heinz Berggruen, and are now published together in this volume for the first time. The works in the distinguished Berggruen Klee Collection, now a permanent part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's holdings, span the career of the artist from his student days in Bern in the 1890s to his death in Muralto-Locarno in 1940. All aspects of Klee both as a draftsman and as a painter are illustrated in these ninety works. Paul Klee is not only one of today's most popular artists, but he is also one of the most written about. In an illuminating addition to the vast literature on Klee, Sabine Rewald opens this study with a candid interview with the artist's only son, Felix, which took place in Bern in February 1986. Accompanied by documentary and informal photographs of the Klee family, it gives pointed and witty insights into the artist's private life. It also offers a behind-the-scenes view of the Bauhaus, where Paul Klee taught and where Felix Klee was a student. Most of the ninety works in the Berggruen Klee Collection are reproduced in full-page colorplates, and each one is accompanied by an extensive entry. These entries incorporate biographical information and quotations from Klee's letters, the latter as yet unpublished in English. The book includes an extensive chronology and a bibliography." -- Provided by publisher
