Book excerpt: There’s no such thing as a typical day at Helping Paws Animal Shelter, and this wasn’t the first time I’ve had a soggy box waiting for me on the doorstep with a disgruntled cat inside. However, this was the first time the cat talked to me. What did the barista put in my coffee? Persephone insists she’s been catnapped, and she’s witnessed an art heist. There’s a huge reward for the safe return of the painting, and that money could go a long way to helping all our animals find their forever homes. Now I have to convince the gallery owner and her associates—including the suspicious but adorable Henry the Hottie—that I can find the priceless painting. I don’t know a thing about art, but here I am, at an exhibit opening, wearing a dress called Lucky and co-conspiring with a talking cat. Typical days? They’re a thing of the past, especially if Persephone and I can crack the case and catch the thief.

Persephone and I are off to Seattle to solve the crime, but things are much different behind the scenes. Have the cast and crew been working on a recipe for deception, or was it a contestant with a case of sour grapes who’s brought production to a halt? And Chloe isn’t talking to my talking cat. Whatever I do, I have to keep my inner fangirl in check, or my favorite show could get eliminated for good.

Rosamund wants us to check out her ex and an old high school frenemy who’s become a witch. But Rosamund’s brother, who owns the themed motor inn we’re staying at, doesn’t like newcomers who ask too many questions. Neither does the police officer who’s looking to become famous himself. When my fiancé leaves me high and dry, I jump at the chance to relocate to the tropical island of Half Moon Cross. I haven't talked to my Aunt Astrid in years and I've never run a bird-themed pirate tour company, but my cockatiel, Chicken, and I are desperate for a fresh start. We're ready for sun, surf, and parrots. What we get is murder. I might be in paradise, but I didn’t leave my problems in Boston. My Aunt is a virtual stranger and I'm scared she regrets giving me Parrots of The Caribbean. Her scarlet macaw Ruby, star of her tours, refuses to go out with me. But I didn't run escape rooms for years without learning how to solve a problem. I put Chicken in a pint-sized pirate costume and we're off. Our first voyage is almost smooth sailing—then my hawk-eyed cockatiel alerts us to a dead body on the beach! The victim is an ex-employee and my aunt’s been framed. If Astrid takes the blame, it will mean the end of Parrots of the Caribbean and the bird sanctuary that she cares for. And since the police aren't looking beyond her, it's up to me to find the real killer. Good thing I have some unexpected help from my new coworker and fast friend, Meg. She introduces me to Carlos, the handsome ex-detective who now makes the best fruity drinks on the island. We have too many suspects and not enough time. But when Chicken finds a key piece of evidence, my cockatiel might just crack the case. Feathers will fly and justice will be served in this tropical cozy caper!

Book excerpt: This book is an in-depth analysis of three of the most crucial years in twentieth-century Italian history, the years 1943-46. After more than two decades of a Fascist regime and a disastrous war experience during which Italy changed sides, these years saw the laying of the political and cultural foundations for what has since become known as Italy's First Republic. Drawing on texts from the literature, film, journalism, and political debate of the period, Antifascisms offers a thorough survey of the personalities and positions that informed the decisions taken in this crucial phase of modern Italian history.

Book Synopsis Lake of Sins: Escape by : L. S. O'Dea
Download or read book Lake of Sins: Escape written by L. S. O'Dea and published by Linda O'Dea. This book was released on 2014-12-26 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enjoy this FREE dystopian, genetic engineering series by bestselling science-fantasy author L. S. O'Dea. Every year after harvest the weakest are removed from the encampment. None of them are ever seen or heard from again. Trinity’s only hope of escape lies in the forest. She’s not afraid of the creatures that live there. There’s nothing bigger than foxes in those woods, except this time something is different. This time she’s hunted from land and sea by predators that should only exist in legends. Surrounded by three enemies. Surrender is her only option, but which one should she choose? A captivating dystopian read filled with human-animal hybrids and creatures you’ve never even imagined. Fans of Daniel Young, Michael Anderle, and Anna Hackett will love this free science-fantasy, genetic engineering story. Author Interview Q. – Why should someone read the Lake of Sins series? If you're looking for your typical gentic engineering, post-apocalyptic, survival thriller then you should look somewhere else. This story has been described as a one-of-a-kind world created in a unique dystopian society. The characters in the series are human-animal hybrids—genetic mutations or evil experiments, is yet to be revealed. It's an entire new species of characters who don't fit in the typical genre categories of vampire, werewolf, witch, fairies or even angels and demons. The world of the Lake of Sins is segregated by class with the humans ruling supreme. In book one, Escape, Trinity unwittingly sets off a collision between the classes when she flees into the forest to find and free her friend only to discover the horrible fate of her kind. The books are fast paced with adventure and mutated creatures around every corner. There are legends that are truth and societal truths that are well guarded lies. All-in-all, it's a unique and exciting read and you should give it a try. I think you'll love it. The Chimera Chronicles series also takes place in the world of the Lake of Sins. These stories are prequels, explaining how some of the characters, who you meet in the Lake of Sins series, became monsters. Q. – Who should read the Lake of Sins series? Although there's a strong, female lead in Lake of Sins, the audience for both series is broad. I have fans (male and female) aged ten through eighty. Anyone who likes gory thrillers that are dark, a little disturbing and packed with action will enjoy these books. However, a word of caution is in order. These books are not for the squeamish. Some scenes are bloody and violent almost falling into the horror genre, but the interactions between the characters are funny, poignant and loving (and a love triangle develops as the stories progress). Still, I wouldn't recommend these books to anyone under thirteen without the parents reading the books first.
Book Synopsis Stealing Rembrandts by : Anthony M. Amore
Download or read book Stealing Rembrandts written by Anthony M. Amore and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2011-07-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthony M. Amore and Tom Mashberg's Stealing Rembrandts is a spellbinding journey into the high-stakes world of art theft Today, art theft is one of the most profitable criminal enterprises in the world, exceeding $6 billion in losses to galleries and art collectors annually. And the masterpieces of Rembrandt van Rijn are some of the most frequently targeted. In Stealing Rembrandts, art security expert Anthony M. Amore and award-winning investigative reporter Tom Mashberg reveal the actors behind the major Rembrandt heists in the last century. Through thefts around the world - from Stockholm to Boston, Worcester to Ohio - the authors track daring entries and escapes from the world's most renowned museums. There are robbers who coolly walk off with multimillion dollar paintings; self-styled art experts who fall in love with the Dutch master and desire to own his art at all costs; and international criminal masterminds who don't hesitate to resort to violence. They also show how museums are thwarted in their ability to pursue the thieves - even going so far as to conduct investigations on their own, far away from the maddening crowd of police intervention, sparing no expense to save the priceless masterpieces. Stealing Rembrandts is an exhilarating, one-of-a-kind look at the black market of art theft, and how it compromises some of the greatest treasures the world has ever known.
