Download or read book Whitney Museum of American Art at Altria written by Whitney Museum of American Art and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For twenty-five years the Whitney Museum of American Art at Altria has occupied an entirely unique niche within the New York art world. Operating under the aegis of the Whitney Museum of American Art and funded by Altria Group, Inc., Whitney at Altria has enjoyed great programmatic freedom and presented exciting new work, always free to the public. Its commissioned exhibitions, annual performance series (dance, theater, and music), and innovative public programming have supported cutting-edge projects by numerous contemporary artists and performers, no small number of whom have gone on to become major art world figures. This anthology celebrates the fascinating history of the Whitney at Altria and for the first time plumbs the archives--photographs of exhibitions and performances and museum brochures published for each event--to provide a record of this incomparable museum and its contributions to contemporary art. Distributed for the Whitney Museum of American Art

This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary collection of case studies rethinks corporate patronage in the United States and reveals the central role corporations have played in shaping American culture. This volume offers new methodologies and models for the subject of corporate patronage, and contains an extensive bibliography on corporate patronage, art collections and exhibitions, sponsorship, and philanthropy in the United States. The case studies herein go beyond the usual focus on corporate sponsorship and collecting to explore the complex organizational networks and motivations behind corporate commissions. Featuring chapters on Margaret Bourke-White, Julie Mehretu, Maxfield Parrish, Pablo Picasso, Diego Rivera, Eugene Savage, Millard Sheets, and Kehinde Wiley, as well as studies on Andrew Carnegie, Andrew Mellon, John D. Rockefeller Sr. and Jr., and Dorothy Shaver, and companies such as Herman Miller and Lord and Taylor, this volume looks at a wide array of works, ranging from sculpture, photography, mosaics, and murals to advertisements, department store displays, sportswear, medical schools, and public libraries.
Book Synopsis The Making of Indigenous Australian Contemporary Art by : Marie Geissler
Download or read book The Making of Indigenous Australian Contemporary Art written by Marie Geissler and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-06 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication brings together existing research as well as new data to show how Arnhem Land bark painting was critical in the making of Indigenous Australian contemporary art and the self-determination agendas of Indigenous Australians. It identifies how, when and what the shifts in the reception of the art were, especially as they occurred within institutional exhibition displays. Despite key studies already being published on the reception of Aboriginal art in this area, the overall process is not well known or always considered, while the focus has tended to be placed on Western Desert acrylic paintings. This text, however represents a refocus, and addresses this more fully by integrating Arnhem Land bark painting into the contemporary history of Aboriginal art. The trajectory moves from its understanding as a form of ethnographic art, to seeing it as conceptual art and appreciating it for its cultural agency and contemporaneity.
