Book excerpt: When the Umayyads, the first Islamic dynasty, rose to power shortly after the death of the Prophet Muhammad (d. 632), the polity of which they assumed control had only recently expanded out of Arabia into the Roman eastern Mediterranean, Iraq and Iran. A century later, by the time of their downfall in 750, the last Umayyad caliphs governed the largest empire that the world had seen, stretching from Spain in the West to the Indus valley and Central Asia in the East. By then, their dynasty and the ruling circles around it had articulated with increasing clarity the public face of the new monotheistic religion of Islam, created major masterpieces of world art and architecture, some of which still stand today, and built a state apparatus that was crucial to ensuring the continuity of the Islamic polity. Book excerpt: English summary: In the context of this book, the term 'foreign' can be interpreted in such a way as to consider anything outside one's perceived norm as unfamiliar and therefore strange or even odd. This attitude, however, can change as a result of greater familiarity with foreign culture and art so that the foreign trait might be considered as something exceptional to be admired and therefore desirable or even treasured. The foreign phenomenon in 'Oriental' art can be understood in two ways: either as the approach of Europe towards the Muslim Middle East (including North Africa and Central Asia) and its art or, conversely, as the attitude and reaction of the Middle East towards the Western world and its art. This phenomenon pertains also to the approach of the Middle East to the Far East and its art, as well as the attitude of the Far East to Middle Eastern art. In the course of historical developments the attitude and approach of the parties change significantly and bring about different results. All interest in the 'other' and 'outsider' artworks has for a long time taken place in spite of repeated hostilities, but trade for luxury goods and new ideas, as well as interest in profitable merchandising never entirely stopped the flow of exchanges. These exchanges were numerous and could also mean that the commercial drive and curiosity of mankind wins out over the hesitation to adopt features of foreign art and culture. The mystery and lure of the exotic and the magical attraction of the "foreign" element can take many forms. In the chapters of this book it will be shown that this fascination with foreign artistic features, themes, and goods can be deemed desirable and coveted, can be expressed in many different ways, and usher in new artistic concepts. German description: In den Beitragen dieser Publikation wird versucht, das Wort "fremd" in seiner Bedeutung fur die orientalische Kunstgeschichte zu analysieren. Wie Fremdheit wahrgenommen, beurteilt und bildlich festgehalten wird, stellt eines der grundlegenden Themen der visuellen Disziplinen dar. Dieses Phanomen unter moglichst verschiedenen Aspekten - von Europa aus wie auch aus der Sicht der orientalischen und ostasiatischen Kulturen - zu untersuchen, ist das Anliegen der hier zusammengestellten Beitrage. Sie befassen sich innerhalb der kunsthistorischen Artikel mit Ausserungen uber fremde Kunst sowie mit der Darstellung fremder Menschen und ihrer Erscheinung, der Einstellung fremden Kulturleistungen gegenuber und dem Umgang mit dem Fremden in der eigenen Gesellschaft. In dieser Publikation ist das Wort "das Fremde" durch den Begriff "the other" ersetzt. Es werden verschiedene Ansatze unter dem Schlagwort "the other" vorgelegt, um zu einer Diskussion und einer weiterfuhrenden Definition des Wortes beizutragen. Gerade zu Beginn des 21. Based on textual and archaeological evidence, it offers a detailed analysis of the estates' architecture and gardens within a synthetic socio-historical framework. Author Glaire Anderson focuses closely on the C?ban case study, synthesizing the archaeological evidence for the villas that has been unearthed from the 1980s up to 2009, with extant works of Andalusi art and architecture, as well as evidence from the Arabic texts. While the author brings her expertise on medieval Islamic architecture, art, and urbanism to the topic, the book contributes to wider art historical discourse as well: it is also a synthetic project that incorporates material and insights from experts in other fields (agricultural, economic, and social and political history). In this way, it offers a fuller picture of the topic and its relevance to Andalusi architecture and art, and to broader issues of architecture and social history in the caliphal lands and the Mediterranean.
