Book excerpt: “He had that rarest of all things, common sense.” And in the case of Oscar Wilde he also had a gift for delivering this common sense in sometimes pithy but always memorable statements. One of the world’s most unforgettable authors, Oscar Wilde had a comment for any and every occasion, many of which are quoted here. From art and actors to vice and virtue, this volume organizes 3109 Oscar Wilde quotations by subject matter, effectively providing a new way to enjoy Wilde’s considerable literary legacy. Quotations are taken from Wilde’s works, including The Importance of Being Earnest and The Picture of Dorian Gray, his correspondence, magazine articles and newspaper editorials. Some, which are otherwise not immediately verifiable, are garnered from reliable secondary sources. Sixty-seven chapters deal with topics as varied as death, domesticity, friends and enemies, with the source of each quote duly noted. The work, a fascinating read of Wilde’s acute observations, is indexed.
Book Synopsis Gustav Stickley's Craftsman Farms by : Mark Alan Hewitt
Download or read book Gustav Stickley's Craftsman Farms written by Mark Alan Hewitt and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1911 to 1917 Craftsman Farms—now a major museum—was the home of Gustav Stickley, one of the central figures in the American Arts and Crafts Movement. This book unravels the rich and sometimes contradictory ideas that informed not only Stickley but many of the artists and literary figures of the progressive era in America. The year 1900 was the fulcrum in a long arc of utopian ideals dating back to Thomas Carlyle, John Ruskin, and William Morris in England, a movement which would eventually lead up to the art communes of the Guild of Handicraft, Woodstock, and the MacDowell colony. Craftsman Farms was at the center of a large group of American experiments in "living the artistic life." With this book, Mark Alan Hewitt provides a foil for a critical examination of the theories that guided many architects, artists, and craft artisans at the turn of the last century. Illustrated with specially commissioned photographs as well as many archival photographs from the Winterthur Museum and Library, this book provides both a visual and historical record of Stickley's life and work during his most fertile creative period.

Book excerpt: First published in 1998. Design reform in the fields of architecture and the decorative or applied arts became objectified through writings published during the period of 1885 to 1910. This investigation includes, but is not limited to, Art Nouveau in France and Belgium, and the arts and crafts movement in England and the United States. Even though the similar processes of creativity and shared goals of Art Nouveau and the arts and crafts movement have long been recognized, attempts to explore their origins and their points of interrelation with the broader scope of art history have been largely unsuccessful—until now.

Book excerpt: If you’re looking to learn a little more about Wilde the man, as apposed to Wilde the persona, ‘Miscellanies’ is the place to start. A collection of writings, lectures, letters, and reviews, it shows the more vulnerable side of the writer. His thoughts on everything from art and fashion to Americans and poetry are peppered with his trademark, acidic wit, yet reveal a more thoughtful aspect than was shown to the public. A fascinating read for those who want to get to know Wilde that much better. Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900) was an Irish novelist, poet, playwright, and wit. He was an advocate of the Aesthetic movement, which extolled the virtues of art for the sake of art. During his career, Wilde wrote nine plays, including ‘The Importance of Being Earnest,’ ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan,’ and ‘A Woman of No Importance,’ many of which are still performed today. His only novel, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ was adapted for the silver screen, in the film, ‘Dorian Gray,’ starring Ben Barnes and Colin Firth. In addition, Wilde wrote 43 poems, and seven essays. His life was the subject of a film, starring Stephen Fry.

Book Synopsis Resist Everything Except Temptation by : Kristian Williams
Download or read book Resist Everything Except Temptation written by Kristian Williams and published by AK Press. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oscar Wilde is remembered as a wit and a dandy, as a gay martyr, and as a brilliant writer, but his philosophical depth and political radicalism are often forgotten. Resist Everything Except Temptation locates Wilde in the tradition of left-wing anarchism, and argues that only when we take his politics seriously can we begin to understand the man, his life, and his work. Drawing from literary, historical, and biographical evidence, including archival research, the book outlines the philosophical influences and political implications of Wilde's ideas on art, sex, morality, violence, and above all, individualism. Williams raises questions about the relationships between culture and politics, between utopian aspirations and practical programs, and between individualism, group identity, and class struggle. The resulting volume represents, not merely a historical curiosity, but a contribution to current debates within political theory and a salvo in the broader culture wars.
