Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Christian Art in Ireland, Vol. 1 The subject of the following chapters is what has been often mis-named Celtic, anglo-saxon, or Runic Art, whereas the style is Irish. The term Celtic belongs to the arts of bronze and gold and enamel practised in Britain before the Roman occupa tion, and in Ireland before the introduction of Christianity in the fifth century. It also embraces the great stone forts that line the western coasts of the country, such as Dun Aengus and Dun Conor, as well as the chambered tombs of New Grange. The late Celtic style in Great Britain, the bronzes of which are marked by distinct characteristics in decoration, prevailed from about two hundred years before the birth of Christ to the time of the Roman occupation. It lingered to a much later date in Ireland. Early Celtic goes back much farther into a pre historic region in which we cannot trace similar peculiarities of decorative design. The early Christian Art of Ireland may well be termed Scotic as well as Irish, just as the first missionaries from Ireland to the Continent were termed Scots, Ireland having borne the name of Scotia for many centuries before it was trans ferred to North Britain; and foreign chroniclers of the ninth century speak of Hibernia, island of the Scots, when referring to events in Ireland regarding which corresponding entries are found in the annals of that countryfi. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art and Ireland If there are doubts, and differences of opinion, and justifiable repudiations of those reproaches made by the enemies of Catholicity in Ireland, who say that the means of the people are squandered on the building of churches in a quantity altogether beyond its needs, there can, among those who are best qualified to know, be no doubt or difference of opinion, or repudiation whatever of the fact, that, as far as artistic excellence is concerned, the money laid out on those churches has, in the great majority of cases, been lamentably squandered. It is not pleasant to think of this; and the feeling of dissatisfaction is scarcely lessened by the further fact that our so-called church art is not in a very much worse state than the modern church art of any other country. The reason for this complete decay of art in the churches, where once it found its chief inspiration and support, may be ascribed in the first place to the secular spirit of the Renaissance, which drew away the artist gradually, to seek his inspiration in worldly pomp, and the palaces of princes, so that now for many years church art became tainted with secularism, until at last the greatest masters almost ceased to occupy themselves with religious subjects at all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Exhibition of Art-Industry in Dublin, 1853 If our summary of Irish Art-productions must be thus limited - for excepting in some objects of minor importance, Irish manufactures cannot as yet enter into competition with those of other countries in the great marts of the world - those who have observed progress in Ireland during the last twenty years, will be amazed that so much, and not that so little, has been done, and will be encouraged rather than depressed, while comparing the Irish contributions to the Exhibition, with those of the sister-country. Those who desire the welfare of Ireland, and believe that its increased prosperity necessarily augments the prosperity of England, will therefore, take heart, while passing through this structure, and have faith as well as hope in the future of a country, whose energies are about to be aroused, - whose capabilities are on the eve of development; in short, whose dark days are over. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fine Arts and Civilization of Ancient Ireland: Illustrated With Chromo and Other Lithographs, and Several WoodcutsThat a style should thus have arisen in Ancient Ireland, have attained a perfection beyond which we cannot imagine it possible to pass, should have been practised for centuries, and been difl'used through Europe for ages, and yet have declined, perished, and be all but totally forgotten, and this, too, within the historic period, constitute a series of events that fill us with astonishment, and serve to show how worthless history may be, and how necessary and valuable are the labours of the archaeologist to enlighten and correct the statements of the historian. Besides presenting select examples from Irish Art, we purpose using these examples as proofs of ancient Irish civilization. The examples, we trust, will interest the mind by their novelty, and improve the taste by their excellence; they will gratify the national heart, because they are national and glorious; they will be esteemed by the student of humanity, because they are the productions of a peculiar and a gifted race, and because they are facts in the history of that race; and we fondly hope that they will show, beyond a possibility of question, that Irish civilization - that debated point among historians - can no longer be a subject of doubt. In connection with Irish civilization, we could hardly neglect to notice the Round Towers, buildings so remarkable in their form, and so national. We will examine the principal theories which have been advanced by the most distinguished antiquarians to explain the origin and the use of these very singular monuments. We hope that our work may be considered a credit to the Irish press. We have copied our examples from the original remains, and executed the lithographs; the woodcuts have been almost all engraved by Mr. G. Hanlon, and he has done his part with that delicacy and skill for which this talented Irish artist is so celebrated.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art in Great Britain and Ireland In short, mediaeval architecture in England has its own character, its own beauties and defects, its own masterpieces and failures, which prove, like other debris from the centuries, that the people of our islands did not greatly differ from those 'of the Continent, so far as their innate aesthetic gifts and aspirations were concerned. The country swarmed with builders, who 'knew the style they worked in as they knew the language they talked. Now and then hints reached them from without. Now and then a strolling craftsman would wander in among them from some country of the sun, while their own employers, bishops and nobles, would stimulate their ambitions by accounts of what was being done abroad. But their dialect was their own, and in rearing the sacred and secular monu ments with which they covered the whole face of the country, they followed those racial instincts which have marked the Briton from their day to ours. He was not far wrong, for it is perfectly true that for close upon a century the Nationalist party has dominated with local grievances the whole course of Imperial policy. Nevertheless the Irish Question is not, intrinsically, a party question at all, nor indeed should it ever have been allowed to become one. It shall therefore be the primary intention of this volume to analyse the situation down to those constituent elements into which it must eventually resolve itself before its anomalous factors can be discussed; polities proper will be introduced only when they become absolutely essential to a right understanding of the tangle into which they have thrown economic controversies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Glories of Ireland We had at first intended that this should be a book without a preface, and indeed it needs none, for it speaks in no uncertain tones for itself; but on reconsideration we decided that it would be more seemly to give a short explanation of our aim, our motives, and our methods. As a result of innumerable inquiries which have come to us during our experience as educators, we have been forced to the conclusion that the performances of the Irish race in many fields of endeavor are entirely unknown to most people, and that even to the elect they are not nearly so well known as they deserve to be. Hence there came to us the thought of placing on record, in an accessible, comprehensive, and permanent form, an outline of the whole range of Irish achievement during the last two thousand years. In undertaking this task we had a twofold motive. In the first place, we wished to give to people of Irish birth or descent substantial reason for that pride of race which we know is in them, by placing in their hands an authoritative and unassailable array of facts as telling as any nation in the world can show. Our second motive was that henceforward he who seeks to ignore or belittle the part taken by men and women of Irish birth or blood in promoting the spread of religion, civilization, education, culture, and freedom should sin, not in ignorance, but against the light, and that from a thousand quarters at once champions armed with the panoply of knowledge should be able to spring to his confutation. To carry out in a satisfactory manner over a field so immense our lawfully ambitious aim was, as we realized at the outset, not possible to any two men who are primarily engaged, as we are, in other work of an exacting nature. Therefore, to render feasible the execution of our undertaking, we decided to invite the collaboration of many scholars and specialists, each of whom could, out of the fullness of information, speak with authority on some particular phase of the general subject.
