They are only in part interpretations of art and of experience as these are to be observed today; in part, they represent a survival of opinions and as sumptious inherited from the Greeks. According to Greek theory, art is a form of practice, and so incurs the reproach of being concerned with a merely subjec tive, changing and imperfect world. This was true of all arts, of those now classified as fine as well as of the useful crafts practised by the artisan. In contrast with both, science was regarded as a revelation - in fact, the only true revelation - Of reality. It was thought to be through science alone that access is pro vided to the world as it is in itself, not colored or dis torted by human Wants or preferences. Art corre sponded to production, science to contemplation, and the productive was branded as inferior, an activity proper only to mechanics and Slaves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art and Industry in Education The Arts and Crafts Club of Teachers College has been able this year to realize a desire it has felt for some years, in publishing a book that attempts to show the relation of Fine Art to Industrial Art, and to represent the attitude of both departments toward the educational situation. It is felt that there is an evident need and demand for such a publication, that will, in some measure at least, answer the inquiries concerning the place of Art and In dustry in Education; and to the extent that this book meets this need and answers these inquiries, its purpose will have been realized. It should be understood, however, that the book con fines itself to the principles being worked out by the departments, and to the fact that Fine Art and Industrial Art are inseparable. An eff ort was made last year to publish a production somewhat of this nature, but for a number of reasons the undertaking was given up. It has been the good fortune of the Club this year, however, to have among its members one who voluntarily agreed to be responsible for any deficit which might result. For thus making the publication possible the Club wishes to express its very grateful appreciation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art and Industrial Education Since 1870 the rapidity of the development Of art and industrial education in the United States has been so marked and so effective, the rapid increase in the num ber of special schools and museums of the fine arts SO strik ing, as to make exceedingly difficult a satisfactory survey of this subject within the limits of a monograph. The movement for the general introduction of drawing in the public schools, and of definite endeavors to promote art education, with a purpose to develop and improve the art industries of a people, seemed alike sudden in England and in the United States. In England it was apparently the definite result Of the first world's fair - the exhibition of 1851. In the United States it had its origin in Boston, in 1870, where it was a direct outcome of the English movement. The Centennial exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876, where the work in drawing of the Massachusetts normal art school, and of the public schools in Boston, was shown, made possible the rapid and remarkable development throughout the United States of the two kindred elements in education, namely, industrial art drawing and manual training. This addition of these two new studies to the regular courses of the public schools has been, perhaps, the most notable characteristic educational feature of the past two decades. AS the English were long held to be a people hopelessly inartistic and devoid Of art possibilities, their wonderful development since 1851, in so many lines Of artistic manu factures, challenges investigation, especially by a people long similarly accused as being innately inartistic, and for a long perio, d, it must be admitted, apparently deservedly SO accused. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Discovery of the Old Art of Teaching School The editor of these reprints has cheerfully given time and thought to the presenting of two English seventeeth century writers upon education, to American readers. The publisher on his part bears the entire cost of copying from the original editions in the British Museum Library and the risk of the possible small sale of a volume dealing with times distant from our own. A large number of American educators gave such gracious welcome to the editor when recently visiting them and their schools for the purpose of reporting upon what he saw, that he is desirous in every way not of repaying the debt but of showing his grateful remembrance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text Books of Art Education, Vol. 6: Book Vi In presenting to the public the series of Text Books of Art Education; of which this volume is a part, it is desired to state briefly the aims and purposes of the plan upon which the series is based. It is not necessary to review the history of art education in public schools, nor to present argument for the introduction or retention of drawing as an important study. These questions have been exhaustively treated, and need no fresh discussion. The school that does not offer to its' community some kind of systematic art instruction is today an exception. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Science and Art of Education I have for some years dictated my instructions on the science and art of teaching, in the form of notes, suggestions, and hints, to the junior class of this school; but a desire has been expressed by students and others to have the work in a more convenient shape for preservation and use, and to enable the many teachers who do not have the advantages of normal instruction to avail themselves of its helps. In compliance with this desire I have prepared the notes for publication: They do not, however, constitute a methodical or a complete treatise upon pedagogics, but only thoughts and suggestions for prospective teachers and for beginners in school-room work. Every subject has been treated with as much fullness, as well as brevity, as my experience has shown necessary. To subjects in which beginners need most help I have given more space than to others; this accounts for the disproportion in the number of pages devoted to different subjects. The matter will be found in harmony with the best in education and teaching, and presented, it is hoped, with a sufficiency of explanation to make it intelligible to beginners. Repetitions occur here and there, wherever it is believed they will be serviceable to those for whom the book is intended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104 Books of Art Education, Vol. 4 Education along specific lines should conform to the philosophy which is accepted as fundamental in general educational work. The educational princi ples adhered to in these books are, therefore, in accord with the psychological laws Of child development which are endorsed by the leading educators of the present time, and the effort has been made to work out in these books a series Of lessons that shall be not only educationally sound and artistically correct, but at the same time adapted in the different stages to the child's ability to compre hend and his power to express. With this end in view, the lessons in the d104 Books Of Art Education have been divided into three groups which may be known as the Observational or Objective Group, in which the study of things is the aim; the Subjective Group, in which the study Of principles or laws Of beauty is the aim; and the Creative Group, in which the application Of accumulated knowledge and ability is the aim. In furthering the work Of the first group, the topics so familiar to the art teacher Of our modern schools are treated - landscape, plants, life, and still life. In the second group are presented the principles Of perspective, Of industrial drawing, Of color harmony, and most important Of all, the principles Of pure design. In the third group are placed creative-exercises in composition, in decorative design, and in many forms Of manual training. While the same division Of work is kept throughout the course, the manner Of presentation differs greatly in the different years. In the primary grades, the work is largely Objective in its character. Children are taught to see and to do. In the intermediate grades, the children are introduced to the principles of arrange ment, Balance, Rhythm, and Harmony, which have been adopted as the working basis Of this series of books, and in the light Of which the subjective and creativework of the upper grades is planned. AS the work progresses through the differ ent years, the subjective and creative sides are more and more emphasized, and the study of Objects is felt to be merely a means necessary to an end.
