Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mughals Brought Miniature Painting, An Offshoot Of Manuscript Painting, To India In The 14Th-15Th Centuries. It Took Deep Root In What Is Known Today As Rajasthani Painting. Its Implantation In Rajasthan Is Mainly Due To The Close Political And Social Contacts Between The Mughal Rulers Of North India And Feudal Rajput Princelings Who Flourished In Northwestern India Between The 15Th And 18Th Centuries. Many Rajput Rulers And Their Courtiers Were Highly Cultivated, And Their Courts Were Centers Where The Arts And Artists Received Unstinted Encouragement From Their Royal Patrons. This Was Particularly So Of Painting, And What Began As An Offshoot Of Mughal Painting Because In The Years Between The Inception Of Mughal Rule And The British Occupation Of India From The 18Th Century, There Was A Rich Flowering Of Many Schools And Styles Of Miniature Painting Which Have Found Avid Admirers Among Connoisseurs Of Art The World Over. Unfortunately, Although Rajasthani Paintings Are Treasured Art Collectors Items Much Sought After By Discerning Lovers Of Art Because Of Their Intrinsic Merit, Little Effort Has Been Expended To Delve Deep Into The Various Modes Of This Painting And Present An Overall Picture Of The Numerous Schools, Styles And Substyles Which Are The Priceless Heritage Today Not Only Of Rajasthan, Their Place Of Birth, But Also Of India As A Whole. Art Experts, Mainly Foreign Savants, Have Written Knowledgeable Accounts About Various Aspects Of Rajasthani Painting, But Nobody, It Is Worth Recording, Has Undertaken To Produce A Comprehensive Study In Depth Of This Vast Cultural Field. This Is Absolutely Essential As No Study Of Indian Civilization Is Complete Without It. The Present Study Does Not Claim To Fulfil This Requirement. That Would Need Much More Intensive, Detailed And Patient Research. But It Provides A Good Point Of Takeoff For Such A Study. In Splendour Of Rajasthani Painting, Assembled Obviously With Great Care And Deep Love Of The Subject, Dr. Jai Singh Neeraj Has Laid The Ground Work For Such A Project. He Has Succeeded In Conveying To The Art-Loving Reader The Fact That Rajasthani Art Is A Many-Splendoured Thing That Deserves Much More Attention Than It Has Received So Far.

Book excerpt: From the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries the patronage of the Rajput rulers of Rajasthan gave rise to a rich profusion of distinctive painting styles, devoted both to the illustration of poetical and religious themes and to royal portraiture and the depiction of court life. The contributors to this book explore various topics of recent research which throw light on the major (and some minor) Rajastahani schools of painting and their social, historical, and religious background. The articles are based on material from a multitute of public and private collections in India and throughout the world, and wall-paintings in situ. Besides chapters on less familiar aspects of local painting styles, essays on individual illustrated manuscripts, and on artists, their families, and patrons are included.

Book excerpt: "This is a study centered on two artists within one family, but it has also explored a network of patronage among the successive rulers of one small territory subordinate to a major ruling house. It has led us to explore new, previously unrecognized centers of painting (Karera and Gyangarh, for example) and to realize that most powerful ruling courts did not necessarily provide the most informed, or the most productive, patronage. Paintings made for the Chundawats of Devgarh are for more interesting and innovative than the works made contemporaneously in Udaipur. But it is now clear that , even within one family of patrons, tastes can be quite distinct, as can the stylistic affiliations of the artists that various family members employed. It seems clear that Rajasthani painting will richly reward further attention." -- From the Afterword

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - Anil Relia's impressive collection of Nathdwara paintings and sketches displays the fine quality of artistry engaged in the service of Shrinathji - The painters acted as story tellers by recounting the exploits of Krishna while also documenting important historical events and personages at the Nathdwara temple, Rajasthan - The scholarly insights of distinguished art historians Kalyan Krishna and Kay Talwar have enriched this authoritative and engaging catalog Nathdwara, located in the Aravalli Hills of Rajasthan, is home to Shrinathji, a 15th-century manifestation of the child-god Krishna holding up Mount Govardhan. Since the establishment of the haveli (temple mansion) in 1671, artists have flocked to the sacred town to adorn the walls where Shrinathji dwells with painted cloth hangings as well as to provide painted icons for the pilgrimage trade. At one time there were hundreds of artists in the service of Shrinathji. This catalog explores Anil Relia's comprehensive collection of Nathdwara paintings and sketches, celebrating the wide-ranging talents of various artists. The painters are creators of icons and storytellers of Krishna's exploits. Krishna lives in their everyday lives permeating their thoughts and guiding their brushes. At the same time, they record important events in temple history and portraits of the people who participated in these affairs. The paintings that document festivals adhere to a traditional hieratic style, but the artist displays a freer hand in telling the exploits of Krishna. A prominent artist showcased in this collection is Ghasiram Hardev Sharma, a master draughtsman with a penchant for naturalism. He influenced a whole generation of 20th-century artists and is still held in high esteem.

Book excerpt: About the Book : - The Rathore clan of Rajputs who ruled Marwar (Jodhpur) developed a strikingly individual style of painting that was interpreted in a host of different ways by local artists in the many small fiefdoms of the Rathore nobility. Artists trained at Mughal courts brought sophisticated concepts of portraiture and composition to Jodhpur in the 17th and 18th centuries; these ideas were combined with distinctive local styles and bold colour to form a uniquely lively school of painting. The first to feature a wide range of vibrant Marwar paintings in full colour, this book provides a complete survey of the development of this little-known school of Rajasthani painting. About the Author : - Rosemary Crill is Senior Curator in the Asian Department at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

Book excerpt: This beautifully written and profusely illustrated catalogue of Pahari paintings in the Jagdish and Kamla Mittal Museum of Indian art in Hyderabad is a major contribution to the study of miniature painting in the Punjab Hills. It Presents in detail many exquisite but hitherto unknown examples of the key centres of painting from the mid 17th to the mid 19th century, and provides sensitive analyses of a number of works of crucial art historical importance. Incorporating the latest research into their discussions of the themes and formal aspects of the 128 works reproduced here, the authors pay special attention to the movement of artists from one state to another within the Pahari region, and formulate ground-breaking accounts of the early phases of painting at courts such as Chamba, Mandi, and Kullu. Particularly noteworthy are their strikingly original insights into the family workshop of Pandit Seu and his highly talented sons, Manaku and Nainsukh, whose paintings and legacy into the next two generations are exceptionally well represented in the collection. They devote unprecedented attention processes, and frequently arrive at fresh and convincing distinction among the paintings produced by various members of a given family workshop. The superb quality of the illustrations, the selection of choice details, and the inclusion of revealing comparative material make this book essential to anyone who studies or enjoys Pahari painting.
