Book excerpt: The objective of this dental caries clinical study was to determine the effect of multiple topical stannous fluoride therapy upon the rate of progression of carious lesions in two groups of young adults comparable in age to men entering the U.S. Army. The objectives of the laboratory studies were to examine tin and fluoride dynamics on freshly extracted bovine teeth having incipient carious lesions. Specifically, these studies were to investigate: (1) The amount of tin and fluoride uptake in carious enamel associated with multiple SnF2 therapy in extracted bovine teeth evaluated under conditions approximating those present in the clinical situation; (2) The relative contribution of each component of the multiple SnF2 therapy program with regard to tin and fluoride uptake in carious enamel; (3) The relative value of SnF2 treatment procedures which might increase still further the amount of tin and fluoride uptake in carious enamel; (4) The relative value of more efficient treatment procedures such as the use of a self-applied SnF2 prophylactic paste with regard to tin and fluoride uptake; and (5) The frequency of re-application required to maintain a maximal concentration of tin and fluoride in carious enamel.
