The specific approach is to make use of optimal space-time liklihood ratio processing for the detection of signals which have varying degrees of uncertainty associated with them. An important aspect of this approach is that no attempt is made to use traditional beam-forming techniques. Optimal array detector design is developed by extending to array antenna systems several problems previously worked for single antenna systems. The first class of problems treated are those which involve detection of a signal of known spatial location. Included in this class are the problems of signal known exactly and signal known except for energy and/or phase. A further and more important extension of optimum array detection is the formulation of the problem of detection of signals of unknown spatial location. Here the target location is considered to be an unknown signal parameter. There is no attempt at beam-forming. (Author).

For the known waveform case, an explicit functional form can be derived for the detectability index to characterize the performance loss. Performance results are shown for both the incorrect assumption about the signal location as well as the incorrect assumption about the directional noise location.

Book excerpt: This paper considers the design of a detection system to optimally detect known signal fields-scalar functions of a vector argument--corrupted by an additive noise field. The detection system has as its input N samples (in space) of the signal-plus-noise field; each spatial sample is the output of a point detector. In the system design, optimal processing of the point-detector outputs, as well as the locations of the point detectors, is considered. The optimal detector for a fixed point-detector array configuration forms a weighted sum of the point-detector outputs and then filters this sum. The probability of error is a monotonically decreasing function of the array gain, which is the sum of the elements in the inverse of the spatial covariance function. The primary application of this research is the design of seismometer arrays to detect and identify the P phase of seismic events. However, the results are applicable to many other electromagnetic and acoustical detection problems where the noise is primarily propagated rather than instrument. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book presents the detailed analytical formulation for the RCS of parallel-fed linear dipole array in the presence of mutual coupling. The radar cross section (RCS) of an object represents its electromagnetic (EM) scattering properties for a given incident wave. The analysis of scattered field is critical in military and defence arenas, especially while designing low-observable platforms. It is well-known that the presence of an antenna/array on the target influences its echo area significantly. The primary cause for such scattering of the incident signals is reflection that occurs within the antenna aperture and its feed network. In this book, the RCS estimation is done based on the signal path within the antenna system. The scattered field is expressed in terms of array design parameters including the reflection and transmission coefficients. The computed results show the variation in the RCS pattern with and without mutual coupling. The effect of finite dipole-length, inter-element spacing, scan angle, array configuration, amplitude distribution and terminating load impedance on the RCS pattern is studied. It is shown that the array RCS can be controlled by choosing optimum design parameters, including terminating impedance and geometric configuration. This book explains each step of the RCS estimation and analysis of dipole array with detailed schematics, tables and illustrations. Moreover, it includes parametric analysis of RCS estimation and control. This book provides an insight into the phenomenon of scattering within the phased array system.

Generalized Fourier expansions for one, two, and three dimensions are discussed. Receiving arrays are modeled in terms of how they observe signal fields with the roles of their geometry and the observation noise analyzed. The design of optimum beamformers is formulated and coupled to the representation of the signal field and the receiving array. The structure of optimum beamforms are analyzed and related to beam displacement, null placement, and superdirective methods. Processing performance obtained by exact methods and approximate methods are compared for various signal fields and array geometries. The closeness of the results indicate the usefulness of the representations and array analysis in predicting the performance of optimum systems. Finally, the structure of preformed beams and clustered receiving arrays are analyzed with these methods.
