Download or read book Atlantic Islands written by Anne Hammick and published by Imray, Laurie, Norie and Wilson Ltd. This book was released on 2022-07-18 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atlantic Islands is a long-established cruising guide to the five island groups of the North Atlantic, commonly visited by those sailing the popular Atlantic crossing routes but increasingly enjoyed as cruising destinations in their own right. From the sun-baked lagoons of Bemuda to the verdant slopes of the Azores and Madeira, from the fiery landscapes of the Canaries to the less visited coastlines of the Cape Verdes, this seventh edition has thoroughly updated text and plans and is illustrated with numerous new photographs. Co-authors of the sixth edition, Anne Hammick and Hilary Keatinge, have been joined by Linda Lane Thornton who lives on and cruises in the Azores. Together they enrich the coverage overall with their first-hand knowledge of each of the island groups. An essential companion for those planning a cruise any of the North Atlantic island groups, even more so for anyone planning an Atlantic crossing or circuit. The seventh edition of Atlantic Islands builds on solid foundations…The co-authors know their group of islands inside-out and it shows in the depth of content and recommendations within the guide…..If you are planning on crossing the Atlantic and don’t yet have a copy, then this new seventh edition should be on your pre-departure shopping list. “It is difficult to fault this pilot. It is clearly and consistently laid out- the navigational directions are concise and accurate, the Introductions and History of each archipelago and each island are interesting and whet one’s appetite for exploration. It is an excellent, informative and enjoyable companion for any Atlantic cruising sailor.” Flying Fish Magazine (Ocean Cruising Club)

Book Synopsis The Wealth of History of the Small African Twin-Island State São Tomé and Príncipe by : Gerhard Seibert
Download or read book The Wealth of History of the Small African Twin-Island State São Tomé and Príncipe written by Gerhard Seibert and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twin-island state of São Tomé and Príncipe, located in the Gulf of Guinea, is the second smallest African country, after the Seychelles. The essays of this collection highlight crucial periods and important events in the country’s varied and eventful history, which spans more than 500 years. Portugal colonised the islands twice in significantly different economic and historical contexts: first, in the sixteenth century during its maritime expansion, and secondly in the latter half of the nineteenth century, at the beginning of the colonisation of Africa by European powers. In these two periods, the small islands played a pioneering role in the economic history of sugar and cocoa, respectively. Following independence in 1975, the country’s economic development has fallen far short of expectations and consequently its dependence on foreign aid has persisted. Nevertheless, external observers have considered the archipelago of 225,000 inhabitants to be a model of parliamentary democracy in Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. O Khunn!. .

Book Synopsis Tropical Marine Environments of Brazil by : José Maria Landim Dominguez
Download or read book Tropical Marine Environments of Brazil written by José Maria Landim Dominguez and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-27 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the tropical marine environments of Brazil and a multi-disciplinary assessment of the impact of ongoing climate change in these environments. These changes will affect physical, biological and biogeochemical characteristics of coastal zones and oceans, modifying their ecological structure, their functions and the various services provided to humans and have the potential of causing severe socioeconomic impacts in local (coastal zone), regional (continental shelf and shallow seas) and global (ocean) scales. The Tropical Brazil presents a unique opportunity to evaluate how spatial and temporal heterogeneity influences the response and resilience of marine environments to climate changes. This region comprises the main reef constructions of the Western South Atlantic Ocean, the majority of the Brazilian deltas, one of the longest mangrove areas of the world, a very narrow and shallow continental shelf, extreme variations in sediment and nutrient flows, as well as undeniable importance in transferring heat and mass between hemispheres.

Book Synopsis Island, Ocean and Deep-Sea Biology by : M.B. Jones
Download or read book Island, Ocean and Deep-Sea Biology written by M.B. Jones and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 34th European Marine Biology Symposium was held in Ponta Delgada, The Azores, between 13th and 17th September 1999. It was organised by the University of the Azores in association with the Municipal Museum of Funchal (Madeira), and the Plymouth Environment Research Centre (University of Plymouth, UK). The selected topics, dictated by the position of the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean, were: `Ecology and Evolution on Island Shores', `The Open Ocean', and `The Deep Ocean'. Each topic was introduced by a recognised expert of international reputation and these keynote reviews provide authoritative summaries of the current status of these very important topics in marine biology. The 35 papers which make up this volume bring new ideas and concepts relating to the functioning of marine systems extending from the intertidal, through the pelagic realm down to the deep sea. The book covers many aspects of the biology of marine organisms and will have wide interest to all those interested in the life of the world's oceans.
