Esta publicación es el primer volumen de una serie que cubrirá la mayoría de aspectos estadísticos de las investigaciones arqueológicas: análisis multidimensionales, análisis espacial, morfometría, seriación, etc. Juan A. Barceló es profesor titular en el Departamento de Prehistoria de la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, centro en el que enseña temas de estadística en arqueología desde hace más de quince años. Es también fundador y director del laboratorio de Arqueología Cuantitativa y Aplicaciones Informáticas. Como investigador reconocido se ha especializado en la investigación de técnicas arqueológicas y en la teoría de la disciplina. Ha desarrollado aplicaciones informáticas, especialmente en temas tales como análisis espacial, estadística multidimensional, inteligencia artificial y visualización asistida por ordenador. Como arqueólogo ha participado en excavaciones en España, Portugal, Italia, Siria, Nicaragua y Argentina.

Endowed with extraordinary wealth in metals and strategically positioned between the Atlantic and Mediterranean trading routes at the time of Greek and Phoenician colonial expansion, Tartessos flourished in the eight-seventh centuries BCE. Tartessos became a literate, sophisticated, urban culture in southwestern Iberia (today's Spain and Portugal), enriched by commercial contacts with the Aegean and the Levant since at least the ninth century.
