Book excerpt: In the late 1920s, this high desert area with little water and unproductive soil held no attraction for most people, but the small community of Amargo provided a grocery store, gas station, and of course a saloon for the convenience of tenacious gold and borax prospectors. In 1938, after the large deposit of borax was discovered and mining had begun, a town hall meeting was called and Le Roy Osborne, supervisor of Pacific Coast Borax Company, suggested changing the name from Amargo to Boron. Boron is the fifth element on the periodic table and combines with other nonmetallic minerals to form a family of related minerals called borates; after this was explained to those gathered at the town hall meeting, Boron was unanimously chosen as its new name and the community was forever linked to the borax mining industry.

Book excerpt: The impending crisis posed by water stress and poor sanitation represents one of greatest human challenges for the 21st century, and membrane technology has emerged as a serious contender to confront the crisis. Yet, whilst there are countless texts on wastewater treatment and on membrane technologies, none address the boron problem and separation processes for boron elimination. Boron Separation Processes fills this gap and provides a unique and single source that highlights the growing and competitive importance of these processes. For the first time, the reader is able to see in one reference work the state-of-the-art research in this rapidly growing field. The book focuses on four main areas: - Effect of boron on humans and plants - Separation of boron by ion exchange and adsorption processes - Separation of boron by membrane processes - Simulation and optimization studies for boron separation - Provides in one source a state-of-the-art overview of this compelling area - Reviews the environmental impact of boron before introducing emerging boron separation processes - Includes simulation and optimization studies for boron separation processes - Describes boron separation processes applicable to specific sources, such as seawater, geothermal water and wastewater

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vast range of different functional groups is potentially available from the attachment of three or four heteroatoms to carbon. Some of these are abundantly represented in the literature, others are rare, and many have yet to be described. The aim of this volume is to describe the synthesis of examples of known functional groups and to highlight those that are little known or unknown. All possible combinations of heteroatoms have been surveyed, with the exception of complexes in which carbon atoms are bonded only to transition elements. The material is organised in four parts: tetracoordinated carbon atoms bearing three attached heteroatoms are covered in Part 1, and those bearing four heteroatoms in Part II; the synthesis of tricoordinated carbon atoms with three attached heteroatoms is described in Part III; stabilized radicals and carbocations with three attached heteroatoms are covered briefly in Part IV.

Book excerpt: Graphene Materials: Fundamentals and EmergingApplications brings together innovative methodologies withresearch and development strategies to provide a detailedstate-of-the-art overview of the processing, properties, andtechnology developments of graphene materials and theirwide-ranging applications. The applications areas covered arebiosensing, energy storage, environmental monitoring, andhealth. The book discusses the various methods that have been developedfor the preparation and functionalization of single-layeredgraphene nanosheets. These form the essential building blocks forthe bottom-up architecture of various graphene materials becausethey possess unique physico-chemical properties such as largesurface areas, good conductivity and mechanical strength, highthermal stability and desirable flexibility. The electronicbehavior in graphene, such as dirac fermions obtained due to theinteraction with the ions of the lattice, has led to the discoveryof novel miracles like Klein tunneling in carbon-based solid statesystems and the so-called half-integer quantum Hall effect. Thecombination of these properties makes graphene a highly desirablematerial for applications. In particular, Graphene Materials: Fundamentals and EmergingApplications has chapters covering: • Graphene and related two-dimensional nanomaterials • Surface functionalization of graphene • Functional three-dimensional graphene networks • Covalent graphene-polymer nanocomposites • Magnesium matrix composites reinforced with graphenenanoplatelets • Graphene derivatives for energy storage • Graphene nanocomposite for high performance supercapacitors • Graphene nanocomposite-based bulk hetro-junction solar cells • Graphene bimetallic nanocatalysts foam for energy storage andbiosensing • Graphene nanocomposites-based for electrochemical sensors • Graphene electrodes for health and environmental monitoring

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.
