Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unforgettable memoir of 70 years of contemporary and personal history from the great French filmmaker, journalist and intellectual Claude Lanzmann Born to a Jewish family in Paris, 1925, Lanzmann's first encounter with radicalism was as part of the Resistance during the Nazi occupation. He and his father were soldiers of the underground until the end of the war, smuggling arms and making raids on the German army. After the liberation of France, he studied philosophy at the Sorbonne, making money as a student in surprising ways (by dressing as a priest and collecting donations, and stealing philosophy books from bookshops). It was in Paris however, that he met Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. It was a life-changing meeting. The young man began an affair with the older de Beauvoir that would last for seven years. He became the editor of Sartre's political-literary journal, Les Temps Modernes—a position which he holds to this day—and came to know the most important literary and philosophical figures of postwar France. And all this before he was 30 years old. Written in precise, rich prose of rare beauty, organized—like human recollection itself—in interconnected fragments that eschew conventional chronology, and describing in detail the making of his seminal film Shoah, The Patagonian Hare becomes a work of art, more significant, more ambitious than mere memoir. In it, Lanzmann has created a love song to life balanced by the eye of a true auteur.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his last book, Ronald Dworkin addresses questions that men and women have asked through the ages: What is religion and what is God’s place in it? What is death and what is immortality? Based on the 2011 Einstein Lectures, Religion without God is inspired by remarks Einstein made that if religion consists of awe toward mysteries which “manifest themselves in the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty, and which our dull faculties can comprehend only in the most primitive forms,” then, he, Einstein, was a religious person. Dworkin joins Einstein’s sense of cosmic mystery and beauty to the claim that value is objective, independent of mind, and immanent in the world. He rejects the metaphysics of naturalism—that nothing is real except what can be studied by the natural sciences. Belief in God is one manifestation of this deeper worldview, but not the only one. The conviction that God underwrites value presupposes a prior commitment to the independent reality of that value—a commitment that is available to nonbelievers as well. So theists share a commitment with some atheists that is more fundamental than what divides them. Freedom of religion should flow not from a respect for belief in God but from the right to ethical independence. Dworkin hoped that this short book would contribute to rational conversation and the softening of religious fear and hatred. Religion without God is the work of a humanist who recognized both the possibilities and limitations of humanity.

In fact, they can be far more potent, insidious and misleading. Formerly Mathematics, Physics and Finance for the Legal Profession, this new edition catalogs a vast array of scams, schemes and deceptive courtroom presentations that confront lawyers regularly. Nearly every chapter of this book provides information that all lawyers must possess. We live in a scientific world, a digital world -- one that is ruled by numbers, equations, formulas and statistics. The topics may seem complex, but the explanations are elementary and, at times, entertaining.

Book excerpt: Physics of Solar Energy discusses the fundamental concept of solar energy, solar cells and nano fluids. It also includes the technologies used for the conversion of solar to fuels and performance assessment of nanofluids in the solar energy and thermal properties of carbon black aqueous nano fluids for solar absorption. This book also discusses about ab initio design of nanostructures for solar energy conversion, design of inp nanowires for maximal solar energy harvesting, optical simulations of p3ht/si nanowire array hybrid solar cells, dual effect of tio2 and co3o4 co-semiconductors and nano-sensitizer on dye-sensitized solar cell performance and spectrum splitting for efficient utilization of solar radiation: a novel photovoltaic-thermoelectric power generation system. It also provides the reader with the fundamental insights of solar energy and its conversion to fuels so as to get better understanding of designing nanostructures for the conversion of solar energy and the effect of external applied electric field on the thermodynamic efficiency of the silicon solar cell and calcination temperature on the properties of czts absorber layer.
