Book excerpt: WINNING THE THREE-BLOCK WAR Learn how to prevail in offensive, defensive and stability urban operations! Full-size edition - LARGE 8.5" x 11" FORMAT: clear, detailed text & illustrations. Current, Complete & Unabridged. "Batteries last hours, books last decades: get the print edition!" Fighting in built-up areas presents unique challenges and constraints that can spell disaster for the unwary, drastically reducing the relative advantages of technological superiority, weapons ranges and firepower. Engagements can occur without warning, at extremely close range. Civilians can be difficult or impossible to distinguish from combatants. Entire columns of armored vehicles can be held at bay by a small group of fighters. If that was not sufficiently challenging, most urban societies are only a few meals away from chaos. Their populations may be hostile at the best of times, and their complex man-made physical terrain provides the ideal environment in which to wage guerrilla war. This handbook, created by the United States Army Combined Arms Center, demonstrates how to overcome the pitfalls of the urban landscape and turn them to your advantage - whether you are tasked with offensive operations, defensive preparations, or maintaining stability in the aftermath of conflict or natural disaster. Over fifty percent of the world's population now lives in large conurbations, and urban fighting is inevitable in any conflict. If you are not prepared to survive, command and operate in the multidimensional urban battlefield - you are not prepared at all. Book excerpt: This United States Marine Corps USMC and United States Army manual, Army Techniques Publication ATP 3-90.98 MCTP 12-10C Jungle Operations September 2020, is a dual-designated Army and Marine Corps manual that provides Soldiers/Marines with concepts and techniques associated with conducting operations in a jungle environment. This publication supersedes FM 90-5 and MCTP 12-10C, dated August 1982. The principal audience for ATP 3-90.98/MCTP 12-10C includes Army/Marine Corps commanders, leaders, staffs, and Soldiers/Marines. Trainers and educators throughout the Army/Marine Corps will also use this manual. ATP 3-90.98/MCTP 12-10C denotes Marine Corps-specific text with underlining. ATP 3-90.98/MCTP 12-1OC uses joint terms where applicable. Selected joint, Army, and Marine Corps terms and definitions appear in both the glossary and the text. In doctrinal publications, the normal convention for identifying terms uses italics. Since this is a dual-designated Army and Marine Corps manual, the following protocol is used to distinguish proponency (authority) of information and terms: - Terms in italics and phrasing both underlined-Marine Corps specific terms, phrasing, or concepts. - Terms in italics and definitions in plain text-joint and Army terms with proponent publication in parentheses. ATP 3-90.98/MCTP 12-10C implements standardization agreement (known as STANAG) Allied Tactical Publication-3.2.1B. ATP 3-90.98/MCTP 12-10C uses the current USMC doctrinal numbering schema for reference. Appendix D contains a cross reference table between the current and historical USMC doctrine numbers as many Army multi-service publications do not currently reflect the current USMC doctrine numbering schema. ATP 3-90.98/MCTP 12-10C applies to Active Army, the Army National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States, United States Army Reserve, and Marine Corps, and United States Marine Corps Reserveunless otherwise stated.

Book excerpt: Army Tactics Techniques and Procedures ATTP 3-97.11 (FM 31-70 and FM 31-71) MCRP 12-10A.4 (Formerly MCRP 3-35.1D) Cold Region Operations 2 May 2006 This Army tactics, techniques, and procedures (ATTP)/Marine Corps reference publication (MCRP) is the Army's doctrinal publication for operations in the cold region environment. Marines can utilize this publication as an operational reference with the 3-35 doctrinal series. It provides doctrinal guidance and direction for how United States (U.S.) forces conduct cold region operations. The purpose of ATTP 3-97.11/MCRP 3-35.1D is to arm leaders, Soldiers, and Marines with the necessary knowledge on how to operate in cold region environments. The information contained in this manual applies to all Soldiers and Marines, regardless of rank or job specialty. This manual is designed to work with and complement field manual (FM) 3-97.6, Mountain Operations, and FM 3-97.61, Military Mountaineering. This manual will enable leaders, Soldiers, and Marines to accurately describe cold region environments, their effects on military equipment, impacts these environments have on personnel, and most importantly, how to employ the elements of combat power in cold region environments. This ATTP provides the conceptual framework for conventional forces to conduct cold region operations within the construct of full spectrum operations, across the spectrum of conflict. It addresses cold region operations at operational and tactical levels. Chapter 1 discusses the characteristics of the cold region environment. Chapter 2 discusses the operations process. Chapter 3 identifies and discusses special considerations for operations in a cold region environment. Chapter 4 discusses how to conduct movement and maneuver in a cold region environment. Chapter 5 discusses how to apply sustainment principles unique to cold regions. Chapter 6 discusses how to apply combat power in the cold region environment. The two appendixes detail the special uniform, equipment, and heaters necessary in the cold region environment.

This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Army Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (ATTP) 3-06.11 establishes doctrine for combined arms operations in urban terrain for the brigade combat team (BCT) and battalion/squadron commanders and staffs, company/troop commanders, small-unit leaders, and individual Soldiers. The continued trend worldwide of urban growth and the shift of populations from rural to urban areas continues to affect Army operations. The urban environment, consisting of complex terrain, dense populations, and integrated infrastructures, is the predominant operational environment in which Army forces currently operate. Each urban environment is unique and differs because of the combinations presented by the enemy, the urban area itself, the major operation of which it may be part (or the focus), and always changing societal and geopolitical considerations. Enemy forces will take advantage of this complex environment by intermingling with the populace. ATTP 3-06.11 describes the fundamental principles, tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP) of urban operations (UO) across full spectrum operations, using the UO operational construct (understand, shape, engage, consolidate, and transition) to outline the discussions. ATTP 3-06.11 is based on current BCT structure and lessons learned from ongoing UO. ATTP 3-06.11 primarily addresses offensive and defensive operations in an urban environment. Stability operations are briefly discussed in the context of transition considerations. Stability operations are inherently among the people and generally in urban environments. Field manual (FM) 3-07 is the source manual for stability doctrine and addresses BCT considerations for conducting stability UO. FM 3-07.1 is the primary source for BCT and below considerations for interaction and support to host nation (HN) security forces. This material is not repeated in ATTP 3-06.11. This publication applies to the Active Army, the Army National Guard (ARNG)/Army National Guard of the United States (ARNGUS), and the United States Army Reserve (USAR) unless otherwise stated. The proponent for this publication is the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). The preparing agency is the U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence (MCoE). Urban operations are among the most difficult and challenging missions a BCT can undertake. Most UO are planned and controlled at division or corps level but executed by BCTs. The unified action environment of UO enables and enhances the capabilities of the BCT to plan, prepare, and execute offensive, defensive, and stability operations. Urban operations are Infantry-centric combined arms operations that capitalize on the adaptive and innovative leaders at the squad, platoon, and company level. Combined arms is the synchronized and simultaneous application of the elements of combat power to achieve an effect greater than if each element of combat power was used separately or sequentially. The eight elements of combat power are leadership, information, movement and maneuver, intelligence, fires, sustainment, mission command, and protection. Leadership and information are applied through, and multiply the effects of, the other six elements of combat power. These six-movement and maneuver, intelligence, fires, sustainment, mission command, and protection-are collectively described as the warfighting functions. (See FM 3-0 for details.) The BCT is the Army's largest fixed combined arms organization and the primary close combat force. A key component in UO is the inherent ability of the BCT to tailor its force to meet the requirements of the urban environment. This introduction provides an overview of UO considerations that shape the subsequent discussions of operations at BCT and below.

Book excerpt: This manual, Army Techniques Publication ATP 3-20.15 MCRP 3-10B.1 Tank Platoon July 2019, encompasses techniques for tank platoons of armored brigade combat teams (ABCTs). It replaces ATP 3-20.15, published in December 2012. ATP 3-20.15/MCRP 3-10B.1 provides doctrinal guidance; describes relationships in the platoon; defines organizational roles and functions, capabilities, limitations; and lay outs the responsibilities for platoons during unified land operations. The tank platoon is a unified team; all tanks crews work together to achieve mission success. A single tank can be vulnerable in the face of diverse battlefield hazards, such as enemy forces or unfavorable terrain and situations. These vulnerabilities are significantly reduced when tanks are employed as platoons. The tank platoon requires bold, aggressive, resourceful, and adaptive leaders-leaders of character, competence and commitment-who are willing to accept prudent risks to accomplish the mission. This publication addresses the significant changes in Army doctrinal terminology, constructs and proven tactics, techniques, and procedures.

Book excerpt: Original 2006 Publication.Doctrine provides a military organization with a common philosophy, a language, a purpose, and unity of effort. Rather than establishing a set of hard and fast rules, the objective of doctrine is to foster initiative and creative thinking. To this end, FM 306 discusses major Army operations in an urban environment. This environment, consisting of complex terrain, a concentrated population, and an infrastructure of systems, is an operational environment in which Army forces will operate. In the future, it may be the predominant operational environment. Each urban operation is unique and will differ because of the multitude of combinations presented by the threat, the urban area itself, the major operation of which it may be part (or the focus), and the fluidity of societal and geopolitical considerations. Therefore, there will always exist an innate tension between Army doctrine, the actual context of the urban operation, and future realities. Commanders must strike the proper balance between maintaining the capability to respond to current threats and preparing for future challenges.PURPOSEThis manual provides the analytical tools for evaluating an urban operation to determine if the operation is necessary for overall mission success. It also provides the means to understanding and determining the impacts of the urban environment on military operations and provides information on managing, taking advantage of, and mitigating the effects of those impacts as appropriate. As such, this manual demonstrates how to apply the doctrinal principles in FM 30 to this unique environment.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual establishes the techniques used by individuals, teams, and units of United States (U.S.) Army and U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) Civil Affairs (CA) forces, as well as planners of civil-military operations (CMO) at the strategic, operational, and tactical levels of war. The techniques prescribed in this manual are used when engaging other government agencies (OGAs), indigenous populations and institutions (IPI), intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and other military and nonmilitary entities in support of conventional and special operations missions. This manual elaborates on doctrine contained in Field Manual (FM) 3-57, Civil Affairs Operations. As with all doctrinal manuals, Army Techniques Publication (ATP) 3-57.20/Marine Corp Reference Publication (MCRP) 3-33.1C, Multi-Service Techniques for Civil Affairs Support to Foreign Humanitarian Assistance, is authoritative, but not directive. It serves as a guide and does not preclude CA personnel or units from developing their own standing operating procedures. The techniques presented in this manual should not limit CA forces from using their civilian-acquired skills, training, and experience to meet the challenges they face while conducting Civil Affairs operations (CAO) and providing support to CMO. Appendixes A, B, and C provide the users of this manual with additional information. The principal audience for ATP 3-57.20/MCRP 3-33.1C is Army and USMC CA forces, officers, and noncommissioned officers who support joint and Army forces or serve on the staff that support commanders and operations at all levels of war. It is also an applicable reference to the civilian leadership of the United States (U.S.) interagency. This publication applies to the Active Army, Army National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States, United States Army Reserve, USMC, and Marine Corps Reserve unless otherwise stated.

This book was released on 2016-12-07 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine Corps Techniques Publication MCTP 12-10A (Formerly MCWP 3-35.1) Mountain Warfare Publication 2 May 2016, is a reference for all unit commanders and their staffs (trained or untrained in mountain warfare) and all leaders from the company level through regiment or brigade for use in operations that occur in mountainous terrain, snow, or cold weather. This publication is designed to be used with Marine Corps Reference Publication (MCRP) 3-35.1A, Small Unit Leader's Guide to Mountain Warfare Operations; MCRP 3-35.1B, Mountain Leader's Guide to Winter Operations; MCRP 3-35.1C, Mountain Leader's Guide to Mountain Warfare Operations; and MCRP 3-35.1D, Cold Region Operations. These publications cover a broad range of unit planning considerations that can be used across a range of military operations. This publication references formal individual and collective mountain warfare training programs available within the Department of Defense. Because of the rapid turnover in personnel, operating tempo, multitude of training commitments, and constraint of training resources for these environments, the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center cannot train all Marines. Therefore, this publication-used in conjunction with MCRP 3-35.1A, MCRP 3-35.1B, MCRP 3-35.1C, and MCRP 3-35.1D-identifies the skills that Marines need to be successful in mountainous, snow, or cold weather environments. During combat, these publications provide Marines with the doctrinal references they need to augment the instruction they receive from their unit's qualified mountain leaders. This publication supersedes Fleet Marine Force Manual (FMFM) 7-29, Mountain Operations, dated January 1980; FMFM 7-21, Tactical Fundamentals for Cold Weather Operations, dated September 1992; and FMFM 7-22, Tactical Fundamentals for Aviation in Cold Weather Operations, dated May 1991.
