Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. Army aviation expanded dramatically in both size and breadth of activities after its inception in 1942, but much of its post-World War II history, particularly after the establishment of the Air Force as an independent service by the national Security Act of 1947, has been relatively neglected. Despite a certain amount of jockeying for position by both services, particularly in the early years after their separation, the Army was able to carve out a clear transport and operational combat role for its own air arm. "A History of Army Aviation - 1950-1962" examines the development of the Army's air wing, especially for air support of ground troops, both in terms of organization and in relation to the ongoing friction with the Air Force. After describing the rapid expansion of purely Army air power after 1950 and the accompanying expansion of aviation training, the book delves into the reorganization of aviation activities within a Directorate of Army Aviation. It also provides a valuable account of the successful development of aircraft armament, perhaps the most significant advance of this period. In particular, intensive experimentation at the Army Aviation School led to several practical weapons systems and helped to prove that weapons could be fired from rotary aircraft. This arming of the helicopter was to have a profound effect on both Army organization and combat doctrine, culminating in official approval of the armed helicopter by the Department of the Army in 1960. "A History of Army Aviation - 1950-1962" also explores the development of new aircraft between 1955 and 1962, including the UH-1 medical evacuation, transport, and gunship helicopter and the HC-1 cargo copter. In addition, the book discusses the Berlin Crisis of 1961 as an impetus for immediate and unexpected expansion of army aviation, quickly followed by the beginnings of intervention in Vietnam by the end of 1962.

Book excerpt: Field Manual (FM) 1-100, “Army Aviation Operations,” is Army aviation's capstone manual. It embodies the doctrinal tenets for the employment of aviation and establishes the basis for understanding aviation as an essential element of combat power. Doctrinally describing Army aviation, the manual serves as the foundation that captures the essence of Army aviation and those principles upon which it is employed. It prescribes doctrine above the level of tactics, techniques, and procedures. This field manual provides general guidance concerning the employment of Army aviation on the modern battlefield. It forms the basis for understanding Army aviation's unique contribution to maneuver, combat support, and combat service support missions. It establishes the principles of Army Aviation employment for warfighting and other operations, and applies to all echelons of aviation operations. This manual is intended for use by Aviation commanders, staff officers, and all soldiers within aviation units and theater, corps, division, and brigade commanders and their staffs. It applies to all members of the combined arms team; joint, multinational, and interagency operations; and special operations, or contingency, forces that operate with Army aviation forces.

Book excerpt: Army training circular (TC) 1-400 is intended for all Army brigade aviation element (BAE) personnel, brigade combat team (BCT) commanders, and their staffs. It is intended for use at brigade level but may be adapted for use at ground maneuver battalion level. The focus throughout this TC is how the BAE operates and how it supports the BCT. This TC identifies coordination and information requirements necessary for effectively employing aviation and aviation-related assets in the combined-arms team. TC 1-400 provides as much information as possible without reprinting other doctrinal manuals. Its intent is to provide considerations, lists, and checklists to assist the user in planning and executing aviation operations in support of the BCT. The operational concepts are based on Army doctrine as established in Army field manuals (FMs); thus, it cannot be read in isolation. To successfully use information presented here, the reader must have an understanding of doctrinal concepts contained in listed references within this TC. The TC emphasizes force structure and enhanced operational capability provided by Army aviation transformation which is ongoing and should be complete by 2008. This TC applies to the Active Army, the Army National Guard (ARNG)/Army National Guard of the United States (ARNGUS), the United Sates Army reserve (USAR) , and Army civilian employees of the transformation force across the full range of military operations—peacetime military engagements (PMEs), small scale contingencies (SSCs), and major theater war (MTW). TC 1-400 builds on the collective knowledge and experience gained through recent operations, many exercises, and the deliberate process of informed reasoning. This publication is rooted in time-tested principles and fundamentals, while addressing new technologies and evolving responses to the diverse threats to national security. It will also assist Army branch schools in teaching aviation operations. The procedures described herein are intended as a guide and are not to be considered inflexible. Each situation in combat must be resolved by an intelligent interpretation and application of the doctrine set forth herein.

Book excerpt: This book summarizes current understanding of the scientific, clinical, and technical issues surrounding the use of contact lenses. It discusses the special occupational conditions experienced by military personnel, particularly in extreme environments, that give rise to the question of whether or not to use contact lenses. Experts in optometry, ophthalmology, visual psychophysics, and engineering describe recent developments in design and use; and representatives of the military services provide examples of actual situations in aerospace settings. Considerations in Contact Lens Use Under Adverse Conditions will be of particular interest to those involved in the design of contact lenses and those responsible for occupational safety and health matters in the private sector.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This United States Army publication, Field Manual FM 3-04 Army Aviation April 2020, is the Army's capstone doctrinal publication for conducting aviation operations. Its purpose is to provide the context for employing and integrating Army Aviation into unified land operations. It describes how Army Aviation forces, as part of the combined arms team, shape operational environments (OEs), prevent conflict, conduct large-scale combat operations (LSCO), and consolidate gains against a peer threat. FM 3-04 provides a foundation for subordinate training doctrine, professional military education, leader development, and individual and collective training. Together with ADP 3-0, ADP 3-90, and FM 3-0, this manual provides the foundation for how Army Aviation forces conduct prompt and sustained LSCO. FM 3-04 is applicable to all members of the Army Profession: leaders, Soldiers, and Army civilians. The principle audience for FM 3-04 is commanders, staffs, and leaders at all echelons of the combined arms team. Army headquarters commanders and staffs serving as joint or multinational task force headquarters should also refer to applicable joint or multinational doctrine concerning the range of military operations and joint or multinational forces. Trainers and educators throughout the Army also use this publication.
