Book excerpt: Under this effort a 20mm Semi-Armor Piercing High Explosive (SAPHE) ammunition, designated the PGU-2/B, was designed, developed, fabricated, and evaluated. This design incorporated an all-impact angle base fuze evolved from the feasibility effort. The resulting 20mm SAPHE round is designed to meet or exceed the technical requirements of the M50 series ammunition. It is also designed to be directly interchangeable in the present M39 and M61 gun systems without change or modification to the gun or feed (with the exception of coil spring rates). The initial baseline development included contractor design, development tests, and delivery of over 3,000 cartridges for Government evaluations. Additional effort included fuze design modifications to investigate the feasibility of increasing the minimum arming distance to 6 meters, with 15 meters desired, development tests, and delivery of six cutaway display models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biography of the second most successful sniper of the German Wehrmacht and one of the few private soldiers to be honored with the Knights Cross award. An Austrian conscript who qualified as a Wehrmacht machine gunner, Josef “Sepp” Allerberger was drafted to the southern sector of the Russian Front in July 1942. Wounded at Voroshilovsk, he experimented with a Russian sniper-rifle while convalescing and so impressed his superiors with his proficiency that he was returned to the front as his regiment’s only sniper specialist. This sometimes-harrowing account provides an excellent introduction to the commitment in fieldcraft, discipline and routine required of the sniper, a man apart. There was no place for chivalry on the Russian Front. Away from the film cameras, no prisoner survived long after surrendering. Russian snipers had used the illegal explosive bullet since 1941, and Hitler eventually authorized its issue in 1944. The result was a battlefield of horror. Allerberger was a cold-blooded killer, but few will find a place in their hearts for the soldiers of the Red Army against whom he fought. “It is a great read and covers just about everything you would want to know about Allerberger, the weapons, techniques and employment of German snipers on the Eastern Front in WWII but does it in a manner and narrative that is never boring and is guaranteed to hold your interest.” —Argunners Magazine “A very unique story and experience worth telling of an Eastern Front Sniper.” —Sniper Central

Book excerpt: This celebration of the Second Amendment makes the point that if one's ammunition is made useless, what one has is then the de facto repeal of the Second Amendment. This repeal would have disatrous consequences, as shown by many historical examples given in the text wherein the disarmament of the civilian population was the prelude to mass homocidal or genocidal slaughters. In the text, I detail which types of ammunition are suitable for use against body amor clad intruders, and then I proceed to give in great detail how to increase their usefulness by coating the projectile with a layer of teflon. Coating details are given for both commercially available ammunition, and for home turned solid steel projectiles.

Book excerpt: Black powder, the world's first chemical explosive, was originally developed during the Tang dynasty in China. It was a crude mixture at first, but over time chemists discovered the optimum proportion of sulfur, charcoal, and nitrates, as well as the best way to mix them for a complete and powerful reaction. Author and chemistry buff Simon Quellen Field takes readers on a decades-long journey through the history of things that go boom, from the early days of black powder to today's modern plastic explosives. Not just the who, when, and why, but also the how. How did Chinese alchemists come to create black powder? What accidents led to the discovery of high explosives? How do explosives actually work on a molecular scale? Boom! The Chemistry and History of Explosives reviews the original papers and patents written by the chemists who invented them, to shed light on their development, to explore the consequences of their use for good and ill, and to give the reader a basic understanding of the chemistry that makes them possible.
