Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, as the United States prepared to enter World War I, the military chaplaincy included only mainline Protestants and Catholics. Today it counts Jews, Mormons, Muslims, Christian Scientists, Buddhists, Seventh-day Adventists, Hindus, and evangelicals among its ranks. Enlisting Faith traces the uneven processes through which the military struggled with, encouraged, and regulated religious pluralism over the twentieth century. Moving from the battlefields of Europe to the jungles of Vietnam and between the forests of Civilian Conservation Corps camps and meetings in government offices, Ronit Y. Stahl reveals how the military borrowed from and battled religion. Just as the state relied on religion to sanction war and sanctify death, so too did religious groups seek recognition as American faiths. At times the state used religion to advance imperial goals. But religious citizens pushed back, challenging the state to uphold constitutional promises and moral standards. Despite the constitutional separation of church and state, the federal government authorized and managed religion in the military. The chaplaincy demonstrates how state leaders scrambled to handle the nation’s deep religious, racial, and political complexities. While officials debated which clergy could serve, what insignia they would wear, and what religions appeared on dog tags, chaplains led worship for a range of faiths, navigated questions of conscience, struggled with discrimination, and confronted untimely death. Enlisting Faith is a vivid portrayal of religious encounters, state regulation, and the trials of faith—in God and country—experienced by the millions of Americans who fought in and with the armed forces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Late Walter Hawkins mentions in his song that “There’s a war going on and if you’re gonna win, so you better make sure that you have Jesus deep down within. This battle cannot be won with bullets and guns. For the enemy you cannot see with human faculties. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities, against the rulers of darkness, against spiritual wickedness in high places. It’s a fact that Satan’s on your track and without any warning, he’ll launch his attack. So, you better make sure that you know that wherever you may go that you have the Sword, which is the Word of God deep down in your soul. We need the armour. We need the armour of the Lord” (Walter Hawkins, Love Alive III, 1984). This spiritual war has been waging since the fall of mankind. While living in The Garden of Eden, the serpent or Satan approached Eve and persuaded her to disobey God by eating from the Tree of Knowledge. And the Lord commanded the man, “you are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it, you will certainly die” (Genesis 2:16-17). The Lord provides a tangible manual or guidebook called The Bible, for Born-Again Believers to conduct persuasive spiritual warfare in defeating the enemy. As you read this book, you will learn about spiritual warfare and its origin, the seven parts of the spiritual armour, and how to effectively conduct spiritual warfare. In all these things-----battles, tribulations, challenges, stressors, hardships, attacks) through Christ, you are more than a conqueror because of His love (Romans 8:37). It is our God’s desire for His children to live victoriously in every area of their lives. God bless you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive survey of contemporary Islam provides a philosophical and theological approach to the issues faced by Muslims and the question of global secularisation. Engaging with critics of modern Islam, Shabbir Akhtar sets out an agenda of what his religion is and could be as a political entity. Exploring the views and arguments of philosophical, religious and political thinkers, the author covers a raft of issues faced by Muslims in an increasingly secular society. Chapters are devoted to the Qur’an and Islamic literature; the history of Islam; Sharia law; political Islam; Islamic ethics; and political Islam’s evolving relationship with the West. Recommending changes which enable Muslims to move from their imperial past to a modest role in the power structures of today’s society, Akhtar offers a detailed assessment of the limitations and possibilities of Islam in the modern world. Providing a vision for an empowered yet rational Islam that distances itself from both Islamist factions and Western secularism, this book is an essential read for students and scholars of Islamic studies, religion, philosophy and politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Lee Griffith, being a peacemaker means much more than sporting PEACE T-shirts or voting for left-wing political candidates. Peacemaking is for him a daily practice of community formation, lifestyle decisions, and prayer ordinary living that is faithful to the gospel and happily out of sync with most of the world most of the time and it is a vital part of following Jesus Christ. In these challenging talks, Griffith a veteran anti-war activist who has been arrested many times for his pro-peace demonstrations sets forth a solidly biblical argument for uncompromising nonviolence. Along the way, he describes encounters with dumpster divers and prostitutes, with bag ladies and judges, with people who hear voices and see ghosts and he shares how, through these encounters and more, he has come to know better the subversive God of the gospel.

Book excerpt: This book is based on the authors' experiences as professors of human relations and community activists at the University of Oklahoma, which has the largest degree-granting human relations program in the United States. The specific objectives of this book are to prepare students to work for the provision of equal opportunities for minority groups and women, develop skills pertaining to leadership, communication, group and organizational behaviors by the analysis of behavioral science data, and to function responsibly in situations where conflict and tension call for coordination of interpersonal, intergroup and organization efforts. The programs discussed in this book were designed to provide participants with opportunities to gain self-insight, knowledge of moral and ethical codes of behaviors as well as group dynamics, communication skills, and cognitive tools used to diagnose problems and select the appropriate strategies for change. Unique features include: historical and current human relations problems and strategies; interdisciplinary approaches to the creation and development of human relations programs; an educational approach to the ways of supplementing and complementing relevant issues; emphasis on social justice and equity; and the similarities and differences among and between culturally different people. Several articles and essays that illustrate a few of the issues that concerned professional helpers may be involved in are included. Special attention is given to the consequences of unequal educational, economic, political, and social opportunities for some of our nation's citizens. This book will be a valuable tool for students who are enrolled in their first courses pertaining to professional helpers, teachers, licensed therapists, counselors, business managers, human service practitioners, and community organizers.

Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed and comprehensive look at the primary players, acts, motivations, and methods of the Army of God in their quest to make abortion illegal in the United States. The Army of God may not be widely known, but they are well established as an extremist Christian organization united in their belief that abortion must be stopped at all costs, including the use of violence or force. Who are the primary players in this underground terrorist group, what acts are they responsible for, and what are the motivations behind their quest to make abortion illegal in the United States? Armed for Life: The Army of God and Anti-Abortion Terror in the United States addresses these questions and more, drawing upon never-before-published interviews with members of the Army of God and their own writings to reveal the details of this grossly understudied organization—and to document what its existence and expansion says about our society.

God has given us orders to be armed for battle in spiritual warfare. As we are witnessing in the world today, Satan has mounted a massive attack against Christians and the church. As a result there is a great resurgence of interest in spiritual warfare. Christians of all persuasions must realize they do not have to be pushed around by the devil. Jesus Christ has given us authority - not only to cast out demons, but to bash in the gates of hell. Ephesians 6:11 instructs us to "Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes." In this book, Jamie Buckingham will walk you through each piece of the armor of God and demonstrate how you can have victory in your life over the forces of evil that come to rob you of your God-given inheritance of hope and joy.
