Book excerpt: The Armageddon Stones are like an intricately devised jigsaw puzzle or rather collections of such puzzles, in which after the main component pieces have been put together to make a whole picture, there still remain elements unaccounted for which baffle the most ingenious attempts to fit them into a coherent whole. Armageddon conjures mystical images of prophecy, war, and fear. Almost everyone has heard of Armageddon as it is one of the most recognizable place names in all of history, but it is not a city. There is no metropolis there.Legends describe an unusual, destructive band of comet debris that periodically pummels our planet. The periodic fall of cosmic debris must have been an event so overwhelming in extent, so disastrous in its effect on human civilization. It became preserved in the imagery of myth known as the Apocalypse. The ancient story is hammered into cave walls, painstakingly laid out on papyrus, built into stone temples, and even immortalized in stellar mythology. Stories of massive consuming stones of fire and ice are inexorably intertwined with stories of world-ending wars, ancient prophecies of Apocalypse pointing to the final chapter of modern prophecies made by many. Armageddon Stones. With over forty-years of mythological and scientific research, I have come to the disquieting conclusion that ancient and modern prophecies point like the hands of a giant clock. This conclusion, rooted in physical evidence of past catastrophes, with scientific realities, cosmic theories, and ancient prophecies, shows it is decisive and worldwide in its distribution that the possibility of cometary or asteroid impact cannot be ignored. The Apocalypse stands waiting to be solved as the prophecy truly is; the periodic return of the celestial-serpent-dragon-comet-Armageddon Stones. The Armageddon Stones hint that two stellar locations, Leo and Orion, are the entry points for the Armageddon Stones army to bring a recurring world-destroying rain of ice, fire, and stone. It is not a matter if the Armageddon Stones will strike; it is a matter of when.

Book excerpt: The British Army and her commonwealth Allies went to war in 1914 with little knowledge and experience of constructing permanent, shell proof protective structures. Some masonry fortifications, such as defensive blockhouses in South Africa, had been built but the Royal Engineers of the Army were more versed in simple temporary defences suitable for mobile warfare. Home defences were a limited number of forts around naval ports, and Martello Towers on the east coast. It was considered that the Navy was quite able to defend Britain's coasts. The Germans, on the other hand, as with the other continental countries such as France, Belgium, Italy, Holland, Poland, Austria, etc. had been constantly renewing and updating border forts for several centuries. They had also maintained fortification and siege elements of their armies, who were experienced in designing and constructing strong shelters. Both German and French armies began the war with a degree of expertise in what was to become a static war with little movement. However, by 1918 the British were to surpass both enemy and her allies in the design and construction, with supply and logistics, of such shell proof cover for troops and defensive positions. This book gives the history of development and innovation of concrete bunkers, pill boxes, blockhouses and general concrete constructions during the First World War. Many of these structures some showing obvious signs of war damage - still exist in France and Belgium today. All the existing structures, with photograph (except for some which are impractical, because of dense vegetation,) are shown within. Many entries have contemporary maps showing how they fitted into a defensive system, whilst for others the location can be identified from the text. GPS coordinates are given for each entry, except for a few which are on private land and where privacy has been requested.

Drawing extensively on newspaper reports, personal papers, and local histories, Greg Marquis captures the drama of the times, effectively putting the reader into the thick of the action. In Armageddon's Shadow highlights Maritime support for the beleaguered Confederacy and the grave implications this had on race relations in Canada. Marquis details the involvement of maritimers in running blockades and recounts the experiences of some of the thousands of men from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island who served in America's bloodiest conflict. Book 1 - 'The Longest Night' is set between 8pm and 8am, the critical night battle in Germany between NATO and the New Red Army. The war in Europe has reached critical mass and it is a race between the Red Army and the newly arrived US and Canadian 4 Corps. The winner owns Europe. Just one last push by the New Warsaw Pact will clear away SACEUR's gambit and the last division standing between the Red Army and the Channel Ports. It is the Longest Night for everyone, and the last night for many. Book 2 - 'Crossing the Rubicon' The war in Europe has reached its bloody end and the troops came home to less than gratitude from the politicians. In the Pacific all eyes are on the Spratly Islands as the Allies combat the Chinese 3rd and 6th Armies, but the aftermath in Europe may have left the US and the ANZACs standing alone, or has it? Soldiers have more honour than politicians at the end of the day.

Washington DC, Taipei, NATO's North Cape naval picket, and two carrier combat groups have been destroyed by nuclear weapons. NATO is on the back foot and her potential allies are thinning out, as China shows no hesitation in levelling entire cities. Major Bedonavich and Svetlana Vorsoff are our spies with a conscience and now they are in from the cold, but someone will go to any lengths to exact revenge. Perhaps baiting the Bear in his lair is their only hope of survival? The NATO army in Europe, with the battered but defiant Coldstream Guards and US 82nd are holding the line. Vital supplies are enroute from America but the determination of those in the convoys and escorts is matched by those charged with sinking them. NATO needs to level the playing field, and then tilt it in their favour.

Book excerpt: What are the religious impulses in the 1976 film Rocky, and how can they work to shape one's social identity? Do the films Alien and Aliens signify the reemergence of the earth goddess as a vital cultural power? What female archetypes, borne out of male desire, inform the experience of women in Nine and a Half Weeks? These are among the several compelling questions the authors of this volume consider as they explore the way popular American film relates to religion. Oddly, religion and film?two pervasive elements of American culture?have seldom been studied in connection with each other. In this first systematic exploration, the authors look beyond surface religious themes and imagery in film, discovering a deeper, implicit presence of religion. They employ theological, mythological, and social and political criticism to analyze the influence of religion, in all its rich variety and diversity, on popular film. Perhaps more importantly, they consider how the medium of film has helped influence and shape American religious culture, secular or otherwise.More than a random collection of essays, this volume brings to the study of religion and film a carefully constructed analytic framework that advances our understanding of both. Screening the Sacred provides fresh and welcome insight to film criticism; it also holds far-reaching relevance for the study of religion. Progressive in its approach, instructive in its analyses, this book is written for students, scholars, and other readers interested in religion, popular film, and the impact of each on American culture.

'War in Heaven/Heaven on Earth' theorizes the apocalyptic as it has arisen in a variety of religious traditions, from Native American religion to Islam in Northern Nigeria and new terrorist movements. Millennial theory and history are explored from the perspective of social psychology, sociology and post-modern philosophy. The volume is unique in applying an analysis of millennial themes to a comparative study of religion.

It would summon Sethis and call out his dark legions to destroy all those who had light in their hearts...” Deep beneath the Egyptian sands, an ancient, evil song written in hieroglyphics is discovered in the long lost, buried pyramid of the demonic pharaoh, Aknaseth. It is written that if this song is performed for the world to hear, it will unleash the Apocalypse upon the world of man, and Sethis—known commonly as Satan—will reign and grant immortality to the chosen. Nihilistic multi-billionaire, Festus Baustone III—with the help of the malevolent Egyptologist, Helmut Hartkopff—will do whatever it takes to bring the song to life at any cost...even if his only daughter, Mona, is to be sacrificed. Kirk Vaisto, known as the “God of Guitar” by his millions of fans, soon finds himself caught between the forces of divine good and monumental evil. Oblivious to the powerful darkness lurking in his guitar strings, Kirk agrees to work for Baustone and Hartkopff to turn Aknaseth’s hieroglyphics into music. Kirk begins a musical journey that takes him from an unholy chapter in ancient Egyptian history to the remains of the true Holy Cross, to the concert stage and to the very edge of Hell itself. Kirk Vaisto will give the performance of a lifetime. Immortality, the end of the world, and the salvation of every mortal soul are the stakes in Jeremy Wagner’s, The Armageddon Chord,

Book excerpt: The expectation of an end to time and the yearning for a millennial paradise have been recurring themes in Western religious thought. But when we speak of expectation of the world's end we are mindful of the fact that generation after generation of millenarians have been disappointed. Their endtime hopes and prophecies have not come true. What happens, one might ask, when prophecies fail? Does failure spell the end of the very movements that embrace such expectations? The aim of this anthology is to gather together in one volume the essential research from the fields of sociology and psychology that seeks to answer this intriguing question as first raised by Festinger in his 1956 work, When Prophecy Fails. Cross-cultural and comparative, this collection chronicles forty years of research into failed prophecy and response to the attending cognitive dissonance it produces that is at once timely and informative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1915, the Central Powers launched an offensive on the Eastern Front that they hoped would decide the war. It did not, of course. In June 1916, an Allied army under the command of Aleksei A. Brusilov decimated the Central Powers' gains of 1915. Brusilov's success brought Romania into the war, extinguished the offensive ability of the Habsburg armies, and forced Austria-Hungary into military dependence on and political subservience to Germany. The results were astonishing in military terms, but the political consequences were perhaps even more significant. More than any other action, the Brusilov Offensive brought the Habsburg Empire to the brink of a separate peace, while creating conditions for revolution within the Russian Imperial Army. Timothy C. Dowling tells the story of this important but little-known battle in the military and political history of the Eastern Front.
