It was initially part of, then (merely) the closest neighbor to the District of Columbia. Often, Arlington was a place passed through on the way somewhere else. With better transportation at the beginning of the twentieth century, it became a destination instead. Towns sprang up along the rail lines. An overflow of home-seeking government workers joined the earlier settlers, ultimately developing the suburban community of today. The federal government joined in, placed facilities in the county, and developed the Custis-Lee estate into the national Arlington Cemetery. Historic Photos of Arlington County brings together many different images and perspectives on Arlington, from the non-recognizable rural nineteenth century to quite recognizable images from the 1970s. It captures the manifold aspects of the county in striking, black-and-white photographs. Images of local businesses, county-wide parades, and shaded streets mingle with those of presidential speeches ringing out from the steps of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Book excerpt: For over two centuries, Arlington County has been a steadfast center for government institutions and a vibrant part of the Washington, D.C., community. Many notable figures made their home in the area, like Supreme Court chief justice Warren Burger, General George "Blood 'n' Guts" Patton and a beauty queen who almost married crooner Dean Martin. The drama of Virginia's first school integration unfolded in Arlington beginning in the late 1950s. In the 1960s, two motorcycle gangs clashed in public at a suburban shopping center. Local author, historian and "Our Man in Arlington" Charlie Clark uncovers the vivid, and hidden, history of a capital community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arlington began three centuries ago as the farm section of Alexandria County and emerged in the 1900s as a vibrant suburb of the nation's capital. Global notice came after the creation and expansion of Arlington National Cemetery, the Pentagon and Fort Myer, site of history's first airplane casualty--September 17, 1908. Add in some modern marquee employers--PBS, WETA, Nestlé, the Foreign Service Institute and Amazon--and it's a recipe for accelerating change. Unsurprisingly, residents are increasingly at odds over rising housing costs and demolitions of long-valued homes and businesses. A key to preserving Arlington's character is a deeper knowledge of history. Local journalist and author Charlie Clark provides a compendium of gone-but-not-forgotten institutions, businesses, homes and amusements.

But the identity of the area goes far beyond the influence of the nation's capital. During the War of 1812, the original copy of the Declaration of Independence was hidden from the British in a local area gristmill. Arlington was the only county in Virginia to vote against secession, despite being home to Robert E. Lee. In the 1950s, a young Jim Morrison was raised partly in Arlington. The county even boasts an infamous $1 million bus stop. In this collection of his most funny and fascinating columns, local author, historian, journalist and "Our Man in Arlington" Charlie Clark regales with stories of politics, personalities and everything in between.

Book excerpt: Over the decades of the twentieth century, Arlington experienced a dramatic transformation from a simple, rural community known as Alexandria County into a complex, bustling, urban center, one with a cityscape of high-rise apartments and commercial buildings. Though many know of the area's Civil War-era connections, some of Arlington's most compelling and relevant history has taken place not under a divided union, but across the twentieth-century landscape, a time of unparalleled population growth, ethnic diversification, and economic development. This volume, with over 180 black-and-white photographs, takes readers on a unique visual journey into the Arlington of yesteryear and documents its evolving face over the twentieth century. Through this unique pictorial retrospective, readers will explore some of the county's early villages, such as Glencarlyn, Queen City, Cherrydale, and Barcroft, and will enjoy viewing the transition from the early trolley lines and Washington & Old Dominion Railroad, which first brought growth to the area, to an era known for the development associated with Metro. A visual treasure, Arlington contains scenes of Fairlington, Buckingham, and other developments that housed thousands of new residents beginning in the 1930s; images of places where residents shopped and worked, such as Parkington and Clarendon; and photographs depicting the urban development of Rosslyn, Crystal City, and Ballston.

Book excerpt: Arlington: Twentieth-Century Reflections celebrates the new millennium with a unique reflection of the last one hundred years in this dynamic town. As the century opens, the prizes awarded to local farm products are still making frequent newspaper headlines. But by 1910, Arlington has already reached major crossroads and with astonishing speed, starts down the path towards its ultimate destiny as a residential suburb. Over two hundred evocative images have been selected to show the evolution of Arlington from 1900 through the late 1990s. Through these photographs we witness boom times and wartimes, celebrations and struggles, the vanished past and the past preserved. Most of these photographs have not been seen for decades, and many have been acquired from previously untapped sources.

Book excerpt: "This ambitious, well-written book will be a useful resource for scholars... an excellent overview... a fine, readable introduction that presents its analysis in a straightforward manner free from ideological baggage." --Congress & The Presidency "A refreshingly unorthodox narrative. Campbell [explains] in plain language how government grew. His stance is neither liberal nor conservative, but simply well-informed and reasonable." --Walter Nugent, University of Notre Dame "The canvas is large, but one comes away from the book with an understanding of what has happened, the factors contributing to these developments, and their consequences. Strongly recommended." --Samuel McSeveney, Vanderbilt University "Ballard Campbell has synthesized an amazing range of material: federal, state and even local studies, from history, political science, economics, and assorted other specialized studies. The product is a strikingly comprehensive and readable history of the rise of government in the USA. Even better, it provides a coherent explanation of why the state grew so large." --Richard Jensen, University of Illinois-Chicago "His overview (chapter 2) should be a compulsory assignment for any seminar on modern political culture... " --The Journal of American History "Campbell's book is a marvelous multidisciplinary synthesis that builds on the findings of historians of national, state, and local government, along with those of economists and political scientists, to provide a coherent account of the rise of modern American governing structures." --Journal of Interdisciplinary History "The book should be useful in the classroom, even for freshmen classes in U.S. history and government." --American Historical Review "Readable, and refreshingly unorthodox, Campbell provides a coherent explanation of how and why government has become so large. His book deserves inclusion in any undergraduate bibliography covering the development of American government." --Political Studies Association This engaging survey of the growth of government in America in the last century focuses on the evolution of public policy and its relationship to the constitutional and political structure of government at the federal, state, and local levels.
