As a matter of fact, there is nothing in arithmetic to overtax any average brain. Nor should the study prove tedious. A fair amount of attention, 3. Fair amount of practice, mean easy and rapid mastery. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intermediate Arithmetic His work has been prepared to meet a demand for a book that contains, within brief compass, an elementary course in arithmetic. It is also designed to be an introduction to the more thorough and exhaustive treatment of the science which is given in the author's standard arithmetic. The first part of the book contains exercises arranged in such a manner that they secure an easy and natural development of the ideas of numbers, and they afford sufficient practice to fix the results in memory. Ready knowledge of results can be secured only by frequent repetition and thorough drill, and the lessons that have been prepared are believed to be admirably adapted to produce expertness in computing, without sacrificing interest in the subject through constant practice with abstract numbers. When the more systematic treatment of the science is presented, the pupil is led by natural, progressive, and logical steps to an understanding of the definitions, principles, processes, and rules, before he is required to state them; consequently, all definitions, principles, and rules are but the expressions of what he already knows. It is evident, therefore, that the plan pursued in the work will develop in the student the habit of investigating for himself any subject which may claim his attention, and this is an extremely important part of proper teaching. The fundamental operations upon integers, common fractions, decimals, denominate numbers, and numbers expressed by letters, are followed by their applications to business and to various employments. The introduction of the chapter on literal quantities is somewhat of an innovation, but is in accord with the views of leading teachers, and is based upon sound principles. The elementary parts of algebra should be studied before the advanced parts of arithmetic, because they are more easily com prehended, and because they afford valuable assistance in difficult problems. For the same reasons, the solution of many classes of problems should be taught by algebraic processes, before they are taught by the intricate methods required by analysis. The fact, too, that most pupils must leave school quite early, is a strong reason for introducing into arithmetic the elements of algebra and the conclusions of geometry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primary Arithmetic This little book, the first of our Series of Arithmetics, presup poses no knowledge of numbers whatever. It tries to give a cor rect idea of their value, both absolute and relative, by treating them concretely as well as abstractly from the very outset, pictorial illustrations being freely used for that purpose. We have not sought in its pages to go far, but to go thoroughly. It is therefore confined to the four fundamental operations, a very brief view of fractions, the most important tables Of moneys, weights, and meas ures, and easy exercises under them. These subjects, it is believed, are so treated, as to make the young pupil think for himself, and to lay the right kind Of foundation for a mathematical course. One thing is taught at a time, and great care has been taken to present every thing in its proper place. It will be Observed that through out the book slate exercises go hand in hand with mental Opera tions. In the author's Opinion, they are indispensable, from the first, for inspiring the beginner with that interest in the subject which is essential to success. This book imposes no labor on the teacher, in the way of ex plaining orally, furnishing examples, &c. It is thought to contain in itself all that is needed. The author would only ask those who use it to be sure that every lesson is thoroughly mastered, before proceeding to the next. Each principle presented, each table, should be perfectly understood and memorized before leaving it, even though it be necessary to repeat the lesson again and again. Time saved by allowing a Single lesson to pass unmastered, will be a tenfold loss in the end. The Roman Notation is not explained in this volume; but by means of the numerals used in the lesson-headings the pupil may readily be made to understand it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Primary Arithmetic: Designed as an Introduction to Mental and Written Arithmetic Tms work is designed for those who are acquiring their first ideas of the science of Arithmetic. In its style and material, it is strictly elementary, and thus adapted to the capacities of children beginning the study of numbers. In its arrangement, it is strictly progressive. Commencing with the idea of natural unity, it first aims to represent to the eye the smallest assemblages of those units, to give just conceptions of such numbers as a whole, while teach ing the art of counting, by which we gain a knowledge of those numbers. After explaining the symbols of number, called figures, it takes the pupil, by easy steps, through the tables and exercises of the four fundamental rules. Then follow corresponding explanations and exercises in the same part of Written Arithmetic, in which he is taught to read, write, add, subtract, multiply, and divide with simple numbers, of sufficient magnitude to give him knowledge and skill in small operations. Next come Fractions, only developed enough to give the pupil their elementary ideas, and familiarity with their simple processes. Finally, he is taught and exercised upon the usual statistical tables, to give him information upon the common matters of money, Weight, and measure. It is believed that the scope of this book is sufficient to prepare the pupil for easy and rapid advancement through Mental and Written Arithmetic, which should follow the study of this, in the order in which they are named. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walton and Holmes's Arithmetics First Book This book is the first of a series designed to give a complete course of study in arithmetic for elementary grades beyond the second year in school. Part I is intended for a review of such ground as the pupil should have covered before beginning the use of a text-book. It takes up counting to one hundred and the combinations of numbers to twenty as a number limit. In this part of the book, oral and mental exercises predominate. Part II introduces more advanced written and oral work, and makes steady progress in measurements, denominate numbers, and simple fractions. It is designed to serve the teacher as a guide and the pupil as a text-book for the advance work in numbers to be taken in the third school year. Recent changes in thought and practice as to numbers and number teaching have been met in, what is believed to be a rational manner. Diagrams, illustrations, measurements, etc., have been liberally employed. The idea that notions of num ber and numerical Operations should be acquired from the concrete has been given full recognition. Measuring and com parison of magnitudes and values are constantly employed and are made the basis for abstract number concepts.
